My climbing partner just got me a cut-to-fit section of 5" thick foam for the bed platform in my van. She lives in downtown LA and got it from on the fabric boutiques on 8th St. Haven't had the chance to use it yet, but I'm psyched. I'll post up some pics when I have them.

Easy. A pair of the angled-hinge metolius crash pads provide many benefits: Nothing to inflate/puncture (mine are over ten years old and still going strong); multi-purpose (assuming you boulder with pads, play with kids, stretch, or snuggle by the campfire); fit perfectly in the bed of a pickup (6'x4') but don't eat up too much overhead space in the camper shell (mine are about 3" thick, but I think the newer ones are 4"); perfect for two; full sized bedding fits nicely; covers are washable (with a little hassle) so you can remove food/pet/party stains after a summer of sleaze; moderately firm when new, and you can always replace the thinner top sheet of foam to restore stiffness to "old softy" - or you can take off the shoulder straps and use the softer back side; they stack/store/strap on top easily; and most importantly, they allow you to set up camp without using another GOD-FORESAKEN BABY-WAKING BUZZ-KILLING LOUD-AS-F@CK AIR MATTRESS INFLATOR!

I have an 8ft by 3ft carpet remnant that I use for my ground cover when car camping What I call car campig is also known by some as dirt-bagging.
The carpet is great, you roll it out, it stays flat, it's soft, you can stand on the edge of it with no shoes. And it was basically free.
If I could get a flying carpet I would just ditch the car altogether.

We use Paco pads (www.jpwinc.com); I can't imagine anything that better combines durability, packability and comfort.

A custom made 4” foam futon that folds into thirds. Does take up a lot of space,
but that ain’t an issue in an F150. I do have my eye on that new one from Therma-Rest
because then I could put even more useless crap in the truck.

Exped Mega Mat
Pricy but is more comfortable than most real beds.
Had ours for 3 years and no problems.

Car camping?
Hell, I haven't gone without a folding cot for years. If it rains I just throw a canvas tarp over it. Keeps you off the wet or rough ground.
They make ones now with a little cheat lever that makes them much easier to set up.

small tarp on the ground and a tri-fold mat. I like the vinyl covered mats for easier cleaning.

Every self inflating foam + air pad I have had Failed, and are not fixable,
except the Thermarests.
The glue and seals on All of the other ones Fails.
REI for example now has the one year guarantee.
When the glue fails after 3-5 years, you get to buy a new one.
Memory Foam is awesome, if you have room for it.
