He is looking at spinal surgery and needs to cover his copays. He would be most grateful for anything you can do.

Tami, Phil talks about his upcoming surgery on this thread. Spinal degeneration with lots of side affects that have given him trouble for a number of years, but it sounds like the surgery could really help him.

Thanks for responding guys. Philo probably would be reluctant to ask for help so I thought I'd do it for him. Tami it seems like when it rains it pours. It sounds like a crisis situation - not elective. Reminds me of when I had to have a similar operation years ago and the surgeon told me to go home and try not to move until he could get me scheduled. I had an excellent outcome and Philo should as well.
I am waiting for his address and will post it as soon as I can.

//Cross posted from the hyperreflexia/clonus thread.//

OK here is the dopey skinny. After meeting with the neurosurgeon and his team Thurs, I have been scheduled for spinal surgery post haste. (8/31 or as much sooner as they can arrange it). Apparently i am more than lucky to still be walking let alone bummed that my Elvis Leg would bounce off 5.11 foot holds.
C3 to C7 are badly trashed and pinching all but the merest of energy flow through my spinal cord and branch nerves. The imagery clearly shows several bone spurs, like guillotines, threatening to sever the cord at any wrong moment (Like the fall off the ladder a few weeks ago or the fall off the approach to the West Ridge in Eldo before that. Fortunately that fall into the river only resulted in the bashed elbow that went all gross and fugly. CrimperGirl jokingly said the blown bursa looked like an angry red scrotum bulging out of my elbow. Eweeee.
The prognosis if all goes well is for a very complete recovery with only minor limitations.
But there is no option for improvement besides the knife. And way too much risk not too have it done NOW.
The neurosurgeon believes that the myriad of ailments that have plagued me for several years are related to spinal degeneration and should fully abate after slice and dice time, Including the episode of neural damage that had me believing I was heading for amputation just last year.
It is amazing knowing how well this diagnosis ties together and explains so much ailing.

Apparently these spinal strangulations go along way to explain why so many Tacos think I am such an as#@&%e, no flow to the brain. HAHAHAHAHA....

This was an extremely startling turn off events. All of these semi-debilitating ailments that for years have plagued and baffled me are tied into the spinal damage. Foolishly I ignored the pain and pushed through the limitations, wrongly assuming my two decade old prosthetic knee was my only health concern. It all makes sense now but it was only after the symptoms affected my 12 surgery leg that testing led to the discovery of the time bomb in my neck. I can't begin to tell you how lucky I feel that this has been discovered and so comparatively easy to remedy. But I also can't even begin to express how terrified I am. Not of the surgery or future but of my past several years. I had no idea how close to the edge my regular dice rolling had me. Bobert is right, asking for help is the hardest thing for me to do and if not for the need and urgency I would not ask at all. Mr, Culp sir, my friend, thank you for thinking of me.

Yes Tami divorce and moving to new digs really strained my finances but not being able to work more than a day or two at a time for the past four months drained me dry.

The positive thoughts mean the world to me thank you all.

Philo, I've had a similar speedbump on the road of life. Lots of degeneration, bone spurs etc. These resulted in aches and pains that were chronic and at times debilitating. But, like you ignored them and pushed on with exercise and stretching thinking it would go away. Then in Jan. 1995 while skiing here in Jackson, I got hit from behind by an out of control snowboarder in a blind side turn. I was completely taken out. Broke some teeth, three ribs and then my neck really started to hurt. I never went to the doctor. I went to the dentist. I knew my ribs were broken but that had happened before so I diagnosed and treated myself. The neck was more painful but I still thought It would get better. I was scheduled to go on an expedition to Nepal so in late March, while at the doctor getting my third world country shots, my condition was finally discussed. I was sent to a neurologist. With a look of horror on his face, he said I had been walking around with a broken, severely degenerated neck. He would not even let me drive home and put me in a neck and head brace. I had surgery four days later. C4,5 and 6 were fused using bone from my own hip. The good news is an almost perfect result. The worst pain was actually from where they took the bone. My range of motion is a little less that's all. I don't notice it and can carry on normally. Still ski 75 to a hundred days and still climb. You'll do fine! My only regret is not getting it checked out sooner. Send me the address. Best, Steve

I still have several of these signed Half Dome 50th Anniversary pitons and would like to make one available here in support of this fundraiser.

These have been selling for $200. with all proceeds going directly to help Philo. Only 23 were signed and numbered by Royal Robbins, Jerry Gallwas and Mike Sherrick shortly after the event. Contact me if you are interested in one.

Happy to help out here as I have been in helping Roy and Rich in past fundraising efforts.

I'm very sorry to hear of your upcoming surgery. I suspect that your quality of life will be improved by having it done.

Until my real estate transaction is settled, I'm currently unable to chip in other that a miniscule amount, but will do so after I get back home again (travelling right now).

Never know who else might bid.

OK, I'll bid US$25 for Bobert's Forrest Mountaineering Sling, plus will add postage and package. (Surface mail, basic packaging.) By starting modestly, hopefully we can have a bidding war, and keep bumping the thread.

If I win, someone needs to tell me what to send, to who.

Edit: No need to react instantly. Just a nudge when the thread falls to the bottom of the front page. Alternatively, we could go in increments of $1.00, which should generate some action. You meant "$26.00 plus postage", didn't you?

Things are looking up. Which is good because I shouldn't be looking up right now. I do not yet know what else will ultimately be involved or required but I just found out an hour ago that my Medical Insurance Provider has approved the surgery scheduled for 8am Wed Aug 31st at St Jo's in Denver. Without the incredible generosity and support of this most wonderful clan I would be unable to proceed even with the anxiously awaited approval. And so I thank you all from the whole of my very humbled heart. I decided to start a Trip Report of this oddventure that wouldn't clog the important stuff of the forum front page. I will post updates and observations along the way and invite anyone interested to come along for the ride.

Silver, I have been 'fooling' myself at great risk for so many years it's not funny. The Neurosurgeon's diagnosis was a sucker punch to my psychological solar-plexus. I knew surgery would be inevitable but I had no idea it's was going to need to be immediate.

Locker thanx ever so for turning down my offer to come down that day.
I know we're all gonna die, but that coulda kilt me. And I don't mean plaid skirts amigo.

Sorry, bids that lack gratuitous insults, trash-talking, vainglorious boasts, and other crowd-pleasing editorial content are invalid. We need to make Phil laugh. abend's previous bids, admittedly mostly via a third party, were a bit lacking in this regard, and that can't be overlooked forever.

My $40.00 last bid stands as the highest valid bid for the sling. I refer to the Wings of Egos thread should any entertainment be needed.
