I have an older NF VE24, that is bomber, but am now looking for something newer, smaller, easy to set up, and bigger than a bivy sack.

What ya got?

BD Highlight. http://canyoneeringusa.com/shop/product.php?productid=16427&cat=265&page=1

Of course, a little more detail on what you want it for, priorities, etc. might help with the suggestions.

North Face Particle 13. I've used mine alot and recommend it. Only problem is that they are not made anymore, but they do come up on Ebay from time to time.

those look like a couple of good ones.

the gear review section of this site has some good info too, but i didn't really see any one person tents.

i'm looking for a tent that i can use when car camping. I would like to be able to just pull in to the site, and throw it down.

maybe i should look at one of those high end bivy sacks too.

Go for a very light weight yet roomy Black Diamond tarp tent; Beta Light, Betamid, or Mega Light:

why does it need to be for only one person when you are car camping? Weight wouldn't be an issue. So whats the deal? Wouldn't extra room be nice in case you meet that sweetie you have been looking for?

I agree with T's suggestion on the BD Highlight. I have one and its a great, light tent that even works well in winter. That said, for slightly faster setup, though it is heavier, I prefer the BD (used to be Bibler) Eldorado for the twist fasteners - easier to manipulate than velcro. Both are great tents, with the Eldorado being stronger. If you aren't concerned with price or carrying it, go for the Eldorado.

edit - like Ekat says, for car camping I'd buy a VE25. Bomber and LOTS of space.

i used to use a 3 lb one man tent (walrus), but now use a BD Firstlight. Same weight, way more room, can sit up inside, puts up in less then two minutes and doesn´t need stakes. Long rainy weeks in base camp might not be too dry though with the firstlight extra light material. Itent or a double wall tent might be better choice in such a case.

I don't see why you need a one man tent for car camping. Larger tents are far more comfortable and don't take any longer to set up, and, besides, you might end up with a girl or boy friend, whatever your orientation might be.

I used a Mountain Hardware Solitude, and it stood up to several years of storms, evil wind, and the like in the Arctic. It was tiny, so staying cooped up in storms sucked. If you layed it out with the feet into the wind, it could handle 70 mph constant wind.

It didn't shed snow well, so you had to kick it off from the inside. Eventually it would bury the bottom of the fly and you would have to get outside and dig it out.

Alas, I had to ditch it over a blown zipper. Can't get a zipper fixed up there. Just order a new tent. The newer, not to be named MH tent didn't hold up for jack.

Having some stakes isn't that big of a deal.

Living for weeks or months in a little one person tent has its drawbacks and requirements, but that sucker was light and bomber.

Consider a super light 2 person tent. More roomy.

Not much need for a tent in Cali though.

Tents are nice when it is snowing or raining hard I suppose.

Climb Half Dome on the Full Moon, easy Peasy.

I too had a great experience with Eureka tents. A so-called 2 man tent, though. I abused it thoroughly & it resisted my mix of method & madness for quite a while, considering. I was pleased, anyway. Bottom line, that.
