romance--significantly alive and well here.

i can't post my favorite picture of mariko, but i'll give you the caption:

at the far left, my s.o. wields a large mallet and raises a glass of sake. obediently joining the toast, left to right, a researcher rumored to be on the short list for a nobel prize, an internationally renowned humanities professor, the odd university chancellor, and a major benefactor.

she had a long career herding cats at ucla. one professor was giving her office a notoriously bad time once, but we happened to be doing a little spring mountaineering just then. she'd never used an ice ax before, but she took to it right away. kearsarge pass was choked with snow, and i warned her about stepping too close to boulders and breaking through. sure enough, it happened, and she got a scrape on her leg, but insisted on posing for a picture brandishing the ice ax, with blood dripping brightly down her shin. she posted it on her door at work with the caption "bring it on". the guy avoided her office for a month.

now she's happily retired from administratrix duties and doing what she loves. a beauty who can also create beauty is a rare beauty indeed. MisterE knows this.

No offence Marty, but I'd like to know how you ended up with that supermodel? You must walk softly and carry a big stick lol:-) (you ARE kind of wearing a Teddy R. hat in that one pic)

Lots of lucky people on here, and I'm one of them.

the day was shaped like a butterfly,
i, and realized that now,
the all-empowered enitity
that usually stimies the celebration between sleeps,
is actually without linear qualities
and forever, that other imponderable that
crushes the free spirit until it becomes fear
is synonymous with never,
the most comfortable tide
in which my souls drift.

and im the same as i would be
if i hadn't ever happened.
