Train tracks. . . ski tracks. . . they're all the same. . . check these out. This is Stillwater Mountain Lodge down by Whitefish. It's a really nice Nordic Center that runs out from their beautiful lodge into the Stillwater State Park.

Get this. . . 2/3 of the kilometers that they groom are open for you to take your doggies!

AND. . . on special nights, they light part of the trail system with luminarias.

HOW AWESOME IS THAT!

My dad loved trains too and one of my great but simple pleasures in life was to take him and my mom, with their grandkids, to play at the Sacramento train museum :-)

Been in there a dozen or more times myself. Bet I could give you a run for your tour guide money, Lisa Mae.

Speechless, writing from the desert...
that's pretty soothing, serene, and beautiful...

It's raining here in Tucson now... and it's lovely. The smell of Creosote is amazing ... the sound of fat rain drops
tumbling down...
Perhaps in some ways, it's why I stay.

Under the same moon... ~xx

Edit: Kath, I think there may be a good chance we are Hobo Sisters, separated at birth.

THAT is beautiful and so peaceful, Kath. Thank you.

The house I'm watching has 360 degree views of Tucson and the surrounding mountains. It was wonderful to watch the soft, airy, clouds of the morning slowly turn pink at sunrise. And as I drove from the West Side to the South Side for work, the smallest pocket of blue presented itself, making my already huge smile even bigger.

Not to mention some kickass songs played on our community station, KXCI, on my drive in... Lovely start to my work day... AND, I think I get off work by early, instead of late ...as I have 4 days this week.

Enjoy Life... and share your joy!

I need to be in Chicago for an 8 am meeting. I need to be in California for a 6 PM birthday party. Connect the dots.

Meeting is one of the largest potential clients my company could court. The entire trip including 3 people, 3 hotel rooms and 2 rental cars, plus meals, - for the opportunity for a 1 hour meeting. 1 hour.

I flew most of the previous day, coming in to the Windy City about 6:30 PM. Made my way to the rental car center forthwith. Already had my destination hotel programmed into the GPS, driving one of them there Kias, like those cars.

Early the next morning, Chicago time, early yesterday morning that is, I showered and dressed early so as to make a phone call. Spent 30 minutes in the wee hours getting caught up. Nice. Good start to my Friday morning.

Anyway we make the meeting, starting perhaps 5 minutes late. Room was reserved from 8 to 9 so we had a hard stop. We went right up to our allotted time, packed up and by 9:10 AM yesterday morning I was officially going home.

My GPS is old and a little slow to grab the satellites so sometimes I have to sit a few in a parking lot till it finds itself. No big.

I also needed to give a business partner a ride to the airport. He sees my difficulty and whips out his android. Jeez its much biggern mine and sports apps for all that. GPS included. So he taps in the airport code and his GPS starts talking in discordance with mine. We're off to the races, each GPS directing us a slightly different way.

9:30 yesterday morning I am ensconced in heavy Chicago traffic, yak yak yakking with this boy from South Alabama (literally ) about smart phones and dumb customers. Yak yak yak several 'get ready to turns' and GODDAMNIT I MISSED MY TURN OFF TO THE AIRPORT!!!!11

5 miles to a complicated turn around, this is the big city, boys, and I am F*#KED F*#KED F*#KED.

No WAY I am going to make this flight. I miss the flight? I miss my daughter's 16th birthday party. One I promised to attend.

I am not the most patient of persons. And when the thumb screws of life start to tighten I can get a little 'guitar stringy' and my nerves go twang and everyone withine 50 feet of me can feel the negative vibes emanating from my soul. Alabama Boy was definitely feeling it and despite my best efforts, at least some of those vibes were aimed at him and his noisy f*#king phone and big mouth. :-) He knew it too, got real quiet as I muttered under my breath about 'never gonna make it now I am f*#ked f*#ked f*#ked f*#ked.'

Finally get turned around, back on track, cost me the 15 minutes I needed to turn in the rental and get to the terminal. So I ask my colleague...

"Hate to ask you this, but could you drop me at my terminal and turn in my car for me, email me the receipt." Dude is all, giving me side looks and sh#t, he's one of those Pausers, he pauses in inordinate amount of time before starting to respond, every time, filling one with the urge to give him his answers. (Of COURSE I'll turn in your car for you man, I LOVE You!)

Reluctantly he agreed. So I finally get to the terminal, hop out in huff puffery, grab my sh#t and go. He's not exactly got a long wait either, so with two fuses burning he tears outta there as I head into Ohara International.

Standing at the ticket counter I realize my cell phone is in the center console of that f*#king car. ARRRGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHh! And I have a call to make, someone waiting on me in fact. F*#K F*#K F*#K F*#K!

Twas also at the ticket counter where I learned I'd lost my reading glasses too. Sh#t sh#t sh#t sh#t sh#t.

Well the line through security was so long I had time to whip out my.... laptop and fire up my hot spot, even got 4g for a bit. Ah the modern life. Despite fuzzy little hard to read blips on the screen I managed to send two emails... one to work mate, please pick up phone, one to waiting call recipient... lost phone but will attempt Skype from the next airport in about 4 hours.

Get to the gate and my section is boarding, no sooner than I walked up I was on the plane. Phew. On the plane with no phone no glasses and commitments to keep. Like I was in jail, man!

No way I could relax on that flight. No in-flight internet on Neanderthal Airlines, hell the flight attendants didn't even shave their armpits! Men!

Anyway, 4 hours of enforced solitude really did wonders for my collective wah, so I downed a coupla cocktails for my troubles. At my connection I had exactly 20 minutes to pull off the call and I needed to be plugged in to do it. Do you know how hard it is to find an unoccupied AC outlet in an airport these days? I do.

Well I found one, behind this massive concrete pillar. Hah! Cept I could only get spotty 3 g and not even enough of a connection to launch Skype or I.M from yahoo or anything. Just sporadic letters coming through.... aaaarrrrrggggghhhh. Once you go high speed omg you canNOT go back.

Call did not go through, despite 3 different Voip vehicles, I could not get enough speed to spin up the lawn mower, as it were. They started boarding my plane. Lovely.

So I get on the plane with my laptop still open, working it baby. People are looking at me because I am one of 'those businessmen' now, cept I'm not. I do have some semblance of shittness, I don't hold the line, I get my overhead taken care of pronto and I'm in my seat tap tap tapping trying to get some sh#t to happen. No. Sprint f*#ks me again.

We take off, at least I'm on final leg home, about 1 PM here time. At least on this plane there is internet service but true to form it took me 25 f*#king minutes to get their sign up service to f*#king acknowledge me, my password, my account info and to process the transaction to give me 30 precious minutes of email time.

So finally, hours after losing my phone, sitting in a prison chair in the sky, I am able to reconnect to the world. Never mind I'm 1500 miles from where I had breakfast.

Reached one climbing partner, check! OK, Sunday's taken care of. Reached the party I needed to talk to that morning but once again frustration reigns as its too late and one or two sentences is all I get. Arrrgggghhhhh! At least we connected though, a relief.

I get an email from a Taco friend that warms my weary and chilled heart. For a few minutes I am listening to some really cool music and nice words. Oh I forgot the middle seat of my economy class row was occupied by a 300 pounder who couldn't lower the armrest. So I had to do all this scrunched up.

Well the 300 pounder was a nice guy actually and showed me all the cool features on his Android Korean made smart phone, slick! Maybe that's my new phone quien sabe? Laptop battery dies 5 minutes later but at least I got some sh#t done. My boss was unsympathetic in her email reply - 'too bad you lost your phone. Oh well, time to join the 21st century anyway.' She detested my blackberry. She's younger than me. Better looking too. And way smarter.

So I get off the plane and make my way to econo parking where the monster van awaits. Fires right up, I change in the back and WHAM!

I am in 4 PM Sacramento Friday afternoon rush hour, after the mind f*#k of Chicago a few hours back. Welcome to my world.

The stop and go prompts a stop at my herbal pharmacy given its right on the way so at least I was able to score some relaxing flower buds to put in my brazier when I finally got home.

Which I did. Rolled in around 5 PM, pre-party prep well underway. Family is coming up from Lodi and that family drinks beer. So off to the store I go. Since I'd lost my reading glasses I thought I'd go to store X, that sells them, beer, photo processing, rubbing alcohol and travel sized toothpaste... all of which I needed for various purposes.

So this is how I found myself standing in one of the locations of the very company upon whom I'd called, earlier that day, in Chicago, buying some sh#t listening to elevator music, feeling way Blues Brothers, on a mission from god.

Know what?

Family arrived on time. I was there. There was cold beer in the fridge and a giant birthday cake on the counter. Pulled pork sliders so good a bag of 40 buns bloody well disappeared in like 30 minutes. Carnitage! Mmmm tasty. Then cake, and lots and lots of laughter, the teenage girl kind, some of the best laughter ever heard on the planet really. La famila, :-)

That's a pick. I definitely saw a pick.

Some dirty dancing went down,

more laughter, I got to make Joann one of my girlyman cocktails (with vodka, grapefruit pieces, cranberry and a little OJ, har har). I may have enjoyed more than one, who knows. Occasionally escaped to the garage for some of that brazier work and the night rolled on. Even broke out the guitar but never actually played it, they were too hip hop for my ole country boy bullsh#t.

This strange family of mine has a strange tradition of cake face birthdays...

Happy birthday Kaity!

Carlie let me take her picture again. JUST ONE!

Hugs and kisses, see you soons, christmas is just 2 weeks aways... see them to the curb off they go.

Back inside I reflect on the day... for about 5 minutes. Check email, a couple 'home safe' txts, and like... a day in my modern life comes to a close.

So I quaff a sleeping pill and pass out.

See I'm still on that Yankee Fast time and already up in the wee hours, a fact of my modern life. I work for middle easterners, my colleagues are mostly east coast and my workaday time clock would seem strange to an older generation (but not to those in the modern life).

Anyway, I pulled it off. The dude rescued my cell phone, the email was timely, hit his smart phone as he got out of the rental. Its being over nighted back to me.

Found out I may have to go to new England next week, yuk.

But this evening and tomorrow - MOUNTAINS. The laptop time on the plane confirmed, partner lined up and confirmed... we are going CLIMBING baby. Rain or shine, as she's one of those fools like me who thinks any 'up' in the mountain world is climbing and if you can't do style A there are 10 other styles you CAN do in the rain and we seem to like em all.

So anyway, this is the standard hubbub of the modern world and it only scratches the surface at the madness of my schedule, and the things I have to juggle to make ends meet, and still meet my ends. Mostly things are undone, the loose ends of my various schemes waving around in the air like the Hydra's hairdo, haha. Grab a holt of a tendril of my life and you may get bit. I apologize... I'm not in charge of all my faculties and it IS my fault.

But please give me credit... as weak willed and low character as I may be? What I do? I do out of and for love. I really do. I try to do right, I try my best. And I try the hardest to bring home the bacon for my girls.

Like my Kaity, who turned 16 yesterday!!!!11111 :-) :-) :-)

And I made her party! (and she didn't cry, she didn't even want to)

And I got to see Marie really cut loose and dance for a bit... OH... MY... GOD!

I realized, as I sat there in stop and go.... I could NOT give you a run for your tour guide money. So come show me round my town! Especially the train museum. But I warn you - I can picture most of the locomotives and train cars in there in my head, quite vividly. Love the dining car and the mail car and those engines...
