Pat Toomey: Background Checks Died Because GOP Didn't Want To Help Obama

Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) revealed that some members of his party opposed expanding background checks for gun sales recently because they didn't want to "be seen helping the president."

Two weeks ago, only three Republican senators voted for the bipartisan background checks amendment sponsored by Toomey and Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), despite overwhelming popular support for such a measure.

"In the end it didnít pass because we're so politicized. There were some on my side who did not want to be seen helping the president do something he wanted to get done, just because the president wanted to do it,Ē Toomey admitted on Tuesday in an interview with Digital First Media editors in the offices of the Times Herald newspaper in Norristown, Pa.

The Times Herald noted that in "subsequent comments," Toomey "tried to walk that remark part-way back by noting he meant to say Republicans across the nation in general, not just those in the Senate."

Last week, Toomey placed more of the blame on the president himself, telling the Morning Call, "I would suggest the administration brought this on themselves. I think the president ran his re-election campaign in a divisive way. He divided Americans. He was using resentment of some Americans toward others to generate support for himself." (WTF?, it was Obama's fault for being black once again?)

Manchin has argued, however, that the National Rifle Association's decision to score the vote was the main reason the compromise amendment on background checks failed. Without it, he believed, 70 senators -- well above the 60-vote threshold needed for passage -- would have supported it. (well now we know the real reason)

Opponents also pushed a significant amount of misinformation before the vote, including the myth that the legislation would lead to a federal gun registry. In fact, the bill would have made the creation of such a registry a felony carrying a prison sentence of up to 15 years. (so the lies had a part in making people fear the bill)

Toomey was pessimistic on Tuesday about the prospects of gun legislation moving forward, saying it's "not likely to happen any time soon."

"The bill is available right now and Sen. (Majority leader Harry) Reid could bring it up for a vote at any time, but we need five people to change their minds," he said.

Sens. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.), Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) and other lawmakers who voted against the background checks legislation have seen drops in their poll numbers since opposing the legislation.

Toomey, on the other hand, has seen his poll numbers rise.

damn, it's hard being right all the time:

http://washingtonexaminer.com/landmark-study-shatters-liberal-health-care-claims/article/2528671?utm_source=Washington%20Examiner:%20Opinion%20Digest%20-%2005/02/2013&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Washington%20Examiner:%20Opinion%20Digest

in a nutshell:

"In 2008, Oregon expanded its Medicaid program, but because the state could not cover everybody, lawmakers opened up a lottery that randomly drew 30,000 names from a waiting list of almost 90,000 and allowed them to apply for the program. This created a unique opportunity for health researchers, ultimately allowing them to compare the health outcomes of 6,387 low-income adults who were able to enroll in the program with 5,842 who were not selected.

Contrary to liberal assumptions, researchers found that those who enrolled in Medicaid spent a lot more on medical care than those who werenít able to enroll, but didnít significantly improve their health outcomes."

o having MediCaid is supposed to automatically improve health?

What idiot makes that claim?

I don't know about idiots making that claim, but the claim forms an (often silent) assumption of arguments for more governmental aid in medical care.

That said, in my opinion, the study quoted misses the point, because the model liberals prefer -- single payer -- differs greatly from MediCaid.

That newspaper article quotes the conclusion, but not the results, which were:

We found no significant effect of Medicaid coverage on the prevalence or diagnosis of hypertension or high cholesterol levels or on the use of medication for these conditions. Medicaid coverage significantly increased the probability of a diagnosis of diabetes and the use of diabetes medication, but we observed no significant effect on average glycated hemoglobin levels or on the percentage of participants with levels of 6.5% or higher. Medicaid coverage decreased the probability of a positive screening for depression (−9.15 percentage points; 95% confidence interval, −16.70 to −1.60; P=0.02), increased the use of many preventive services, and nearly eliminated catastrophic out-of-pocket medical expenditures.

The claim of "no significant health benefits" was based on ONE SINGLE MEASURE OF ONE SINGLE DISEASE, a disease which would be irrelevant to the health of most in the study, totally undermining the "statistical significance" of the findings.

The bolded section is in my opinion the single most important reason for universal health insurance.

I'm not sure who's the bigger fool, you for believing it, or me for trying to point out how wrong you are?

Knot to quote Locker but some WUD say this is a GUD thing. The hypocrisy and double standard that you people uphold to support this President is astounding. Everything going on right now is in preparation for the 2014 elections. We shall see how that turns out. The Chicago mob persona emanating from the WH is disgusting.

Obama IS from Chicago before he became the so called president.

So called President means.

I have no clue who really is behind him.

He made a statement a while ago where he said as a human being I do it one way but as a Political person I have to do it another way.

There is a saying "Never trust a Politician"

Thus I do not trust him ......

Pure BS talking points
Obama isn't involved in Chicago Politics, nor anything else you right wingers delusionally say about Obama

The Right Winger Media is insane now.
Let's talk about that!
It's embarrassing that they can lie, misinform, take things out of context, mislead, demonize, promote fear and hate: and use propaganda like it is the SOP.

Has Evil come to America? I will have to say yes.

BENGHAZI -- the whistle blowers are getting loose.

Surprise surprise,, they all lied...

In fact there were several locations this weekend in Carson city where one could sign impeachment petitions for Obama for his part in this most obvious of cover ups since watergate.

The admin has done everything in its power to see that all survivors of Benghazi are silenced. Transparency of Obama is simply stunning..
