I have a permit for next weekend for Mt. Whitney. Back when we applied for the permit, the original idea was to head up the East Face or East Buttress routes. I'm guessing with the amount of snow this year, there is probably still significant snowpack up there. Does anyone know if these routes are climbable? Is the Mountaineer's route a better choice? Snowshoes/skis required on the approach?

Thanks!

A buddy of mine just got back from the Whitney area this week, he said that after two miles on the main trail he hit pretty consistent snow. He was heading to Trail Camp. I would plan on leaving VERY early and taking advantage of firm snow and making good time, hopefully the NF of Lone Pine Creek drainage is still filled in at the Ebersbacher Ledges. Personally I would ski in if you have the means, skiing out would be a blast.

I have not been up there this season, but I would expect a lot. Shasta had 8 feet in parking lot yesterday. Snowshoes will save ur butt up higher in afternoon, but if u travel in AM might b abe to go w/o? E. Face is in sun mos of day, only snow concerns I would think be on ramp??? I'm sure its good to go now though. Pint sized axe for mtnrs descent might b smart.

To get to the routes on Whitney, you need to take the Mountaineer's Route to the base (north fork of lone pine creek).

The Whitney Portal Store Message Board will have the best current info.

Landcruiserbob-

Yep, looks like we'll just have to be ready for whatever conditions we find.

Hi,

I drove up 395 a few days ago. The "washboard" on the East Face route is still snow covered which would pretty much rule out that route. The buttress is clear of snow. Getting to the base is another story though. Expect snow.

Cheers, Roy
