Since we learned that the Boulder "Happy-Hour" organizer was going to be in our neighborhood, it seems like a Idaho party is a good idea.

Heidi & I are planning on a "Meet & Greet" Happy hour, with us supplying some water, beer, wine, and hors d'oeuvres.

City of Rocks Campsite #20 at 7:00 PM on Tuesday July 3rd.

If you plan on attending?? please RSVP on this thread, or if you don't want the world to know------shoot me a PM. I need to get a handle on quantity of snacks & drinks!

We are requesting no dogs at this event-----please!

They are attending, but if someone wants to share our large camp, (their own tent or van, no dogs please) they are welcome.

Oh! fellow campers can't express displeasure with my loud snores during the night!

I've only climbed at CoR once, for two days. Then it rained. Are people planning on being there for four or five days before/during/after the 3rd? In other words, will there be people I can belay and stuff? And what about camping - would I need to make a preservation?

Relic - not Pente - she's only about 8 years old. Her predecessor Puma was also a traveling rock climbing cat (having the only Feline Ascent of a dome in Tuolumne. Pente got tooled on and attempted ascent in Tuolumne though on a leash). I'll have to ask BrassNuts about Puma in Yosemite. She was B.C. (before Crimpergirl). :)

You have no such thing (as a two door Jeep Cherokee). Cherokee is a station wagon thing, I used to have one before I got tired of putting up with an overpriced under-performing under-sized and expensive to repair consumer box with an "electronic" (Japanese) four wheel drive that blows out every time a fuse blows, stranding you wherever. ((... OK, its a fusible link, even worse, its harder to find and replace in the wild. And its UNDER the car, dammit.))

2 door Cherokee (A "Sport"; also known as a Jeep POS.)

You (Skully) have a Jeep pickup, also known as a Comanche.

2 door Comanche (IE: a TRUCK)

(His vehicle looks very similar to this one, only more dents and rust. You 'Topians will know it from the 30 pounds of aluminum beer cans rolling around the back.)

You actually have a far superior vehicle for a climber. You can't get much sh#t inside a Cherokee and you'd have to be a 10 year old or a midget to comfortably sleep inside one. A Comanche can be piled high and the tailgate dropped for floor space. (Don't you have the one with the auto transmission?)

But if you keep saying you got a Cherokee nobody is going to find you.

How about telling them to look for a slim, handsome, middleaged man with a lot of hair?

When they find me, I'll point you out and send them over.

I have actually found this interesting, somewhat.

Shullys rig that is.

I have made a two hour research of the jeep history of models, and NOWHERE do I find a Jeep pickup being actually listed as a Cherokee. Oh, there are those who writing general information articles call it a "Cherokee Comanche", but only as an admission and homage to the Comanche sharing parts from the front bumper to behind the drivers seat with the Cherokee, but nowhere does the manufacturing timeline ever show a "pickup" style Cherokee that was not a one off, That is, especially manufactured, as the two row seating produced when you chop a Cherokee in half and weld a pickup bed on the back.

As far as I can imagine, Shullys pickup model is most likely a re-manufactured vehicle, that got the dog house off a Cherokee after a crash that left it almost totaled. The fit would be perfect as the two machines shared the front end completely.

Most people don't know this, but while most states require a vehicle listed as "totaled" to be marked on the title some way as "remanufactured" or some other wording that attempts to protect the consumer from buying cars that have been extensively rebuilt, some states do not make this requirement. Locally for us westerners, the most significant state is Nevada.

In Nevada you can actually take two identical vehicles, both totalled completely, cut them in half and weld the remaining good halves back together, and then take whichever title you feel like and claim the car is the same one as was originally titled. Fresh title is issued from the state of Nevada same as any other so no evidence remains (officially).

Often a "Carfax" will show a car as being an easterner's car, then it is sold to someone in Nevada, where after repairs, its sold with a Nevada title to someone who takes it out of state and sells it somewhere else, cleaning up the suspect Nevada Title.

I suspect your pickup with the Cherokee Nameplate is one of these. A crashed frame that has had (at the least) matching-used fenders put on it off a wrecked Cherokee.

References: Wiki -- Jeep Cherokee SJ
-- Jeep Cherokee XJ
-- Jeep Cherokee KJ
-- Jeep Cherokee
-- Jeep Comanche MJ

Here (below) is the Wiki Timeline of all jeep products, it clearly shows a very short timeline for Jeep Comanche, and nothing called a "Cherokee MJ" (which is the model of the Pickup framed model with the necessary suspension changes to produce a pickup.)

Cherokee vs Comanche production years
Cherokee vs Comanche production years

Jeep Comanche

The Jeep Comanche (designated MJ) is a pickup truck version of the Cherokee compact SUV that was produced from 1985 (and was marketed as a 1986 model year[2]) to 1992. Rear wheel (RWD) and four-wheel drive (4WD) models were available, as well as two cargo box lengths of six-feet (1.83 metres) or seven-feet (2.13 metres).

Sorry, but after considerable research and fact checking, I must still stand by my "spew". You don't have a Cherokee, you got a Comanche. Not everything is exactly what it seems from the writing on the box. Sorry if somebody told you different...

(...you never noticed?)

DUDER!

Say its not so!

You are one of the few I was hoping to meet. Hear your voice, see the shell you are trapped in.

But you do what you can after the work is done. Agriculture and husbandry require dedication beyond most peoples imagination.

Many years ago (McCarthy era) my father-in-law was subpoenaed by the US Congress to testify on the state of Communism in Idaho. He flat refused, stating that he didn't have time for such bullsh#t, that he had crops that needed tending and harvest, and that if Congress didn't send him workers to do the work in his stead, he wouldn't come.

A story sworn to be true by my wife.

Hope you can make it, but "Dayamn" if you can't.

As far as thread drift, perhaps Skully can send me his VIN and we can look up just exactly what he's got. Hard to argue with the VIN.

It was "mildly breezy" Monday & Tuesday nights at The City, and I shivered in the shade whenever it overtook me on Tuesday.

Mark, one of my old climbing buddies who hasn't climbed in years, went to The City with Heidi and me, and I warmed him up on Monday, then Donini kindly put the rope up on some harder routes on Tuesday for us.

I have spent much of the last two weeks at City of Rocks, climbing with Donini, Heidi, and other friends.

This weekend! I'll see what I can do for whitewater-training with my beginning IK (inflatable-kayak) students. One of them is the permit holder for our late July Middle Fork Salmon trip.

As I have learned: it is self-defeating to kill or injure the permit-holder before the river-trip.

Monday: I'm back to City of Rocks to hopefully meet up and climb with Locker, his friends, and Brokedown.

When did they reopen Twin Sisters?

I think the Twin Sisters area, with camping, has always been open excepting the main, namesake formations, the Twin Sisters themselves. There's a gob of climbing (and some nice campsites) out there.

Uhhh...I mean, yeah, its closed, its closed! Ha ha.

Sure, there's camping, and that was historically one of the only places in the entire area that actually had a pit toilet. And it was possible that they had reopened the Twin Sisters, which is a FINE multipitch climb and one of the longest in the area, outside of Chinamans head (Castle Rock) (Is that right? Been a long time)

But the last I had heard, the prohibition was still on, although I never really understood why. So when I read them talking about climbing there, I naturally assumed they hadn't known about the closure. We used to honor it as the local jefe's where always pretty decent about allowing us what we wanted to do, so we gave back equal respect. Course, if it hadn't been for the park becoming a reserve it never would have been closed, so a lot of us were kinda tee'd off about the original closure.

But its been a lot of years since I spent more than a day or two a year there, so who knows?

Camping there gets you out of the main area which is nice. But I don't usually stay in the park any more.

Its a shame, as I said, its a FINE climb with GREAT views. Its nice knowing you ain't planning to try and beat the prohibition, every year a few do, or at least try and it kinda leaves a bad taste as most of the rest of the park is open except what is still private land... like the walkoff on Elephant rock? I think that one is still technically an illegal walkoff, though I don't think the rancher tries to enforce it.

Been a long time, and boundaries and prohibitions change. Asking the Staff is polite when you see them wandering about.

I wonder if its time to try and get the twin sisters reopened again. There has never been a really good excuse for it that I have ever heard. Preserving the "viewshed" is weak, as face it, most of the tourists looking at twin sisters do so from so far away that they could never see a climber, and after all, the main routes that have been lost are all on the other side anyway. Perhaps you might need to create a new rap route for the descent... I seem to recall the exit is on the backside, not sure ...

But the route itself was indeed one of the best in the area, and it was a significant loss to climbers.

By now a few changes in power structure and personnel has occurred and the idea might get more traction again. Most of the other annoyances in the area have been worked out ... like the problems of private land under checkered demon and those routes on Elephant mentioned above. (very many people never respected those particular closures anyway, unless there was a authority figure standing there at that moment, so it was a larger problem than it should have been.)

Maybe its time to take up Twin Sisters again.

The smoke is greatly reduced this morning, and airport visibility reported as 10 statute miles. Yesterday it was below VFR minimums at 2.5 miles (3 miles is necessary for VFR). Brian-

Last time I checked, they didn't have my favorite brews: Bohemia! My second fave: Modelo Especial; third: Corona. Rock City didn't have any of these.

Unfortunately, they only have GOOD beers! Harharhar!!!

Not that our brethren to the South make BAD beer.

Skully, you're out there again! ANIMAL!!!

Oh yeah, in case I hadn't said, I sent that climb we hiked out to, White Lightning. It turns out all you need is ONE rack and ONE rope, not THREE racks and NO rope!!!

It was fantastic! Mostly overhanging hand jams but you get fingers to cupped hands up in there. It was the most pure jamming I got on at the City and very solid at "5.10a". Maybe they were thinking it mostly felt like 10a for every.damn.move!

SkullY: Re your question?
So should I bring anything of note?

A chair if you want to rest.

We will be bringing 24-36 cans on ice of every climber's favorite kind of beer: Free!

We will probably bring a decent brand of box red & of white wine. If attendees want more, or better: they had best look out for themselves.

Somehow, I didn't end up with a party night photo of our hot-climbing Idaho friends Kim & Pete.

Bump! I just arrived home after a very difficult flight due to weather considerations. The GOOD NEWS is it's raining here in Wyoming!! Woot, woot!

The Flight Service Station operated by Lockheed-Martin called the weather a Monsoon flow, which is great for all the fires, but grounded my return until very late. I arrived in Casper at 2156 hrs, exactly 4 minutes before the Fixed base Operation closed for the night; I did get my airplane towed inside out of the weather as a result.

It's too late for me to do any pictures, but tomorrow...

This was actually more than a "meet and greet," since many groups took off on various climbs the next day: Skully & Brian in SLC ent their way, and Fritz, Heidi, hossjulia, and I went over to the east face of Bath Rock for our fun activities. The temperature (by City of Rocks standards) was too high for many tastes by noon on the 4th, and the fun in camp continued.

We all enjoyed the Boulder contingent, and Pente, the supermodel cat in her finery!

Brokedown! Glad you made it home without encountering "cumulogranite" clouds enroute!

Indeed! There was climbing, but I didn't take photos, except while walking in we noticed Brass Nuts & Crimpergirl on a rather difficult route on Parking Lot Rock: Cairo 11a.
Credit: Fritz

The afternoon was a bit warm, and after a very late lunch, we bid Scully & Brian farewell, and Brokedown, Stein, Hossjulia, Heidi, & I sought shade in camp.

We discovered that Michelle had got something in an eye, that camp medicine could not cure. Crimpergirl had to drive her to the county hospital in Burley, where the problem was sucessfully treated.

Cocktail hours started early with the mandatory "here's to cheating death" toast.

Pete & Kim arrived back from a day of climbing hard and we worked up a yummy shared dinner party.

Stein warmed up the crowd by showing us how much fun the straitjacket could be.
Stein Sitzmark restrained.

Kim agreed that restraint was needed so she could Houdini out of the straitjacket. She couldn't.

I had a fabulous time, thanks to Fritz & Heidi, Crimpergirl & Brassnuts, Stein, Kim & Pete, BrianSLC, Skully, Brokedown, et all. The giant key lime pie was amazing. Pente was precious. So cute.

The night of the 4th was a hoot. I noticed the over 50 crowd was the loudest in camp. (Promptly done at 10 mind you.) Playing with a straitjacket, wide angle SLR and hoops to classic rock. Really loud classic rock. Great "pot-luck", and not a "merican flag in site. yah-hoo.

Had not climbed there for 20 years, and sure enough, part way up both top-ropes, I vividly remembered them. Fun stuff.
