Slide show from a forthcoming book:

http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2012/05/20/sunday-review/20LIGHT.html

The valley supplies half of the fruits and vegetables for the United States. ...

We saw this fruit bowl of America being planted with its final crop of ticky-tacky cookie-cutter houses and gated communities with homes overlooking artificial lakes. ...

Humans were not the only ones struggling for a home. The valley is one of the greatest North American flyways for millions of migrating birds, and their nesting ground has been stripped down to contain almost unimaginably big fields of crops that donít accommodate animal life. The use of pesticides on this scale was mind-boggling. The Central Valley has provided the dream for many, but it is also deeply shadowed.

The issues in the valley are the global challenges of our generation: water, land use, population, growing economic disparity.

By Ken and Melanie Light. The "final crop" is one heckuva way of putting it.

Thanks for the link. I now have both a NYTimes account and a viewing of the slide show. Very stark.

I'm actually in the Sacramento Valley, in the Cosumnes River watershed, SE of Sacramento.

The farther you stray from the Delta the more ornery the fog of winter and heat of summer.

I lived in Stockton (25 years ago), Modesto, Turlock, Salida and Elk Grove.

I really like downtown Sacramento though with the new Kings arena under construction there is a bit of rent spiral (though cheap by bay area standards)

Very nice selection, DMT.

May I join you--I haven't many, mind you.

Merced River bridges in the boonies (Shaffer RR bridge and Amsterdam Rd. bridge).
