How did you get that felled tree off the stump? Looks sketchy.

In my experience old growth stands are the healthiest and most resistant to fire/bugs. In my opinion the beetle and overgrowth problems can't be fixed on any large scale.

Biden is a very impassioned speaker when he's on a roll...Ryan is a smart guy, but he rolls loose with the facts. Their strengths/weaknesses are apples/oranges...I could see it go either way.

Old growth THEMSELVES arent the problem in many areas. (discounting the redwoods ecosystems) . The problem is that in many westerns stands, they have reached the "zone of imminent mortality", and have crown competitions that stop reproduction of same species. Un natural occurrences then happen like white fir where they shouldnt be- taking up valuable soils and mositures while growing in a declining stand. Then once the stand becomes stressed due to these encroachments the old growth reacts to those stresses as well while no reproduction of that species happens due to the above.

As per you tree stump question, that was a perfect up hill- save the log- fall lol!
edit: Apogee Biden has had a foot in his mouth more than air.. I wouldnt be surprised if he were to come down with a "sudden illness" that precludes him from participation! THAT would be their best plan..

Libya, Iran, Iraq, Syria and the surrounding areas …………………….

Ron: First educate yourself, you should understand where and when the problems we now have in the ME started with:

“Operaion Ajax” CIA at the request of the Brits MI6 created a coup in Iran in the 50’s to replace a democratically elected Prime Minister leader with a corrupt leader all for oil. Brits did not like the nationalization of their oil APOC/AIOC now changed to British Petroleum or BP. Iranian CIA operatives pretending to be socialists and nationalists threatened Muslim leaders with "savage punishment if they opposed Mossadegh,[PM]" thereby giving the impression that Mossadegh was cracking down on dissent, and stirring anti-Mossadegh sentiments within the religious community. So now we replaced Mossadegh with The Shaw. That lasted for a number of years of corruption and brutality to his people and:

Now a new change: “Islamic Revolution” or current regime. Wonder why? Exploitation of resources is just one reason; murder and execution of Muslims that protested his [Shaw]regime. The US looked the other way plus helped in teaching torture like we always do in countries that we have interests in.

* The intelligence gap steadily widened, and Washington was caught by surprise when the Khomeini-inspired Islamist revolution occurred in February 1979.

* That takeover, according to Kinzer [ book written about the coup from declassified records] links the 51-year-old coup with recent and current terrorism.

* With their devotion to radical Islam and their eagerness to embrace even the most horrific kinds of violence, Iran's revolutionary leaders became heroes to fanatics in many countries. Among those who were inspired by their example were Afghans who founded the Taliban, led it to power in Kabul, and gave Osama bin-Laden the base from which he launched devastating terror attacks. It is not far-fetched to draw a line from Operation Ajax through the Shah's repressive regime and the Islamic Revolution to the fireballs that engulfed the World Trade Center in New York.

* This conclusion, however, requires too many historical jumps, exculpates several presidents who might have pressured the Shah to institute reforms, and overlooks conflicts between the Shia theocracy in Tehran and Sunni extremists in Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, and elsewhere.

*Source CIA.gov

* The tangible benefits the United States reaped from overthrowing Iran's elected government included a share of Iran's oil wealth[22] as well as resolute prevention of the possibility that the Iranian government might align itself with the Soviet Union, although the latter motivation produces controversy among historians. Washington continually supplied arms to the unpopular Shah, and the CIA-trained SAVAK, his repressive secret police force. The coup is widely believed to have significantly contributed to anti-American sentiment in Iran and the Middle East. The 1979 Iranian Revolution deposed the Shah and replaced the pro-Western royal dictatorship with the largely anti-Western Islamic Republic of Iran.[23]

* source “1953 Iranian coup d'état” Wikipedia

That Islamic revolution and the balance of power between Shia and Sunnis in Iran started in 1953 but were small until ‘79.

But it was American military intervention in Iraq in 2003 that did the most or made it worse.

It was the incompetence of President Bush who did not know, two months before the invasion of Iraq, that Muslims were divided into Sunni and Shia sects. Still clueless but they had to stand behind someone so the United States Government was pro-Sunni and anti-Shia. During the Iraq War, the United States feared that a Shiite-led, Iran-friendly Iraq could have major consequences for American national security. Plus the United States’ support of the Sunni monarchy during the Bahraini uprising is the latest in a long history of US support to keep the Shiites in check.

Have to remember Bin Laden's group was originally trained by the CIA; taught them how to use cell phones not the ones we see today but electronic aided to detonate bombs and use aluminum foil to cover them as well so to hide the signal. They also learned using IRA [Northern Ireland] techniques by using infra-red sensors as triggers, a technique that was used widely by in the early-to-mid 1990s.

It’s a specific Shia militia (Mahdi army) and a terrorist insurgency (al Qaeda, Baathists, and other ‘Salafists’) on the side of creating violence now all fighting for power in the region including Iraq, Libya Syria and Afghanistan.

Now comes Syria in a civil war and we “the US” as usual are still clueless who to help or give arms to.President Bashar Al-Assad's family is Alawite and Alawites [Shia] which is 13% of the population dominating the government of Syria and holding key military positions.

In Libya: regular guerrilla attacks by another Islamist militia Ansar al-Sharia, which is blamed by many for last month's killing of US ambassador Chris Stevens. The National Shield, Benghazi's Islamist brigades, forces from a pro-government militia alliance, Misratans, the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG) is another, then add Al Qaeda to the group. So you have all [that was just a few] groups fighting for power or to be included in the role on how to govern. Problem they now have is no foreign investment because of the chaos. A specially formed army unit, the National Mobile Force is trying to go after the terrorists but anti-militia protesters keep them from doing it.

In Afghanistan they have told us to leave many times and now we are getting out because of the same reason the Russians went in.OCCUPATION /CONTROL of their country. We lose, they win, and it’s that simple. They hate us: I wonder why? So look for al-Qaeda winning in these areas soon.

Iranian people like us who are now fighting because our sanctions are working and hopefully they will bring change. It is working in our favor but if we do Israel’s bombing first or Israel does it alone bets are off. If Romney gets in; he will bow down to Netanyahu and kiss his feet and will order the Pentagon to strike.

One thing you can say about the United States we have no clue on the rest of the world’s cultures, hell we only know/understand and speak one language. Plus killing, what we like to do best.

Obama has his hand out to Muslims [he is not one] [right-wing propaganda] Romney does not like them because he will not be able to convert them to Mormonism.

And if Romney gets in: your mask and you say you are prepared. Think you need a little more than that to survive: it gets in the skin, should consider covering it and your cloths with the proper gear. Then wait 48 hours till it’s safe to take them off properly.

Lost, Yes there is a long history of FAILED dealings in the ME. Your list proves that well. But playing that same ol game with them will do nothing but repeat history- which is why i call for the USA to get the hell out of there. Each and every attempt at installing a new govt ends up the same as well doesnt it?

lostinshanghai,

If you want to see the adverse effects of incompetent western intervention in the ME, you need to go back at least to the dismemberment of the Ottoman Empire after WWI. A Peace To End All Peace: The Fall Of The Ottoman Empire And The Creation Of The Modern Middle East by David Fromkin is an excellent account of events, although it sometimes taxed my power of memory, in that I needed to read large chunks at once. Otherwise, I couldn't keep track of all the names.

One thing that I see over and over again is the pitiful Western intelligence about, and understanding of, ME countries. I still remember my geography classes in seventh and ninth grade. They consisted of more material about Israel than the rest of the Middle East and North Africa put together. It's small wonder that we act with such ignorance.
