zepplin, simply a better band. what you hear is a level of synthesis rarely seen.

cream were 3 good musicians playing together, but lacked the cohesive vortex to really make it fly. its the sound of 3 guys loathing each other, which is part of their charm but didnt develop into anything. blind faith were a much better band.

pages playing has infinite depth and space for the others to punch thru with too, whilst clapton i personally find is a great guitar player but a characterless musician. reminds me of those brilliant japanese 5 year olds who can hammer out Rachmaninoff but lack the depth to make it interesting.

cream should have made another 2 albums, but zepplin should have stopped 2 short. better to burn out than fade away yadda yadda.

cream make me think of smoking hashish, zepplin make me think of smuggling it.

gee, it had not occurred to me that Cream's hatred for each other never did develop into anything

or is it that Cream the band never did develop into anything?

you should be a rock journalist, such good analysis!

Why can't we just love them both?

cream produced a bunch of great acid pop songs and noodling jams with some nice filler then fell apart. not a whole lot of diversity in there as they didnt do enough for long enough. would have been the same if zepplin broke up after 2 albums. cant go anywhere if youre not together can you?

rock journalism no thinks. ill stick with a real job.

I dunno... I really liked the the Monkees show...

The Monkees TV show was heads and shoulders above the Beatle's TV show.

I think Zep wrote better songs where as Cream's thing was live improvisation.
Zep had better vocals too.
British blues based but the similarity ends there.

Wow, Tim Buckley on the Monkees TV show??
Thread drift while I indulge myself... Buckley here had an interesting folk/jazz ensemble of 12 string guitar, upright bass, electric guitar and vibes.

For the topic...
Cream: Better musicians.
Led Zepplin: Better music.

Both excellent. Would have been even better without drugs.

Without drugs it's possible both bands would be going full on today with even better stuff than the fantastic stuff they did deliver.

No question - Led Zep. Two albums does not a legacy make.

Why can't we just love them both?

Because zep simply bites. Unless you’re a frat rat type.

Cream not even in the same league. kashmire is otherworldly. I love all the references to Tolkien. One of the times I read the trilogy was listening to Physical Graffiti. I still think of the Lord Of The Rings when I hear that music.

So who were the best musicians?
I would say Ginger Baker was up there because of his jazz work and African work.
Yet Bonham was a better rock n roll drummer.
Page is probably a better guitarist because he is very versatile.
Plant has a place near Joshua Tree so maybe he has the best taste.

"Beck blew them both away."
Not surprised as he one the best guitar players from the UK. Head and shoulders above Jimmy and Eric.
