hey there say, for all you garden folks... or tree folks....
my ol' tree is crawling with these... :O
edit: i know--tree bark does not 'crawl'.... but: meaning, my tree-bark has vast amounts of these crawling things, as a swarm, ALL over it, on lower-to-upper 5? feet, and most likely more...
do not remember seeing this last spring... perhaps i was not in the right spot, at the right time...
or it is new? hope it is not to ruin my tree... and
hope these little bugs FLY OFF somewhere, :O
WHAT ARE THESE??? *nearly said: what is this?
hopefully some of you greatoutdoor folks, KNOW about the smaller greatoutdoors of your woodsy backyards, or, gardens...
NOTE--FOR CLIMBING STORIES:
feel free to share all your 'bug's you have run into, in your travels, or yard.... (bees, beetles, etc, etc)...
lets also see what climbers have run into, too, on the rocks :O
in the meantime:
any help from anyone who KNOWS what these are, is much appreciated!
edit:
(may have come out of the dirt, from watering? and thus, won't hurt the tree?)
edit--if they are ants:
i DID find this:

Sorry I can't help with your bug problem.
Here are a couple pics of a lady bug swarm I encountered on a scramble up Mt Stanton the other day. There were 10's of thousands of them hanging out in crevices near the summit. I like lady bugs so it was pretty cool for me.
Good luck with your trees!

the ants in joshua tree seem to go through an annual cycle in which the nest develops and prospers through early spring, then 'long about june it turns into a micro version of l.a. international airport. the tiny winged monsters taxi up for takeoff and set out, i'm sure, to establish anthills anywhere they can get away with them.
the josh ants are mean, and sneaky too. i was kibbitizing some boulderers once when vague pain signals began reaching my brain. come to find out one of these devils had crawled up inside my pants and had commenced chewing away on my sacrum. the bumps lasted for three weeks. beware, the time is nigh.

hey there say, all... thanks for helping out...
all night i wondered if i did the right thing, to just let them be...
someone helped out on facebook too...
i did read that if they become huge trouble that apple cider vinegar would kill the nests--not sure if that was true....
but you know... they WERE gone this morning... :O
just like someone had shared... wow, was i happy!!!
tree did not look nice that way at all, :(
they may still have a nest somewhere, but if they don't live in the tree,
the tree should be okay... don't know yet but i will have to check the tree out...
thanks for sharing...
yes--turned out, they were ants in the winged stage...
i knew some ants did that, but NEVER EVER SUSPECTED that
a whole swarm of them would abound like that, :O
that's why i couldn't figure what they were...
(they did LOOK like ants, so i should have suspected) :))
thanks so very very much,
aya, lolli, tony bird, to each and everyone of you all...
chewbacca:
say, thanks! ... and thanks for the ladybug swarm story, too!!!
we get them here, certain times of the year...
(though in south texas, folks COULD get swarms of tics) :O
and swarms of butterflies... :)
edit:
new trouble (was here last year, and years before, too)
had the little boy out there that i was babysitting, and seems near
everywhere we look, there was a daddylonglegs, :O
ohhhhhhhhh my... :(

WE get weird flying ant swarms sometimes. A very localized phenomena usually. Unpleasant to pass through unawares, though.
Cheers!

I am partial toward lepidoptera, and apparently the feeling is mutual:

This little one hung out with us for about 15-20 minutes near Knob Hill. That was about 2 years ago. I had the same thing happen at Lover's Leap 2 weekends ago.

hey there say, guys... thanks so much! thanks again...
say, as to the butterfly--i've seen those before, i think?... enjoyed them a lot (or one that was similar)...
on a good note:
we have had two on-going butterfly visitations:
one that loves to sit where the dog 'does her business'...
and the other that loves to sit on the play-area toys (bright colors? perhaps)...
1--spice bush swallowtail??
2--red admirals
tony:
wow, i see what you mean about the wine-label train of thought...
(say, he is wrong about the fire ant--ONE never bites, you see, it is the whole dad-gum swarm--ask little kids that stumble upon them, :(
my friend's son, knew all too well).... :(
