maybe only rich people should care about the debt. after all, it's their debt. we the serfs are only capable of scraping along now that our "professinal jobs" are really little more than the equivalent of blue collar wages of yore.

if the rich borrowed trillions to buy crap and tank our economy, i can go work in some other country. some of us live by our own intelligence and by the work of our own hands & minds still.

so we owe 16 trillion. lol. to whom?

even if you paint me some graph of who we owe it to, it's still an abstraction. those numbers just aren't real to me. and i don't feel responsible for them.

Government Shutdown Fitch puts US AAA rating on rating watch negative
Published: Tuesday, 15 Oct 2013 | 4:46 PM
http://www.cnbc.com/id/101093033

Fitch has put the U.S. credit rating on negative watch, reports CNBC's Dominic Chu.Fitch Ratings put the US government's "AAA" credit rating on 'rating watch negative' Tuesday, saying that the standstill on the U.S. debt ceiling negotiations risks undermining the effectiveness of the country's government and political institutions.

U.S. stock index futures fell.

"Although Fitch continues to believe that the debt ceiling will be raised soon, the political brinkmanship and reduced financing flexibility could increase the risk of a U.S. default," the rating agency wrote in a statement.

S&P 500 futures fell 9.6 points while Dow Jones industrial average futures sank 60 points and Nasdaq 100 futures fell 7.5 points.

A Treasury Department spokesperson said the Fitch move reflected an urgent need for Congress to act on the debt ceiling.

Earlier today Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid lashed out at House Republicans, shortly after the collapse of a rival GOP proposal.

He warned at the time that the U.S. credit ratings could be downgraded as soon as Tuesday night.

“The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure,”

Well I agreed with the Senator then and I agree with the President's quote now, there is a failure in leadership and all you guys do is whine about the other half of the party.

Gallup today reports 50% of Americans want the ACA repealed or scaled back compared with 38% who want it kept as law or expanded.

I'd be for default but the reprobates in charge now wouldnt know how to deal with it in a manner that would minimize damage over the long haul.

Interesting comment above...why should you be concerned over the fate of the dollar if you have none?

LOL, you do know that a sizeable number of those who want the law repealed are pissed at it because it doesn't go far enough?

“The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure,”

Yep those facts are a bit tough some time. Thanks to both group of reprobates.

You guys do know that quote is from Mr. Obama? The guy who now decides leadership means not negotiating, oh yea but he bears no responsibility, what is it still bush’s fault? Get a grip, your cute and funny.

And what did he do when he lost that vote? He acted like an adult accepted the process.

But the Repubs, losing vote after vote, and not being able to enact their will, instead try to destroy the country....their actual goal.

So Nohea,

do you even understand that "raising the debt ceiling" does NOT mean more spending?

do you understand that all it means is that the treasury is ordered to actually pay for the
spending that your House Republicans voted on and passed into law?

that is not negotiable, it has to be done or we default

Exercise for you to better understand this:

Can I burn OUR house down?

NO!

Can I burn the second floor of OUR house down?

NO!

"you are not negotiating"

get it yet?

If this is a good faith negotiation, then what have republicans offered to give up in return for concessions by democrats?

Gentlemen, I have a solid understanding of the debt ceiling. I see both parties as a bunch of reprobates and you guys are getting played.

The part of the theatrics that shows no leadership is 1) his quote and 2) his no negotiating strategy. Yet as I occasionally swing by this thread, I am amazed at your dedication to this President. There is nothing he could do wrong in your eyes and thankfully the nation does not have such blind faith.

EDIT: and can we be accurate, the government is NOT shut down, its 83% open and thats too much if you ask me.

And the question below asks is in good faith? I do not belive these reprobates ever negotiate in good faith

2) his no negotiating strategy

Again, I ask you, if this is a good faith negotiation, what are the Republicans prepared to offer as concessions to the Democrats?
