Char found her husband's body last night. Cause of death yet to be determined.
Baker had a remarkably impressive roster of first ascents. He was always a friend to me and I will miss him.

This is Mike Baker's sister. It was such a shock that Mike died so unexpectedly. Yes he, spent time in New Mexico before moving to Colorado and finally to the St. George area. I would love to hear any stories/experiences anyone has had climbing with my brother.

This is very sad news. I knew Mike when he worked at the shop in Los Alamos, and followed his career through his Colorado stint after which I lost track of him. We only shared a rope a few times but I have many fond memories.

To MikesSister,
you have my deepest condolences.
Mike and I had been acquainted for a number of years now, first through correspondence that he initiated while in Colorado. I was more and more impressed with him as I learned of his massive body of work as a climber and was most intrigued by the numerous desert solos of the highest caliber.
We also had numerous mutual friends including perhaps the most formidable desert duo ever to tread sandstone, Kyle Copeland and Charlie Fowler.
On one of Charlie's visits here three years ago we stopped by Hurst to say hi to Mike and try to talk him into roping up, but as on a half dozen other times that I tried he put it off until an improvement in his back problems, something I know too well.
When Patrick Hayes was shooting photos for my R&I interview Mike and Char came over and played some pool and checked out the lizards, but the photos that included them got cut. It seemed that unless the photos had guns the editor didn't like them. Too bad. I know Mike could have complied. In fact, if it helps at all, I hope that I can make a generous offer to his estate for one of his pieces. I don't have anything in mind, but it would be nice to carry one that belonged to a friend.

I can think of few frienships that I regret not working on further with equal sorrow.

Mike was a extremely friendly and giving person. I met Mike when he works at the shop in LA, NM. We hit it off pretty quickly and became good friends. I moved to Carbondale,CO and Mike was looking to leave NM. I hooked him up with a contact and he got a job managing a shop in Aspen and moved there with Leslie.

I moved again (Restuarant business)and Mike stay in the area for while longer.

As time went on we loss contact with each but I still felt he was a good friend and knew what he was up to (desert climbing) as he (more than likely) knew what I was doing.

I am glad he got to do his thing in the Desert of the SW.

He was a wonderful man and extremely kind person. Someone you were very proud to call a friend and have in your life.

In my mind eye I can still see Mike. Long straight hair and moustache, slender built and a smirking happy smile.

When a person like Mike leave us...we all lose something. I am sorry for your loss.

Hi Folks,

I knew Mike when he worked at Strings 'n Spokes in Los Alamos. I was a freight clerk, he was doing sales. We started climbing together, with a few other folks..we would all go down to the "Y" in Los Alamos to check out the cool new climbing gear the store started carrying. I had no idea he caught the climbing bug so hard. I heard from my friend Cam Burns that he passed away and I couldn't believe it.. Here is a drawing I did of him, circa about 1982, up in the Jemez mountains. RIP buddy.

I worked at Sport One in Albuquerque, use to be called Strings and Spokes. Met Mike several times in the Los Alamos store before working for him and Jeff. I just found out about him today. My heart is sad because he was my favorite up at the Los Alamos store. I admired Mike very much and enjoyed his love for the outdoors. Good memories my friend. Paul Wheeler

Sorry, he corresponded with me as Mike, so I assumed.

I ended up buying 3 of his guns.
