Moving to Denver in late September from the great bay area of sf!!! I'm excited about being able to call the Rockies my home, however on my recent job/gym/house hunting trip I learned that Denver might be the most deprived city in the us when it comes to decent indoor climbing facilities. How is it that I have over ten state of the art rock gyms to choose from in the greater bay area (this doesn't even include sac area gyms) and almost all offer 10,000-25,000 sqft of climbing, yoga, fitness equipment, and classes such as spin, cross fit, and trx training, yet Denver, the biggest city in CO, home of some of the worlds most amazing outdoor climbing (eldo canyon, boulder, Estes, flat irons, etc, etc), has thresh climbing gyms...of which only one boasts over 10,000 sqft of climbing, all have goofy hours (minus dbc...but what they makenup for in 24 hr access, they lack in age, and over pricing), and none have any sort of decent general fitness equiptment or classes, and all are STILL priced over 55$ a month (which I'm fine with paying if any offered the appropriate amenities, seeing as how I can pay around $60 a month here and have access to multiple locations like with pg or touchstone.)
This leaves me hoping there is a future best friend out there with a sick home wall, or a series os dry winters so I won't need plastic. Any advice or connections to be made about that home wall???
Really any climbing beta would be greatly appreciated! I would say that first and foremost I am a boulderer (this is because I have had trouble finding a consistent climbing partner and it's convienance), but I love the ropes too! Nothing like placing gear and climbing multiple pitches! I am approximately a v4-6 boulderer and barely a sub .12 climber and upper .10 leader occasionally leading into the 11s.
In the end who cares about the gym (although it is a bummer about the lack of both quality and quantity of gyms in Denver) situation, I am psyched to see what the Rockies have to offer after having explored such awesome Cali/western states areas as Yosemite, Tahoe, smith rocks, Squamish and the eastern sierras...

Uh.... Eldo and Boulder and the Flatirons are in Boulder.
You should consider moving here, to Boulder, if you want to climb. For indoor we have Boulder Rock Club, Movement, the Spot, and Cats. Lots of Boulder folks work in Denver.
Denver is more like a city, people there dress up to go out to dinner and worry about who has what new SUV.
Also for real climbing you'll be driving 1 plus hours from Denver, or 4 minutes from Boulder?
But whatever the case, Welcome to Colorado!!!

If you move to the Denver/Boulder area you don't have to worry about indoor or outdoor climbing anymore. As far as I can tell, all they do down there is have Happy Hour get-togethers and talk about climbing.

@prod...I would, but I'm moving to Denver for/with the lady friends as she will be attending nursing school. Trust me already tried to talk her into living in boulder.
@capt. Ive been a member at rockzilla, and rocknasium, and a frequenter at touchstone and planet granite.
@locker. Where is better than boulder that you hail from? And what did I say about shoes??
In terms of driving an hour plus, I aint scurred. I've spent more than half my life making the three hour drive to Tahoe to snowboard and climb. As frequently as once a week or more in the past few years...I've even been know to drive four hours to Yosemite for just a day trip...

Locker, you live closer to Boulder than Denver, or about 1/2 way in between.
To the OP. If you make less that 65K a year, there are some great financial aid programs here in Boulder. I have a friend who bought a place in the Steel Yards, the same place where she was renting. Her rent was $1600 a month for a 2 bedroom unit. Her mortgage is $750 a month for the exact same floor plan.

Boulder is over priced...........
Denver or one of the Western Burbs is just fine.....
I live on the West side of "The City"......
30 min drive to Eldo......
15 to Clear Creek, (edit crap pile)
I mean why clip crappy sport routes when Eldo is 15 mins further away.
Lumpy maybe an hour,
As if your truly a climber you get up EARLY and there is no traffic
This is the West you drive to do everything....
The gyms are OK but there are so many climbable days outdoors you can work and crank outside a good portion of the year.
The rest is just spray >>>>>>>>>>>>>>
BTW when you get to town if you need a partner hit me up.....

Tadalac...Wow,sorry to give ya' shite.I graduated from HS in Napa and really didn't think they even had a climbing gym. Really,just ribbin' ya. Along the real line of yer post though.Don't do it!!

@ mike m....hahaha maybe if I wasn't in search of any actual rock I would go there...but for now I'll save it for when they make climbing accessible walkers. Nobody like the gym that much, and it's definitely a small downside to living in/near the Rockies, but it's nice to have a place to go when you only have an hour or two and a good place to hang out and spray/make climbing connections and other friends. Surprised that sf (which is really about 3hours+ from any decent amount of quality climbing, while close to plenty of average climbing) has so much more to offer gym wise. Especially since I feel like everyone is always talking about how active of a community colorado has. I just want a place to do some training for climbing, maybe a little yoga and or crossfit or trx training all in the same place for one monthly payment. Don't want to have to have two or three gym memberships just to get my cross training in.

Get a mountain bike/roadie, ice tools, skis, ect. No climbing gyms where I live so you just have to go outside. Plenty to do in the Denver area. You could probably climb 300 days a year at Morrison, Eldo, the flat irons, horsetoodth, Garden of the Gods, the South Platte, and Table Mountain.

Less emphasis on gyms in the front range because you don't have to drive 6 hours to get to decent rock.

Most of that "financial aid" is city subsidized purchase that comes with deed restrictions. You'll pay less, but you also don't get to participate in any appreciation. You'll also have to prove that you're poor and proud of it.

The best of both worlds in Denver. I'd love to live there. The only way I could buy in Boulder is if I made a ton of $$$ in the city. Isn't it always that way. Good luck in Colorado fella.
