Got an upcoming trip to climb in Zion. Looks like South and Watchman are all full for most of the season. Does anyone know of alternative options for camping? All dirtbag options, email me....

Thanks in advance.

mosquito coast. mile marker 24? off route 9. free sandy camping on the edge of the virgin river.. or lava point but its only 6 primitive sites..first come first served but free. top of kolob reservoir rd north of virgin.. lava point is probably 30+ miles outside the park though.

Mosquito cove is CLOSED. don't camp there. Lava point won't open till later in the season. Check out gooseberry mesa.

Hint: look at your maps for dirt roads leading to BLM lands.

The out of park camping around Zion has become a bit of an issue since the Mosquito Cove camping spot was permanently closed after the flooding in 2010. The next closest options to the park is the smithstonian butte road which leads to the road to Gooseberry mesa. In the last 2 weeks the BLM has posted signs on this road that there is no camping withing 1/2 mile of the road. Camping on Gooseberry Mesa is still fine though the road requires a vehicle with clearance. The next closest option would be on the BLM land near the town of Virgin. Dalton wash, sheepsbridge road, and the kolob terrace road all have BLM access with legit places to camp.

What about that camping area a couple miles up the Kolob Res. Road from Virgin...not too close, but good camping along the creek..

Hot and smokey.

Brianhead fire with Springdale looking to be 104F tomorrow.

Find a hotel with air conditioning...and good air filtration...

Just came from there. Super hot and smoked out. Climbing Angel's Landing would be a waste of time until smoke clears.

The BLM road above Rockville as suggest to me by Brian of SLC several years ago is now thoroughly posted. Land managers are onto the hack.

I always stay at a hotel in Springdale because I can. If there are dirtbag options they are for the clever.

+1, but sometimes you can get day of campsites at Watchman.

Two summers ago, my kids and I did a loop through Utah. Left Los Angeles one afternoon, arrived middle of the night in Zion. I did homework and thought I figured out BLM lands just outside the park. It turned out to be awesome!

But... moments after taking this picture, I hear a VERY angry lady yelling GET OFF MY PROPERTY!!!! I didn't hear the latching of a shotgun, but it would have perfectly fit in. I suspect she has had to deal with this a time or two. In my calm-but-hurry-up voice I say "kids, time to get up, let's go." And in about 30 seconds we are folded up and out of there. Oops. Breakfast in the parking lot in Zion.

All of the other turn-outs were labeled private property, and this one was not. In the dark of night I thought I was within the BLM area. So be careful out there, and try to figure it out in daylight.

p.s. We did the Angels Landing hike that morning, roasting hot! Had lunch on top, inner tubes in my backpack so we played on the river a bit before getting back to the car to see 104 degrees.
