If you happen to be in Bishop this summer stop in and see the summer guest exhibit at Mountain Light Gallery. Sierra Photographers features the work of four long time Eastside artists and a token westside guy (we all love you anyway Jerry!):

Vern Clevenger
Jim Stimson
Londie Garcia Padelsky
John Dittli
Jerry Dodrill

The show is up through Fall 2012, with an artists reception this Friday, July 20th, 5:30 - 8:30 pm

Too bad the family is so unsupportive of Tony Rowell. Kind of a sad thing to see happen to a very nice guy.

Don, I haven't heard anything.

But, I thought I'd post that Creekside Inn has many of Rowell's prints on display in the hallways and lobby.

Also ran into Vern taking photos at the vista point going down the Sherwin grade last week. He said he has never got a good photo of Mt. Tom from that spot. :) He seemed persistent to get one.

Hey JD!!!

Yeah, stayed at the Creekside a few months ago and was amazed at all the fine stuff on the walls.
Yes, they seem well secured. 😈

Yes. Confirmed that Tony was admitted to the hospital with pneumonia and died. RIP Tony.

Sorry to be abrupt, but that's all I know at this time.

Can't believe it! If I have my facts correct, Tony closed the Mountain Light in Bishop ...... what a year or two ago and moved to the Bay Area. I had been trying to get a picture of his Dad in Tuolumne for our Tuolumne Climber book so have tried to keep in touch. Was fortunate to get to know him the some years I worked at TPR. Crazy, he is truly gone?

Wow, shocking and tragic early death of Rowell’s kids. Sad to hear of this news. How did Nicole die? It still seems sacrilegious to have the Gear Exchange replace Mountain Light Gallery.

I saw Tony around Christmas, this is sad news.
We lost a Mono Basin resident suddenly this winter to pneumonia as well.
Take care of yourself people!

I really believe someone should start a Thread for Tony. I would, but I think there are others that are much better qualified!

I have so many of Galen’s Books and a few posters framed and signed. He was a huge inspiration to me. I enjoyed his writing too.

This is really sad news. Galen and Barbara are gone. Nicole, Galen’s daughter now gone. Mountain Light Gallery in Bishop closed down. Now Tony Rowell, Galen’s son has passed away.

All seems unbelievably very very sad :_(

What happens to all of Galen’s professional stock images? What happens to Tony’s professional stock images? Where do all those thousands, perhaps millions of images all go?

Ansel Adams images/stock continue to be published and are cared for. Sure would like to see Galen Rowell, Barbara Rowell, and now his son’s images/stock continue to be made available and published, and cared for.

So sad :_(

BITD Mountain magazine was sacrosanct until I saw Galen's shot of the Great Trango in the centerfold.

I had no idea such mountains existed, and carefully extracted it and put it up on my wall. (still have it)

Fast forward several decades and I see an extra large numbered print of the image for auction at an AAC dinner.

I waited for the auctioneer to say "going twice" and I bid 4 times the previous bump. The last bidder tried a small bump again but I repeated and scared him off.
Afterwards I walked over to inspect my prize and Galen was there. He read my name tag and says, "Wow, you're the guy that has put up a bunch of desert classics, and has had 2 centerfold photos in Rock & Ice."

We really hit it off, and talked for twenty minutes. We made tentative plans to rendezvous in Nevada.

Then I got the news of the plane crash!
I was blown away.

When ML closed a year and a half ago I bought 6 more large photos.
Galen's work hangs in 3 rooms of my house including an all Rowell all Patagonia room. He hangs next to Tom Tills, Peter Liks, Alex Chamberlains, Bradford Washburns, and a Neil Leifer.

I think he'd like the company. He and Brad were friends.
