I unskewed today's job numbers and found that if our economy wasn't shackled by the job killing chains of Obumblecare we'd have added 6 million jobs last month.

BASE104 you forgot to mention the part of Greenspan's book (or at least book tour) where he openly admits that he was wrong about the ability of markets to correct themselves and to prevent their own excesses. Oops.

Some interesting polling of likely Republican primary voters coming out of North Carolina:

interesting comments on atlas shrugged Base, especially considering the context of reading it in your youth. I read it a couple of years ago ( by total chance, finding it in a fire pit!). Even at fifty the heroism of it all can be quite compelling but holy hell does she blow it with the complete lack of subtlety or humour! What a miserable c#&% she must have been!

What I found curious was the total lack of certain components of critical human virtues in the protagonists, or how terribly misunderstood those virtues are. Humility is the most obvious and I think it is the most telling character flaw of the right wing authoritarian. For the RWA, true humility - the awareness of ones own limits - is considered not virtuous, rather an error of character that restrains and mutes a persons potential. It is weak and cowardly. They think to be humble is to be humiliated.

Empathy, another vice is also notably lacking but what can you expect when it is always assumed that you get what you deserve and you take what you can get. Once again, any pre tense of empathy or other dross sentimentality of affection is reserved for the tribe, and that don't seem to include the bottom feeders much.

Of course Rand knew at least intuitively that your protagonist won't go far with most of the readership if they are unabashed fascists willing to crush skulls to build their railway so they are given the pre tense of humility in how they fawn and swoon all over each other in how more steely resolved the other fascist is.

Then there is the rest of the story that may as well have been written by Dr Suess on a month long coke binge, while hanging out with some Mexican drug barons!

A most tedious pile of English words and I mean tedious. It just drags on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on.

And that's just the first chapter.

My god what an awful book.

I don't think the lack of humility thing can be emphasized enough. aside from the obvious narcissistic imperative such an attitude demands, It should be obvious that cognitive dissonance would also be endlessly present. I mean who the hell doesn't have limits? But if the idea of limits is repulsive, then you are repulsive. The RWA personality is constantly disgusted by their own weakness, especially their latent and barely repressed homosexuality ...but that is another subject for another time perhaps!

Anyhoo... where were we? Oh yes can you imagine how torturous on the brain it must be to be denying such obvious realities? When you build your reality on myth ( rather than myth on reality) this is the monkey on your back. Constantly attempting and failing to rationalize your ideology by denying reality. No wonder they like to flail themselves and go to confessional. The only option is to soil yourself, wash, repeat.

I wonder if Chuff has finally met Robby Ford at the Betty ford cetacean rehab centre?

Incidentally, the real gods and goddesses of the ideal - the atlas shrugged fascists - have largely resolved this little problem by turning "soiling" into "cleaning".

As in "Ethnic Cleansing"

To add to your descriptions Bruce
We must also note the lack of self reflection and repentance

I have never, never, never ever witnessed a right winger apologize for being wrong or take a look back and see what crap they are saying after they have been shown to be 100% Wrong.

They just wave their hands over the past and give some lame response to divert their past regressions and leave it at that.

Most liberals apologize when they release that they were wrong about something, and of course change their opinions when they have found out that their opinion was wrong.

Why hold on to something that is categorically false?
stupidity and authoritarianism will allow you to believe anything no matter how wrong.

“Nearly all of these successful folks have made it in the business world by sticking with the free market ideal of survival of the fittest over everything else. They believe in giving no quarter, and consequently they are antiunion, pro-death penalty, and pro-war- that is, until they actually feel the war's cost in their own wallets and a big voice coming out of the sky says: You could grab more money if we did not have this war to pay for! This is America, where greed is christened "drive" and is deemed a virtue. ”

http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/2014/0503/Death-threats-stop-gun-store-from-selling-smart-gun.-Why

There's a european made "smartgun" that only fires if a special watch is in close proximity ensuring that the owner is actually the person firing the gun. A gun shop in Maryland decided to start selling them and was met with death threats to both him and his dog because, you know, freedom.

Nate Silver and Co. have some data that shows there is a not small enough disparity on racial views between white people based on party affiliation.

http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/are-white-republicans-more-racist-than-white-democrats/

(Graphs based on each question are in the article I'm not going to link all of them)

As of 2012, this index stood at 27 percent for white Republicans and 19 percent for white Democrats. So there’s a partisan gap, although not as large of one as some political commentators might assert. There are white racists in both parties. By most questions, they represent a minority of white voters in both parties. They probably represent a slightly larger minority of white Republicans than white Democrats.

Fortunately, the expression of racism by whites toward blacks has decreased over time, and for Americans in both parties — at least, according to this survey. In 1990, the index of negative racial attitudes stood at 40 percent for white Democrats and 41 percent for white Republicans.

There hasn’t been much of an overall increase or decrease in the index since Obama took office. On average, between the 2004 and 2006 editions of the surveys — the last two before Obama was either a president or a candidate — the index of negative racial attitudes stood at 22 percent for white Democrats and 26 percent for white Republicans. Those values are within the margin of error for those in the 2010 and 2012 surveys.

If there’s a discouraging trend, it’s not so much that negative racial attitudes toward blacks have increased in these polls, but that they’ve failed to decrease under Obama, as they did so clearly for most of the past three decades.

US Department of Justice’s “Operation Choke Point” asks banks to identify customers who may be breaking the law or simply doing something government officials don’t like. Banks are then told they must “choke off” those customers’ access to financial services, shutting down their accounts. The secretive operation began in 2013.

classic liberal self-deception: "[Obama] is one of the brightest men ever to occupy the office, and yet his learning curve has been among the flattest."

pls, libs, provide ONE piece of objective evidence that barry is "one of the brightest men" to serve as president...his college records are sealed; he published nothing as president of the harvard review; he left barrycare to nancy and harry for a complete disaster; his foreign policy is chaotic and, therefore, crumbling around him

just one example in a field that, in the modern era at least, sets a pretty low bar
