I was just listening to the radio this am about those "enslaved in their jobs" and how the ACA will FREE THEM of that..???? HUH?

This isn't complicated Ron, please try to follow along:

Example A: Bob has a job that he hates, because it is well below his abilities. He has a great idea for a new product, but his company will not entertain it. He'd rather start his own company, but he has 3 kids and his wife works part time with no benefits. Bob cannot take the risk of starting his own company because it is the only place he could get reasonably affordable (though still expensive) health insurance. Bob is "enslaved" in his job.

ACA allows Bob to buy a policy at similar rates on the open market, a policy that is portable, and not tied to his job. Bob can therefore take the risk without putting his children's health at risk

Example B: Mona is 60, and has been doing full time housekeeping work at the hotel for 30 years. But age is catching up with her. Medicare isn't available to her for another 5 years, but she can barely get through a full work week due to the physical naure of the job, up and down stairs, carrying vaccuum cleaners and things. She would love to switch to part-time, but would lose her health benefits if she works less than 32hrs/week. So she has no choice. Meanwhile, Rosa is 22 and desperately needs a job. No jobs are available in the area, but is Mona and other older folks cut back on hours, now there is work for Rosa.

ACA allows Mona to go to part time, without losing access to health insurance.

It isn't about able bodied people who want to lay on the couch and suck govt tit. Try to use your limited brain power and think some of these things through before spouting off your usual hillbilly wisdom.

ElCap,, while that is TRUE for many,, it ISNT for many many others.

The unemployment rates supposedly dropped in spots across the country, but that IS DUE TO MANY AMERICANS leaving the job and job search markets. And seeing as how i live in the bullseye of all of this, i see it first hand.

Example: mechanic joe down the street just recently told me he said "screw it" and hasnt looked for a job , instead choosing to go on welfare, food stamps and have his medical issues covered 100%.. He said, why should i go to work and be penalized out the arse for something i cant afford when i can get if for NOTHING.. If you dont think this mind set isnt building daily, your mistaken..

Have you heard the word "demographics"?
Do you understand the concept of "age wave"?

We reached a high of labor participation rate in the last decade, likely to not been seen again for 20 years or so. That is mostly attributable to two things:

1. Women joined the workforce. This started in earnest in the mid/late 60s and eventually plateaued at a high level with a large % of women working outside the home.

2. The baby boomers, the largest generational cohort we've seen, entered their working years.

Now that largest cohort, the boomers, are retiring. So even if the economy were booming, participation rate would be declining as they leave the workforce. The last recession may have accelerated some them retiring. But decreases in assets (housing value, the largest chunk of most people's net worth) may have put retirement way further out for others. Which of those trends is dominant is something I'd like to see.

Just because you live amongst the lazy ass hoodrats doesn't mean your neighbor is representative of the population at large. There will be lazy fux, no matter what the laws happen to be, or what the political system.

Screwing the many because you are vindictive toward the few (your hoodrat friends) is idiotic beyond belief. Cut off your nose to spite your face territory.

Hmmmmm you forgot an item or two Elcap. How about the low level labor force of ILLEGALS now taking jobs away from Americans to the tune of 20 million or so. I myslef have been fighting this VERY ISSUE. I HAD a hot tip on a job, the guy NEEDING help,, but i DIDNT SPEAK fluent spanish and all his labor and foreman are mexican and dont speak english.

Kids here no longer can get summer jobs for landscaping and yard mowing. Teenage girls were turned down to work for McDonalds over the very same language issues. Any casual labor outfits here are also filled with mexican laborers.

So with that added onto the many businesses either cutting hours or employees to pay for the new and mandatory coverages by this aca deal leads to obvious conclusions about ramifications. THEN think of this,, that some politicians are calling for ILLEGALS to ALSO have ACA coverage.. GOOD LUCK!

Meanwhile NO TORT reform will not lower any medical cost out there. Just the opposite.

edit: Elcap,, i havent mentioned FRIEND in any description above. "hoodrats" paleeeeze.

MALPRACTICE A TINY PERCENTAGE OF HEALTH CARE COSTS

One of the principal myths surrounding medical malpractice is its effect on overall health care costs. Medical malpractice is actually a tiny percentage of health care costs, in part because medical malpractice claims are far less frequent than many people believe.
In 2004, the CBO calculated malpractice costs amounted to “less than 2 percent of overall health care spending. Thus, even a reduction of 25 percent to 30 percent in malpractice costs would lower health care costs by only about 0.4 percent to 0.5 percent, and the likely effect on health insurance premiums would be comparably small.” i http://www.justice.org/cps/rde/justice/hs.xsl/8686.htm

"Because of" should be in there somewhere Dirt.

The gawd awfull price of a visit or treatment is due to the ridiculous extreme we allowed to take place in Law suits against medicine.

I just had to make a 300.00 DEPOSIT for an upcoming appointment. Thats how had its become. AND the continuation of RESEARCH and development of medicines is also being thwarted now as the risk and coverage required make it prohibitive. Yep we priced OURSELVES into this corner. By allowing ridiculous settlements and awards from medical lawsuits.

edit:

While Nevada malpractice insurance rates are between middle to high in comparison with all other states, doctors of many types in Nevada--including general internists, pediatricians and general practice doctors--earn a higher average salary than doctors in any other state. In 2009, one of the highest rates of insurance in Nevada is for OB/GYNs, who may pay between $85,000 for malpractice liability insurance per year up to $142,000 per year for a premium plan by a prominent insurance company. Although the average annual salary for such doctors was around $180,000 in 2009, malpractice insurance can still be a huge financial burden.

So is it 2% or a different amount?

And if it is a different amount, please cite the study showing the math.
