Of course there are the dead obvious greats.
Hendrix covering Dylan's All Along The Watchtower.
Hit me with a great if you like, but I dig obscurity and something that I can't hear on the radio everyday.
I'll throw down with Bang Bang, written by Sonny Bono, sung by Cher, 1966
Covered by the lovely Nancy Sinatra that same year.
Here's her version.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5Xl0Qry-hA
Here's a newer version from the lovely Ania Dabrowska.
I like her video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOGOMm2NkDg&feature=related
But my fave? Jack White and The Raconteurs!!
These guys do it SICK!

I know there's a few cool cover freeks out there. Bring it on Bishes!!

Martin Gore (of Depeche Mode) did a solo album of covers called Counterfeit. All of the tracks are good, but Julee Cruise "In My Other World" and Lennon / Ono "Oh My Love" are brilliant.

Oh, you want obscure? Can you handle obscure?
Actually, these guys impressed Leonard Bernstein so much that
"he invited the group to appear at one of his Young People's Concerts with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, where they performed their signature song "Brandenburg" which was based on the first movement of Bach's Fifth Brandenburg Concerto." (WIKI)
You gotta love these lyrics for "Gravedigger"

Mike Ness (of arguably the best punk band of all time, Social Distortion) does Bob Dylan's "Dont Think Twice"
Mike actually did a solo album called Under the Influence that are all covers of old country songs. His solo album Cheating at Solitaire is full of great originals and a few covers. He even got Bruce Springsteen to sing back up on a few tracks

Highly recommend checking out the album Re-Covers by Yat-Kha. Tuvan throat sing meets Led Zeppelin (When the Levee Breaks), Joy Division (Love Will Tear us Apart) and much more.
Other wild cover is Luther Wright and the Wrongs doing Pink Floyd's The Wall as country music.

One of my favorite "albumns" is all Leonard Cohen covers (Tower of Song). He's the ultimate song writer, and most of the musicians are better performers, so the end result is even better than the (great) originals. Highlights:
Tori Amos Famous Blue Raincoat
Don Henley Everybody Knows
Willie Nelson Bird on a Wire
One of my all time favorites though...

Back in the 80s we did a lot of quirky covers---Carpenters, "Brandy", "Edmund Fitzgerald", a "Goobers and Raisinets" jingle, etc. Here's "Spinning Wheel":
http://mervspiegel.com/media/mp3/MervSpiegelandthePenguinsSpinningWheel.mp3?link=1
Great covers I'll leave you to google: Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah", Eva Cassidy's ... well, everything, Husker Du's "Eight Miles High" and "Love is All Around (theme from Mary Tyler Moore)", Rufus Wainwright's "Across the Universe", Radio Birdman's "Aloha Steve and Dano (theme from Hawaii 5-0)", Randy Scruggs' "Both Sides Now", Ray Charles' "Georgia" and "America the Beautiful", The Who's "(Love is like a) Heatwave", The Animals "House of the Rising Sun", Fleetwood Mac's "Shake your Money-Maker",
Smashing Pumpkins' "Dancing in the Moonlight": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2OOtTBrxgE
And here's a pretty good Vlad Horowitz cover of an old Beethoven tune:

I love covers that go in a totally different direction, changing the mood, texture, or rhythm of the song. One of the best of those IMHO, is Crooked Fingers' cover of Prince's When You Were Mine. Still one of my favorite covers, up there with the Gin and Juice cover by The Gourds, Dynamite Hack's version of Boys In The Hood, and tons of Grateful Dead covers, of which my favorite is probably the Dead doing Merle Haggard's Sing Me Back Home.

the Benevento/Russo (as Bustle in Your Hedgerow) cover of Ace of Spades is pretty rowdy, but whole fifteen song set is an homage to the coverband.
the War Pigs opener is classic as are the Electric Funeral and Hand of Doom Sabbath covers, and the MJ Don't Stop Til You Get Enough is fun, not to mention Day Tripper, and, best of all: an extended groove on the psych-lounge Ween classic I Fell in Love Today. Also some Allman Bros and Grateful Dead in there, too. IN ONE SET!!!!!116667!

I think the first post had the strongest remake ever: Hendrix doing All Along The Watchtower. Just so good.
My other personal fave is The Clash's version of I Fought the Law. So much energy and drive, they make it their own.
This thread has devolved (like most do) into people just posting examples of remakes, rather than really strong ones. Good recent contributions from Ed though with Janis Joplin and Joe Cocker. True stylists both.

Personal music taste aside, what makes for a strong cover to you fat dad? Interesting question. I think what one considers good is based in large part upon what one likes. However, I think a good cover is one where the band doing the cover gives a strong new interpretation to a song, while still capturing some of the spirit of the original. I'm thinking of two examples of bad covers off the top of my head which maybe will illustrate my point.
First, there was a commemorative album of Ramones tunes done by lots of different bands and, oddly, I thought the only band that did a good job was Kiss (who I am just meh about). The song had good energy, had a Kiss flavor but was totally anti the vibe the Ramones gave off with the original. They seemed to get the song in other word, whereas all the other bands on the CD did not IMO.
Another current example: Xmas tunes. Everybody does their own version of this or that, and most of them suck. They're just rehashes that don't contribute anything. They aren't a positive addition to the original and the cover by itself is poor.

Yeah, Jimi late at night, all by himself in the recently constructed Electric Lady Studios, running the board as well as playing and singing, and giving a whole new flavor to Dylan.
I could listen to it every day.
In 1973 I got to tour the studio where history was made.
His death was so sad and so easily preventable. One can only wonder how much richer our culture could be had he lived.

Fat dad-
Yeah, hard to separate our own musical tastes from what we feel is a "strong cover".
There are artists that I love who's versions of songs I'm not that into.
As far as this thread going downhill, or however you put it, I guess that's accurate if we're talking about Jimi's All Along The Watchtower, one of THE iconic covers, pretty much synonymous with him and less the original songwriter.
Chris- Always loved Sublime's We're Only Gonna Die...
I guess when the original songwriter likes the cover more than their original, it could be considered "strong".

Gary Hoey, haven't heard his name in a long time. Back when I was playing in bands, mid/late 90s, I got to jam with him a little in a music store in Atlanta. He was doing some demo for a new model of Fender Strat later in the day.
It was embarassing, the guy was so far out of my league. He did give me some good tips for practicing though, stuff that I remember to this day. One being to play clean and really loud when you do practice drills and exercises, so mistakes stand out. The other being some specific exercises to get finger speed up.

edit: Hoobie! I thought that guy looked familiar - anyone remember the Hooters? Used to hear them on MMR out of Philly as a kid, had "Amore", the whole deal. Cool flashback.

And there are a bunch of them! Quite a tribute to the musical depth of the cover band that made these.
Edit: Still listening... this is like a doctoral thesis of musical and film school quality. One of the most remarkable creations I've seen in a long time.

Sometimes it's cool when a cover takes a song somewhere you never expected it to go.

This is likely put up already but I don't feel like looking through the whole thread.
if you put the YouTube tag in the search box you can generally find where and when it was posted, if it was....
the answer to your implied question: 7 times before yours,
http://www.supertopo.com/forumsearch.php?ftr=u9Dg-g7t2l4
(you'll find 9 hits, this post, your's and the previous posts)
after finding this, you can decide if it deserves another post (probably does in this case, although with some irony).

Marlow, both those videos are not playable in the US. A copyright problem.
This video contains content from Eagle Rock. It is not available in your country.

Fleetwood Mac covers Fleetwood Mac. Fans of Peter Green's version may find this lacking, but I like the way Fleetwood, McVie and Buckingham mesh together on this one. Buckingham had that ability to play and sing like he was on the verge of a psychotic meltdown and I think that works on this song.

MfM, thanks for the Blue Cheer. I used to hear that version most mornings on AM radio whenever my Mom drove me to school one year. Always a big favorite.

Does it count as a legitimate "cover" if a recording artist covers himself?
