Even though the CalTrans Road Conditions web site said that 120 over Tioga pass was not open when we left in the morning, the highway sign outside of Oakdale, one hour later, indicated that the pass was open.

Gary and I pick up Linda at the Crane Flat gas station and head out to a lovely opening day... planning for a fun romp on Stately Pleasure Dome we find no climbers there when we arrive, and for a long time we have it all to ourselves
at the base of South Crack on which Linda leads the first two pitches as one
then I lead the next two pitches as one and Gary takes us home with the final two pitches as one... three pitches with a 70m rope.

Tenaya Lake is ice bound for the day, and there is a lot of water melting out of the remnant snow pack

On the walk down we don't see any lizards, like last year, but we do run into Maysho out for a quick run up South Crack with his lovely companion.

We go on to climb Dixie Peach and top rope Malletosis... the weather on the Sierra Crest is looking real

we call it a day, go down to snack and then tour the meadows...

a wonderful day as always marking the start of the season up high.

Hey Ed, Gary and Linda! Looks like you folks had a good time!

Kane and I were in Hetch Hetchy. We went to Rancheria Falls. The blast from Wapama Falls was gale force. A guide told me that she has never seen so much water coming off it.

the walk off on Stately Pleasure Dome was dry but for a small trickle of water that was easily avoided. There was also some small amount of pine needles and a bit of grit that will soon be gone with the climber traffic. The copse of pines at the end of the walk off is currently sitting in a large puddle so you want to avoid ending up there on the walk off, go a bit west.

temps were great... got a sunburn on my neck, that'll teach me not to get a summer-hair-cut!
when the clouds rolled in, it was cool to cold

lots of water, and even for the road only Lembert and Stately Pleasure Domes were really accessible... no parking in the avi danger zone of Pywiak... and many if not most of the turnout are still embanked.

The camp grounds were down right flooded, and the Meadows more like a marsh. The river was running big as were all the creeks.

Way to be on it Ed! I was recovering from a 3 day stint at Shuteye.
Beautiful pics man.
Heading to the Valley tomorrow, might be worth it just to pop up and show the family Tenaya lake with all that ice. Very cool. Makes me miss the place.
I used to do the same thing and then snow shoe in to Unicorn and solo it or Cockscomb. Opening day/week is the best.

Ed Hartouni, super nice Thread. Thanks! Wish you had more pictures.

I'm still trying to wrap my brain around the ways to get to TM when 120 from the Valley is closed thru to TM. Did you go Sonora Pass? I still have a pretty big learning curve.

This is my first year to even view the Eastside from last summer to following spring. Pretty incredible. I almost got taken out by snow fall February in Mammoth. Lots to learn; more than healthy respect. :D lynne

Looking forward to being up there in a week or two.....hopefully.

Hmmmmm.....Look at those lines on the lake. They seem to be related. The two curves are on the same circle, hinting to a relationship between the two. Alien craft below? Or mere coincidence? Am I the only one seeing this?

is this like cutting the first tracks thru powder snow on an exposed ridgeline along 395?

Yes it was very beautiful up there, though, coming from Donner Summit, Nancy and I are sort of over lots of snow, like we are allergic to white right now, as we drove up the pass we spoke of our longing for flowers and green plants...

The Ice on Tenaya Lake cracked while we were climbing South Crack, sorry to not have taken a pic, there was a crack the entire length of the lake!

Nice seeing Ed, Gary, and Linda...

Today (my birthday by the way! 49 years old YIKES!) we are in El Portal, basking in the heat, and over-the-top flowering plants.

Yesterday, Fathers Day, I joined my son to carry a load and and watch him rig a complicated slackline between Arrowhead Spire, and Arrowhead Arete. Wild line, crazy exposure...It took longer than anticipated, he and his buddy are back up there today to walk it some more.

To all the skiers, yes conditions still look fantastic, I am heading back up there on Wednesday to guide 9 teens on a ski mountaineering camp at Tioga Pass for ASI. So I will get my dose of steep June corn, will report...

I was scoping the high country out from Glacier Point on Friday, but plans to be on the Tioga Road with my wife were torpedoed at the last minute. I greatly appreciate the post, Ed, so we (my wife and I) can see what we missed. Next weekend for sure!

Happy Birthday, Peter! Here you go, complete with the cabins of sleepy Bennetville:

AND, there were flowers blooming. You just have to look very carefully in the patches between the snow:

You are confusing Lost Arrow Spire, with the classic Arrowhead Spire, right next to Arrowhead Arete, FA. David Brower and Dick Leonard 1937. Just an 80ft. gap...

Thanks for the birthday wishes!

Peter

Thanks Willoughby!! Looks fat up on Dana, we are supposed to do the Solstice with the kids, probably climb up from below, stopping before being exposed to the giant cornice...
