The last time the Yanks tried to invade Canada, didn't we cross the border and burn down the White House ?

1812 anybody ???

Some of my best friends are Canadian and whenever they are feeling uppity they tend to throw the war of 1812 comeback pretty fast. But since Canada did not exist as a nation in 1812 and no "Canadians" fought in that war it comes across as kind of a desperate sign of insecurity. It was the British regular army that fought in that war, our 51st state didn't become a nation until 1867.

The war of 1812 was a pretty significant event for the US because it was a response to constant harassment by the British who were thinking the USA was just a passing fad and they'd be moving back in soon enough.

The US at the time barely had a military in comparison, so the British were having their way by commandeering American cargo ships and running roughshod over American sovereignty. Hence the "Don't tread on me" war cry. Even though the US lost to the British, it proved the young American nation was here to stay and would continue to proactively take up arms against larger forces to protectís its interests.

Yes, the British won, but in the grand scheme of their military history, it is barely a footnote yet somehow modern Canadians have interpreted the war of 1812 to mean that Canada, as a nation, kicked the US military's ass, which is pretty funny when you look at the historical facts :)

And there ya go goat, goin' all goaty on me. Whiff sniff sniff.

While we had yet to have Sir John A party the Canadas ( upper & lower ) into existence in Charlottetown as "Canada" and most of western Canada was terra nullis unless your family was already living there, and "officially" it was the British vs the US, we were still known as the Canadas and it was those living there plus the first nations ( most of 'em ) against You Guys.

IN looking at maps from that time, the US had a finite border with the North and the UK had "control" over that which was there. So while you were standing on the moon and not seeing "Canada" , we , as a people , were here and .............we kicked your butts.

The Canadian military certainly saw it as a Canadian war. They were sportin' little pins on their lapels in honour of the bicentenary 2 years ago.

:-D

Oh, oh.....

the goat is backing up, horns lowered.

And there's Mel Hurtig - Book publisher, social activist, co-founder of the National Party (now sadly defunct) and all-round credit to the human race.

climbski2 - you are, of course, joking. So, who is your choice for a most notable Canadian?

Ted Cruz. Soon to run for US President. Canadian Manchurian candidate who shut down the US government last year.

climbski2: We tend to put arseholes like Ted Cruz in our Hall of Shame. You guys are welcome to keep that creepy slime bag in the U.S. Or pour salt on him.
