Okay Big Wall Enthusiasts,
I'm about 80% fully packed for the wall. The water bottles are in the bags but not filled, I wanted to make sure that everything fit.
I have about 60% of my food packed, about 95% of my clothes, 100% of the hardware and I promise that I'm not going to empty the packs and check it again before I leave! I still lack my camera, phone and vid camera batteries and most of the Technology bag stuff.
I don't have any toilet paper packed, can't forget that!
My gear weight adds up as follows.
Sentinel Pack/Tag Bag with ALL the gear in it including my harness and gear slings but not my aiders, 53 Pounds
Quarter Dome Haul Bag with bottles but no water and not all of the food, 37 pounds
Half Dome Haul Bag with bottles but no water, Ledge Fly, not all of the food or clothing but 98% of everything else, 40 pounds
The Ledge, two 70m ropes in rope bags and my Waste Case (with my pee bottle, a bit of toilet paper and 11 WAG bags), 48 pounds
I'm planning for 10 days on the climb and 3 quarts per day. 7.5 gallons, and two days more so 9 gallons. 9 x 8.33 = 75 pounds of water.
I'm figuring I lack about 30 pounds of food, clothes, technology and MIsc.
So 53+37+40+48+75+30=283 pounds total!
Now don't forget that I won''t be "hauling" that much. I won't be hauling my harness, aiders, jugs, 1/2 of the gear, or the two ropes (two ropes both 70m, 10.2 lead rope and 9.8 static haul line, weigh 23 pounds). Let's say that my harness, aiders, jugs, and leading gear weight, what?, 25 pounds? Right there is almost 50 pounds I won't be hauling so we could call my off the ground haul bag weight, 233 pounds. 110 pounds of that is easily food and water, so I start the hike down with 283 - 110 = 173 pounds (you won't be hauling some stuff but you'll be carrying it all up to the base and down from the top).
It's always interesting to see actual weight vs. estimated weight.

hey Mark, what are you gearing up for?
2 weeks ago I bought a digital scale from the local cooking shoppe. The scale weighs items up to 11 lbs. It ranks among the best gear I have ever bought for climbing. I've weighed EVERYTHING with this, and it's astonishing what weighs what
good luck

It is, and aside from the pins and heads I'll bet you I'll use it all.
Iron Hawk solo.
I bought a hanging digital scale last year for $55. It's good up to 400 pounds and +/- .5 of a pound.

Your gear might be lighter if you skip the barbell.

I knew there was a reason I don't climb routes that I have to camp on! Really though, it is pretty fun to think about those weights. Even on a free climb that will take a few hours. My buds and I will sometimes chat that issue out multiple times over the hours prior to an ascent.
Have fun up there Mark! You're set up looks pretty dang tight.
Isn't there a 5.9 slab that's mandatory up there? Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the Hawk flies high...
I've gotten so anal about weight that I have a spreadsheet ranking my Oz biners from lightest to heaviest, my #2 Camalots from lightest to heaviest, and so on

283??? That was me alone doing the Nose in 91.. Only 15 pounds heavier than when I did the Son of Heart in 90..
Lets see. 283 plus a runt Iron Monkey + 10 gallons water + Iron and big wall stuff = a whole shitload of stuff...

you big wall climbers dont do enough alpine climbing. Your supposed to measure wieghts in ounces, not pounds!
hey i noticed that you sling your beaks through the hole at the top. I guess that makes sense eh?

Hey Mark,
What's with the dumb-bell in the first photo?
You don't do curls while on the wall do you?
I'd think that carrying all the gear up the wall would be plenty of exercise.

Okay, yeah, that dumbbell is not going. Those tape up things next to the hammer are a couple of butterknife holsters I made. And yes, runout 5.9 on the last two pitches, I'm really looking forward to them actually!

Tarbuster...were you goofing? 100 carabiners? Also, a wayback question...why did y'all always tape your water bottles? Were they made differently back then, hauled outside the bag, or was it just fashion?
Nice catch, Pete...I didn't notice the three hammers...for the Nose.
Mark, if you're driving and stop through Berkeley, I'll give you the 1 lb. hook I never got to the P.O.
