I heard that there were some routes in Noname Canyon, near Ridgecrest, CA. I went up there yesterday & found some routes but not what was represented on RC.com. See link http://www.rockclimbing.com/routes/North_America/United_States/California/San_Bernardino_County/Underworld/

Has anybody else ever been here & if so do they have any info on where these routes are. I found one wall with 3 routes on it but it does not match the info given on the RC.com page which is rather bereft of usable info. I believe that Vaino Kodas may have put these routes up but there is little info available.

FWIW - there is a great little route nearby that is 5.10 & is overhanging the whole way on excellent rock. Very cool steep huecos & jugs right by the road.

edit The cool steep huecoed route is called Broken Heart.

I know a little about the place, as I put these routes up (under the guidance of Vaino Kodas) as a teenager in the late nineties. They are all good climbs, albeit short. At the time, VK was abiding by a strict ground-up ethic, more or less to shut up another local legend, whose initials are HL. H was extraordinarily outspoken in regards to rap-bolting and the "cowards" who practiced it and in partly facetious retort Vaino would overexaggerate H's ideal of a perfect first ascent whenever possible. The underworld was found during the height of this phenomena and thusly I was tasked with the top-down installation of the bolts and largely, the fa of these routes. The "crown jewel" of this motley lump of lines is Valujet, which VK soloed for its first ascent, not wanting to miss an opportunity to snag a good FA while not wanting to clip tainted bolts, either. The routes themselves may be inconsequential, but this was the best time of my life, which for me, makes this the finest crag on earth.

The steep, roadside climb you are talking about is surely Helix, which I put up in a successful attempt to impress a girl. There should be a plaque made with VK's bulldog that reflects this laying at the base. Send me a message for further info about the area, many obscurities exist.

Is Vaino Kodas the son of Wally Kodas, also a good climber, who taught math at San Diego State?

No. Vainos has to be in his 50s now. He has a brother, Toivo but I don't remember their father's name. He also had an Estonian name and only had one arm. We spent a week with all 3 of them in Tuolumne one year and their dad was the firewood king! He could saw better with one arm then the rest of us with two.
