After watching the film...
Visit Idyllwild and stop in at the Hub Cyclery, one store up the street from Nomads. Say hi to the owners Brendan and Mary Collier. Mary is featured in the film and holds the honor of being the first women to complete the race.
Then buy something and then ...
go climbing

That looks pretty radical. Can't imagine doing that ride as a race... Will have to check this out.
Some friends of friends did this ride (not racing) a few years ago. Only they rode the entire great divide - from Alaska to the tip of Argentina.

Kinda makes you wanna go out and ride a bike for a couple of weeks and eat pork rinds from convenience stores in moderately depressed backwater towns.

Banff to Antelope Wells in under two weeks. 190,000' of climbing. Badass.

2 wheeled self propelled touring(in all of the forms/styles/endeavors) is pretty durned coo! TFPU y'all! Now I have some youtube distractions for the evening! That tour divide time this year is fairly mind blowing.
I work catty-corner from Adventure Cycling's HQ and always ponder the visiting tourist's rigs when going to lunch/coffee. The occasional Divide tourist and other dirt touring folks have some pretty cool bikes and bag set-ups...looks fun to not race it :)
What and where will these folks tour next?
OT
Speaking of different strokes, I also see a number of 2/4 stroke dirt bike touring folks stopping through town on various ID/MT/WY trail tours. There are a lot of timber roads and trails still open to the moto.

Cool town you live in, Cragar. Have you toured the ACA digs? Lots of cool and historic stuff in there.
I think most have no idea how synonymous ACA and GDMBR are. The chief architect of the GD route is Mac McCoy, media director for ACA since the Bikecenennial days. He is on the route in NM as I type, probably ferreting out new variations closer the the actual divide.
Cheers...
PS: Almost all of the GD is open to motos. That looks like one hell of a lot of fun.
Hey Mike-
I have, years ago and they had an amazing display of touring bikes. About 10 years ago ACA did some basement cleaning and a couple of those bikes ended up at local bike shops but most went the way of eBay. They still have a bunch of bikes and pics posted about. Yeah, that is pretty cool about McCoy, don't know him but have heard his name.
Yeah the divide route is primarily roads so motos are a go for the most part and a dual sport would be perfect. Bagged up dirt biking focusing on single track would be a super hoot! I have run into folks doing that in the Stanley/Salmon/Lemhi areas
