Ok science fans, how big would a balloon need to be to haul a 150lb bag? Seems like maybe an easy way to haul?

I think of this frequently. Maybe helium would work better. You could float your pig up BEFORE climbing the pitch. lol

You still have that Lead before you. On many leads, that's plenty.

how about attaching a hero cam to a balloon. then you can get bird's eye shots of your hero antics.

You're going to need at least a five-foot ballon if you want it to lift a pocket camera.
As mentioned earlier, if the breeze is blowing at all, you're screwed. ( get a kite )
Illegal? Who knows? Here's a shot someone got of Delicate Arch using a helium balloon to lift his camera:

If you need to lift something heavier than a pound or two, you'll need a huge balloon.
And helium, even though it's cheaper here than anywhere else, it's still damned expensive.

We have a helium mini-blimp, about the size of a motor home, that can lift 40lbs at 9000 ft, so you need four of them. What color would you like?

haha--just in time to keep the discussion going from the el cap drop-a-bag thread.
you'll need a safety parachute for this. i understand that field experiments have already been conducted. as for the hot air supply ...

Depends on how hot the air is. let's say you heat the air up by 90F (50K) for yuks.
The density would be governed by the ideal gas law PV=nRT, with temperature being 350K instead of ambient at 300K. So density would be 300/350, or .857 as dense. Air is roughly 0.8 kg/m^3 at 7000' (http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/air-altitude-pressure-d_462.html), or 1.76 lbs/m^3, and by heating it you are getting a bouyancy of (1-0.857)*1.76 lbs/m^3, or 0.25 lbs/m^3. So for a 150 lb haul bag you need 600 cubic meters roughly (not accounting for the weight of the balloon).
The volume of a sphere is 4/3*pi*r^3, so that works out to a 34 foot diameter hot air balloon.

Well, with four motorhome size helium balloons overhead, you could probably sell advertising - although Tom E may not take your photo, then. The balloons would be handy on those high gravity days, plus might even deflect falling objects.
Ron can surely fill us in on balloon sledding.

good on you thinking outside the box like this! El Cap needs more spectacle than already exists
several thousand helium-filled party balloons have lifted men who weigh 150lbs or greater thousands of feet into the atmosphere...plus if a few 100 burst you got some wiggle room
but why not just pay some dirtbag characters to slowly winch your bags up alongside you from the top, with a 2800ft static line, attached to your harness with a 200ft leash? it would draw less attention than 5,000 latex ballons
keep it real, man

Can be deflated in a wind storm, which is good, but nobody is going to keep burning fuel while the leader is climbing so deflation at each belay is mandatory.
Therefore the REAL issues are ease of re-inflation, a remote control for the burner, and the increase in overall payload to accommodate rig and fuel.
Speaking from experience it is more fun to ride hot air balloons than deal with them.
