Thanks Michelle. That's a great photo! Here's the first voyage of Ian's beak (hand-placed) backing up the bivy.

Any ideas on how I can make the two photos right-side up. They were correctly oriented, originally, but when they posted, the program turned them sideways. It's surprising because I had no trouble at all with the pictures from the adaptive climbing clinic and Michelle's photo of Ian loaded perfectly.

It's hard to believe this week marks a year since Ian left us...it seems like just yesterday, although he hasn't really left us and never will.

Thanks to Mark H. Ian made it up El Cap one more time.

In October Michelle made a trip to Jackson Hole - we sent him down the Tram in a snowstorm - how he loved that!! (coincidentally I ended up with a screw in my hand - how fitting - he had a few surgeries from skiing this mountain!)

We 'Rocked him on The Water' (per Jackson Browne) and sent him past his favorite fishing holes beneath the Tetons through another valley he loved so much...via the Snake and Gros Ventre Rivers...on to the sea.

We know he is at peace, and his spirit lives on... through all of you.

Rock Me On The Water~Jackson Browne
Oh people, look around you
The signs are everywhere
You've left it for somebody other than you
To be the one to care
You're lost inside your houses
There's no time to find you now
Your walls are burning and your towers are turning
I'm going to leave you here and try to get down to the sea somehow

The road is filled with homeless souls
Every woman, child and man
Who have no idea where they will go
But they'll help you if they can
Now everyone must have some thought
That's going to pull them through somehow
Well the fires are raging hotter and hotter
But the sisters of the sun are going to rock me on the water now

Rock me on the water
Sister will you soothe my fevered brow
Rock me on the water
I'll get down to the sea somehow

Oh people, look among you
It's there your hope must lie
There's a sea bird above you
Gliding in one place like jesus in the sky
We all must do the best we can
And then hang on to that gospel plow
When my life is over, I'm going to stand before the father
But the sisters of the sun are going to rock me on the water now

Rock me on the water
Sister will you soothe my fevered brow
Rock me on the water, maybe I'll remember
Maybe I'll remember how
Rock me on the water
The wind is with me now
So rock me on the water
I'll get down to the sea somehow

Ian's Family.

Thought I'd share a bit about my last year since Ian passed. He had a fair bit to do with it. I remember when he posted up his excitement to be going up ZM. I remember when he got the news that cancer had returned. I remember when his leg swelled up and shut him down. His dreams and personality in his posts touched me and motivated me a great deal this year.

I thought of him often as I really got back into climbing again this year.

The story reminded in an emotional way something we all know in our heads. Life is fleeting and none know how long they have.

I lost 30lbs, did more climbing this year than I had in the last 5. Nothing noteworthy or impressive. But what a blast I've had. Obscure unimportant FA in developing a new crag, long fun easy routes, Royal Arches, Tenaya peak. By this fall I have gotten back in shape a little bit and managed some 5.11 sport stuff. Climbed in Moab, J-tree, Eastside Sierras, Tahoe. Descended middle earth. Spent a day hanging out on Mammoth ledge ElCap. Nothing to brag about but what a wonderful year of moderates and getting back in the saddle. So satisfying being back home in the mountains again.

Ian's story and posts here truly helped make this happen.

So that's my tribute to Ian. Thanks for the stoke man! A true gift you imparted to me.

Now I have to quit smoking.
