All of that is ancient history. I'm on permanent social security disability now. Thought I was going back to work this year, but then some old issues flared up again and now I am once again doing the back and forth thing with the doctor.

50 Signs You Watch Too Much Fox News
http://www.addictinginfo.org/2014/01/27/50-signs-watch-much-fox-news/

Talking to people who religiously watch Fox News is better than space travel. You get to see what life is like on another planet without the risk of explosive decompression. But if you’re a Fox News devotee and insist that the rest of the world is crazy, this list is for you. Please, get help.

You might be watching too much Fox News if:

1. You are OUTRAGED at how Obama has shredded the Constitution but can’t name any rights you’ve lost since January 20, 2009.

2. You think record breaking cold weather in the middle of winter disproves “Global Warming.”

3. You think record breaking cold weather in the middle of winter disproves “Global Warming” but record breaking heat waves in the summer are just a fluke.

4. You hate Obama for the almost 1700 American lives lost in Afghanistan under his watch but have no idea how many died in Iraq before he took office (Hint: more than 4000).

5. You call Afghanistan “Obama’s War” but ignore the entire first eight years of it.

6. You think there’s no way Chris Christie knew about the scandal unfolding in his own office but Obama clearly knew what a small IRS office in Cincinnati was up to.

7. You think 4 Americans dying in Benghazi is “the worst tragedy since 9/11.“

8. You denounce Bill Clinton as an adulterer but give a pass to David Vitter and Mark Sanford because they apologized.

9. You are both convinced Obama is a secret Muslim and still go into a frenzy when someone mention Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

10. You really do think Obama is a secret Muslim terrorist that drinks beer, eats pork, attended church for years (ARRRGH! Rev. Jeremiah Wright!), had his daughters baptized, had bin Laden killed and has had more terrorist leaders assassinated than every president before him combined.

11. You think bin Laden was responsible for 9/11 because he ordered the attack but Obama gets no credit for bin Laden’s death because he only ordered the attack.

12. You swear that Obama is coming for your guns.

13. You’ve been swearing that Obama is coming for your guns since before he was elected.

14. You swear that Obama has actually reduced your right to own guns but you can’t explain how.

15. You have ever used the phrase: Obama’s Katrina to describe something that was not the bungled response to a major natural disaster.

16. You’re positive Obama isn’t a true Christian but then got mad he had too many Christmas trees (no, seriously, that was a thing).

17. You think Muslims are terrorists and religious fanatics but think protecting gay kids from bullies is an attack on your religious beliefs.

18. You constantly complain the liberal media takes things out of context but you’re deeply offended that Obama said “You didn’t build that.”

19. You think that ACORN stole the 2008 election. Maybe the 2012 one as well.

20. You think “voter fraud” is an actual problem but can’t explain how cutting early voting stops it.

21. In 2009, cutting the $1.4 trillion deficit in half was the most important thing in the world but in 2014, you could care less about how much the deficit was cut (Hint: in half).

22. You hate Obama for not having served a day in the military but voted for Mitt Romney.

23. You think Obama is the laziest president ever for taking so many vacation days but “forget” that it’s less than a third of his predecessor.
23a. Never mind how many days he took, the president shouldn’t take vacations during a time of crisis!
23b. Never mind that Bush took vacations during two wars and a recession! Obama is spending tax payer money to loaf about!
23c. I said WHO CARES that Bush took more than three times as much vacation time? It only counts when the black guy takes a vacation!

24. You think Obama embarrassed America by bowing to other heads of state but forgot about this:

Bush_Prince_Abdullah_kiss_hold_hands

25. You think Obama is terrible for the economy while the stock market continues to hit all time highs.

26. You think the stock market hitting all times highs doesn’t mean the economy is improving but you still believe in Trickle Down Economics.

27. You claim you don’t believe in Trickle Down Economics but insist that increasing taxes on the rich will hurt the economy.

28. You’re outraged OUTRAGED at Obama for not unilaterally launching a full scale war on Iran but call him a warmonger for joining an international coalition to stop a massacre in Libya.

29. You think Obama is “dumb.”

30. You really think a Harvard graduate is “dumb.”

31. You really seriously think a Harvard graduate and a former president of the Harvard Law Review is “dumb.”

32. You think Obama hates white people which would include his white mother and the white grandparents that raised him to be President of the United States.

33. You think Obama is a criminal mastermind that has broken dozens of laws involving thousands of government workers but no one can actually prove anything.

34. You think Obama is an absolute idiot who has broken dozens of laws involving thousands of government workers but no one can actually prove anything.

35. You think Climate Change is a vast liberal conspiracy to destroy Capitalism.

36. You claim evolution is a liberal hoax but still take your kids of their yearly flu shot.

37. You claim science is just a religion but do not think twice about boarding an airplane.

38. You think the private sector can completely replace government investments but you’re OUTRAGED Obama ended the Space Shuttle program.

39. You think using a teleprompter means you are stupid. But only if you happen to be the president. It’s OK for everyone else.

40. You think being asked to drink an extra glass of water a day is tyranny.

41. You think being asked to do more community service is tyranny.

42. You think being asked to help the poor get health insurance is tyranny.

43. You think being asked to let women choose to use birth control is tyranny.

44. You think being asked to respect other religions is tyranny.

45. You think being asked to leave homosexuals alone is tyranny.

46. You think being publicly shamed for your racism is tyranny.

47. You think not allowing criminals and the mentally ill to buy guns is tyranny.

48. You think allowing everyone to vote is tyranny.

49. You think Obama exercising his constitutional authorities is tyranny.

50. You grew up in America and think you actually understand what real tyranny is.

I started working a regular job when I was 14. Farm work. Not my families farm. Before that I mowed lawns and raked leaves in the fall. By the time I was 16 I was working full-time. By the time I was 19 I had put 10,000 dollars in the bank. That was when minimum wage was $1.35 an hour. I also got nearly straight A's in school. I paid my own way through University. I paid for 3 years, but then flunked because I got screwed up with drugs and alcohol. Nobody to blame for that but myself. I did drugs heavily for 6 years. Mostly marijuana, alcohol, cocaine, and psychedelics. Thankfully I never got hooked on Heroin. Then I quit, cleaned myself up, got a job cleaning carpets and worked 70 hours a week to be able to buy a home and get my own business. Was on the verge of buying my own cleaning franchise in Spokane Washington when I hurt my back on the job. I worked for 3 more years with a messed up back and then started having intestinal trouble. I went from 185 pounds down to 117 pounds, ( I swam on the university team at 176 pounds. ) At 185 pounds I was very fit. I lifted weights and surfed a lot. Plus many other sports. Hadn't found climbing yet. Eventually the docs decided that I had crohn's disease. They wanted to remove my colon. ( that is a long story in and of itself. I wouldn't let them and went out on my own. I studied everything that I could and put myself on a very strict diet. No wheat, corn, sugar, caffeine, red meat, processed food, fried foods, or alcohol. After another 3 years I finally started gaining weight. The docs had given me one year to live, if I didn't have the surgery. . I have since found a doctor who believes these kinds of intestinal issues could be related to viruses. But that is a whole other issue. All through this my back was still a mess. My health insurance had run out. I had lost my job and used the money that I had saved to buy a business, plus selling my house, to live on. I was also dealing with a lifetime of issues with depression, which was why I had the drug problem.

Eventually I moved to Yosemite and went to work for the concession so that I could have a job and get health insurance. It was the only job that I could get since I hadn't worked in 3 years and my main experience was carpet cleaning. With a bad back I couldn't do that anymore. So I cleaned rooms, worked at badger, eventually became a manager. But my back was still troubling me and I had issues with depression. Then a pilonidal cyst on my tailbone required 4 surgeries and would not heal and was constantly getting infected, leading to a bone infection, and sepsis, which nearly killed me. I also had trouble with blood clots, two of which nearly killed me. I worked this entire time, though I went back to cleaning rooms as I could not handle the management job anymore. 9 blood clots, 2 of which I went to the hospital for, one mild stroke, one mild heart attack and we won't even discuss the issues with depression which one med I was on weakened my achilles tendons and I tore it. The docs didn't want to do surgery because of the blood clots, so that never healed properly.

Until 7 years ago I worked and had supposedly good insurance.

I also did tons of volunteer work. Working with gang kids in Southern California and helping build an orphanage in Mexico. ( 14 months doing that while I cleaned up from the drugs ) Plus leading kids on backpacking trips and working in a soup kitchen. I worked hard and I played hard.

Silver spoon in my mouth Coz? I don't think so.

Thanks Bob and Apogee. Some of it was my own damn fault. I was smart, but let drugs mess me up.

Dealing an entire lifetime with our health system with the problems I have had has been something I would not wish on my worst enemy. Its one thing if you are healthy and strong and do something like injure an ankle. There are great doctors in this country and if you are mostly healthy you can navigate the insurance system, but once you have any major illness, or chronic illness, then it can quickly become a nightmare. I was denied healthcare many times by my insurance companies. The loopholes I had to jump through, sometimes while being very sick, were insane.

One blood clot med I paid for was 10 grand for one dose. In Canada that same drug was under a thousand dollars retail. That was while I was in the emergency room with a blood clot in my lungs which the doctors later said was one of the biggest blood clots they had ever seen. I was advised that I might die, or have a stroke and be paralyzed if I didn't' take this medicine and insurance would not cover it and then handed a form to sign saying that I would pay for it, not knowing that it cost 10 grand. At the time I could barely breath and was turning blue.

Fun times man..

I hope you're doing well John.

We have to stand in line for some things but something like that would triage you to the front of the line, no questions.

With that said, there is indeed a 2 tiered system in Canada regardless of conservative bumf.

I've paid with money beyond what I am taxed for health care for an MRI. At the time I could afford it and in doing so,freed up my place in line for someone else who didn't have that luxury.

Imagine that, free to chose but covered, regardless. As for the lower Canadian price for your blood clot medicine, the devil is in the details. It was a conservative government that made a bargain with the pharmaceutical companies, in which they would enjoy longer patent protection in return for capping the price of their name brand drugs. Win-win when 2 sides compromise.

For profit on the well being of your citizens sucks.

I don't understand that, Bob. Are you saying we should make profits only on unimportant things? If people have a tendency to pursue what they perceive to be in their self-interest, will we have more or less services to help our wellbeing if we amputate profit from those services?

I hate to repeat this (vamp might be more accurate), but the fundamental problem with current American health care is that the patient and care provider are bit players in the financial equation.

On a different note, I, too, want to offer my support, John M. I actually got to meet John a few years ago, when John was kind enough to drive down to Fresno to hear one of our concerts, but even before then, we'd commiserated about mental health issues. We may seem to disagree more than we agree, but you're a good man, John, and the fact that a wound may be partially self-inflicted doesn't mean it doesn't hurt, or doesn't merit others' empathy. You certainly have mine.

In the middle, John Galted (Rand pun!)

If people have a tendency to pursue what they perceive to be in their self-interest, will we have more or less services to help our wellbeing if we amputate profit from those services?

By your logic Pfizer is a highly motivated, productive healthcare machine and Massachusetts General Hospital is an unmotivated, slothful welfare queen leeching off the teet of big government. If you read the Dartmouth Atlas, a periodical analysis of healthcare quality data, there is actually a giant pile of evidence that profit motivated physicians (proceduralists such as cardiac interventionalists or vascular surgeons) in an "all things being equal" situation generally make choices that are better for themselves and not their patients. This is part of why there is a move against fee for service medicine and towards salaried physicians. It turns out that healthcare professionals do a better job because they are healthcare professionals and not because there is a huge pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

I should add that at my hospital, if you are very sick with a new cancer diagnosis we will have chemotherapy flowing through you before we even think of asking if you have health insurance. Contrast that with MD Anderson (for profit) who is happy to make you sit in the lobby until you are able to front $50,000 cash to even be seen by a doctor for a consultation. I'm sure Ayn Rand giggles in her grave every time that happens.
