Do you have a limit on numbers?

Topic Author's Reply - Apr 13, 2012 - 09:27pm PT
yes I have a limit on numbers. If I'm the only sushi chef the limit is 16.

However, you can easily get on the main list simply by being one of the first 16 to cough up the cash.

If I get another sushi chef then the number grows to 25. Then 35.

It's bad enough that I work my ass of to feed your pie holes. It's worse when people bitch that they waited in line and didn't get enough to eat. y'all deserve better...

Evel - cool, thanks for the offer. Let's see how this works out. The thing is if there is someone that is a sushi chef they want to help out. They enjoy it which is a total win-win.

At the tarbuster event there was this one guy who I didn't know who (I think) had been eyeing the bar for some time. He finally came up and asked if I'd mind if he did some rolling. I was stoked. Handed him a clean knife and and cutting board, pointed to where the fish was and off he went.

By then I had turned into a pumpkin and was exhausted so I was stoked too cuz I got to mingle with um.... yeah.....

Sonic - OK noted.

I'd love to go, but I'm very confused. Maybe this is the kind of thing where if you have to ask, the answer is "no"? But hey, it's a public forum, so I'll give it a shot, no harm in asking, right?

1 - What's the date? I've scanned through both threads and it seems to have changed, but I'm not sure if it's Aug 18th, or some other date?

B - It looks like the list is filled up, I assume we can still come and hang out, even if there's no sushi?

III - Is everyone paid up, or can I pay to bump someone off the list? (that hardly seems fair). But if so, my wife and I would like to get in on sushi, for Saturday only.

Four - If we can get in on Sushi, where and to whom should we mail a check?

Sorry for what I guess must be dumb questions, since all the other people going must already know the answers.

#100 is to announce there will be no S. Platte sushifest in the near future. I scoped out the camping last weekend and found nothing at all. I guess that means New Jack City unless one of the locals (besides Dad) can clue me in.

Elevenmile Canyon is the only place with easy access and facilities like running water and an outhouse.

Most of the camping in the Platte is undeveloped but there are standouts like Sheep Nose where Steve Cheney use to throw massive bouldering comp parties with Turkey Rocks up the road used for overflow camping and climbing, easy access but you will have to haul stuff in a .05 mile to get to the camping fire pit area and take a burly road to reach Turkey Rocks.

There is also the newer areas like Devils Head and Thunder Ridge that have good camping but the climbs take around an hour to reach.

PS. Bring mosquito spray or candles for Vedauwoo, August can be brutal.

Mid to end of next week is still OK for commitment and cash.

In fact if you are last minute that can be ok.

The only thing I'd ask if you tell me you are going to be there last minute and I then place the food order with you in mind you'll owe me even if you pull a locker.

I'm really good at these orders. I don't think we have enough people to do a honolulu fish company order. But the san diego fish is certainly up to standard.

I love this quote that t*r posted today, "The quiet steady":

http://www.supertopo.com/climbers-forum/1892686/the-quiet-steady

Unfortunately, my quiet steady was sorely lacking last Sunday:
I was pushing my limits trying to lead a Tuolumne crack climb (Little Sheba, 5.10a) -- beta from a friend was "you can either get good pro or good jams, not both." I opted for good jams and tried to power through the crux -- the only pro at my face was profanity (friends who have climbed with me will understand this). I wasn't able to reach the next jam, my foot skated out and I fell about 15 feet. Good news: the (real) pro below me held and caught my fall. Bad news: I must've twisted my foot on something on the way down and immediately knew the ankle was toast. Butt-scootched down the slabs and hopped to the car on one foot with the help of several friends. Currently doing heavy-duty RICE in attempt to be ambulatory for Sushifest.

So much to learn. I was afraid of that lead. At least I'm glad I didn't chicken out before even trying.

I would defer to Mike and Jaybro, but there’s a great free camp site 2.5 miles away (near, but not at Party Land) that would be a great site to host the dinner. That site could easily accommodate 6-7 tents. There are other sites within a short walking distance that could be used for setting up additional tents. Bathrooms and water are a mile and half away, but there is forest all around.

I'll cover you Steve, but it's ultimately Nature's call. The pay campground is a typical campground with close in neighbors, although it has water and facilities. The free campground has campsites far from neighbors, but no facilities. It's also closer to I-80, and you can hear trucks in the background pretty much 24/7.

If you are willing to camp where there is no facilities (and no cost) then how about Blair? The free camping at Vedauwoo is just too noisy. The freeway wears me out.

The area where one approaches Specterman has lots of room, is near a great trail run, and is quiet. The downside is that people would have to drive (about 15 minutes) to get to Vedauwoo.

Hey guys & gal:) There are tons of sites to escape the highway sounds that can accommodate a large group, or at least a gathering place w/satellite camping. If it hasn't been mentioned before, Upper Devil's Playground (see Mtn Proj for info) is an option. Take the road past the entrance for 3 miles, turn left on 700N. On Google maps it's also called Devils Rd. The large formation will come into view and the road will split, turn left on 700NA and then turn right and park in the area below the big rocks. Some nice person has spray painted in black some cartoonish character on the upper rocks. It's still within cell service for most carriers and you can easily send a group text out. You can also walk to some climbing areas. We like the added bonus of an extended approach, no cars and a possible moose sighting.
Since you are going in on Wednesday, it's likely it should be open. If not, there are a few other sites on 700N.
Most of the free camping has been well-loved by the locals, so be prepared to do some cleanup before you set up shop.
It's just my .02's. It's Wild-oming, adventure abounds! Have fun and bummed to miss the shindig.kar

I'm with Locker, and I would agree with Karla's suggestion, followed by Mike's. It occurs to me that I invariably get there late Friday, and have gotten used to not being able to get good sites further from the freeway. Whoever gets there first, and I'll commit to early Thursday, should scope out and secure (I've got extra coolers and some barbed wire for this purpose) the best campsite they can get. Major considerations might be:
Nice, spacious area with trees and lots of flat terrain for tents, etc.
Located away from highway noise (and other campers).
Proximity to the central area.

If we could get one of the pavilions in the main (picnic) area that would be awesome.

I followed up on Mike's suggestion yesterday. The gazebo in campground picnic area was available for Friday, so I reserved it. Unfortunately, Saturday was already taken but we have it Friday from 8am to 8pm, including parking passes for anyone staying outside the campground.

This may not work because it would require moving the sushi setup for Saturday, but it's an option to consider. Doug of course would be The Decider on this, and I've sent email to him.

So Roy and I will get in late Wednesday night. I'm not planning on settling into whatever camp we decide on. We can do that first thing Thursday morning.

Most likely we'll find a place to camp where there is cell service. Possible right? If I can get service I can get internet.

Who else is going to be around Thursday morning?

As much as I wish I was the one to make the final call i've never been there so it's tough. So all this discussion is great but also slightly confusing.

I'm leaning towards recommending the road 700N/Karla/Goat Boy option because it has worked for us in the past.
Lots of room for us all to park our cars, spread out, party up and flop down.
I don't remember car noise from the highway being too bad? (That doesn't mean that it is absent).

I like the idea of using the space that Em reserved for Friday, but I don't know about logistics in terms of moving again for Saturday night. That could be problematic/complicated, but it doesn't necessarily have to be: we perhaps would have to build a corral of cars at the 700N area by Thursday night/Friday morning to reserve it for Saturday night. Some of us would stay there both nights as well. This way we could test drive the Gazebo and see if we like it for future planning.

The area out by Blair/SpecterMan may be too far away from everything.
Just my two cents: I'm not so familiar with best options.

Hey guys,
I haven't yet cancelled the gazebo. It just occurred to me that folks camping outside the fee Area will still need to pay for day use parking to access many popular climbs, and may still want to use the day parking passes (24 of them) that are included in the gazebo fee of $30.

Besides which, SteveW wants (edit: NEEDS) shade on Friday.

PS I vote in absentia,
4 thumbs up for Asia, and Gal!!!!

Here is a map to Blair in case we wind up doing the Sushi Fest there.
Ed, Jay, Greg, and anyone who wants to join in: I propose Nature and I meet up with you all by 9 AM Thursday morning (we will be there tonight actually) at site number 11 & head to Blair first off.

We can climb there for the day and also decide if that's where Nature should set up. Sound good?
(Main criteria: cell service, flat area, low noise, shade, copacetic ambience)

Em: we'll take you up on the offer for 24 day passes at the gazebo for 30 bucks!
This Way, Friday can be our day to climb in the fee area en masse, plus have a nice picnic spot.
Question: what time is quote "check-in" at the gazebo on Friday? (Morning would be handy)
How do we handle it in your absence?

Who brings the best, booze, beer, wine and ????

Who is the PIG, who will eat everything Doug tosses at em.

Hey everyone-What a complete blast!!! I had a great time!!!!! It turns out getting there early in the morning translates to 2pm. As I was walking out of my parents house (up visiting them), my mom was saying "don't you realize it's 11 o'clock?" yes, yes I do, "Mom don't stress me out, I know, I know", and I hear mom saying as I'm walking out "and I don't want you to get on that Horn's Mother, that just looks too scary and dangerous...." So as I first arrived at camp, which was in a completely beautiful spot, and a place I had not been to yet at Vedauwoo, who should I run into but Locker & Blitzo! Now I hadn't met Locker yet, but did know Blitzo, so this seemed like the perfect duo to hang out with. They said let's go sport climb, and so I decided that I was in for this plan. Locker, it was great to meet you, you are a cool dude, and I would climb with you and Blitzo anytime! So yes, day 1 at Vedauwoo, I went sport climbing-it was very fun.

Then, back at camp, awesome people, and Nature's sweet sushi set-up. The whole deal is quite impressive, and like Eeyonkee says, you may want to just go ahead and follow the Sushi-fest around from location to location. I have been to a few fests in AZ, but wow, Nature really out-did himself-starting on Friday with a 6 hr sushi run, then on Saturday, I think it was 8 hrs of Sushi!!! Some highlights for me-The seared Ahi Tuna-it was blood red in the center, and just melted like butter! The seared yellowtail, out of this world! And the soft shell crab-amazing! All of this, and surviving several hurricane blasts with torrential rains. I was glad I had this chance to represent for the AZ crew :-)

So we went climbing on day two, this time some trad climbing. We all had fun giving Spectraman a go-Mike Friedrichs cruised it on lead. I was happy to get up it-pretty hard beginning-even just stepping up onto the thing (Jane & I were very glad we didn't epic right off the ground). So Locker, I didn't try Horn's Mother yet, I will have to be called out on that sh#t talking at a later date ;-) I then went to another climb with SteveW. It was awesome to climb with you Steve, as you remember, we were (are) never lost, just confused! We found a huge cave that was useful during several of the rain sessions. Once we found our climb, Steve cruised up on lead, then had to rap down in hail, rain, and ominous thunder. So at that time we made the always wise decision to go drink beer. We were unsure how the rest of the crew fared, but they did eventually appear after the hurricane and luckily had a near miss of a potential epic. So all was well to continue on our Sushi feasting (feeding ;-) !)

It was really cool to see everyone from Lucille fest-including Greg-who after a year out is easing back into things on... 5.11!!!! wow. Glad to see your healed up, I'm sure it felt great to be back on the rock. Em-wish you could have made it, but I hope that you heal quickly!

Jaybro, Ed, and Roy, I'm hoping Valley Massif was fantastic today-I like that place. Locker, had you gone there with them today, you may have ended up seeing a beaver ;-) !!!

ps. aplomb line would be a great name for a climb, good one, Philo.

I'm thrilled that the timing worked out and I got to be there, hang out with everyone, and meet new amazing people! Fantastic Sushi, climbing, people, conversation, and a beautiful meteor shower shared via long distance late at night.

Hey it was great to meet Steve, Locker and others that I hadn't met before. It was fun to hang out with Blitzo, Roy, all the other "greenies." As always, a joy to spend time with Jay and Ed. You're brothers to me. Catherine you're awesome and add so much to the group. Dingus Magee, keep reeling 'em in. And Nature you deserve a special thanks for bringing this crazy group together and working so hard every night. Thanks so much.

This was my third sushifest and the first one above freezing. Weird that we had to go to Wyoming to have that. Really a great weekend with a creative, fun group. Hope we all meet again soon.

"local guy" = Joe Cupps, btw high school schoolmate of mike Frierichs.
He, myself, mike, Todd skinner, & mark Jenkins all graduated from U of Wyo, the same year '82. though Joe might of been a slightly different year. Paul Piana was in school there there then as well....

Nice pictures all! This was some good times, for sure. I'm thinking we have Ed's pictures yet to come. Speaking of Ed, he gets my vote for climbing performance of the fest, with his top-rope of Spectreman (followed closely by Gal's). Of course, the only reason that Mike Friedrichs isn't in the running is we (I) expect this kind of performance from him. I mean really, for Mike to be in the running, he would have to wear skates or something.
