Maybe the trundlers should start putting up little plaques on the rock or writing on nearby flakes to mark the occasion where they trundled.

I was on a fire up in the Salmon River country. We saw a huge snag on top of a steep burned out area and saw the possibility. We cruised over, fired up a saw and felled the snag downhill... Most of the branches smashed off when it hit, turning the trunk into a streamlined missle. The tree immediately got a a head of speed and started leaving a swath of destruction. Terrified, we watched it fly off a cliff and continue bouncing, sliding and jumping all the way to the river, some 1500-2000 feet below us. Luckily no other firefighters or rafters were in its path. Pretty much cured me of trundling!

The large block, bottom center, has now been removed. It had a one eyed scowling face,
and hung above one's head while belaying. The top of the this block was hit by lightening,
The resulting burn caused the soil to now allow for seepage.
The seepage then built up behind the block, causing, that very dark stain.
If it had been left the freeze/thaw cycle would have Made it worse,
it had that hollow, loose Sound and moved a bit. A preemptive trundle.
It needed the Navy mans' full strength and half a tree as a pry-bar To send it.
After the fact

From today - HUGE flake! 15' tall, 4' wide and about 4" thick. Cut loose with a couple tugs from a flat-bar. 8:30 AM, 29 degrees:

I felt like that guy in the alpine trundle - you can see my hand is shaking in the video.

Trundling lost most of its allure for me after I almost lost a leg to an accidental trundle.
The sound produces a real knee jerk response. Still have nightmares decades later.

I asked this question earlier, but now that we have folks talking about the "smell" produced during trundling.
So what the hell produces that odor??? Ozone??

Winemaker! Thank you for your answer on what produces that strange sharp odor some here have mentioned that is associated with trundling.
Rock, powdered rock.
Funny. I didn't smell anything at this Sherpa rock crushing quarry in Nepal.
Seriously though, I'm hoping for a scientist to tell me what process produces what I suspect is an ozone odor, although it could well be from crushed lichen.

I've assumed that acrid smell of fresh smashed rock was ozone from sparks generated either by friction, or by static electricity. It could be released chemicals, but it doesn't seem specific to any rock type.
