I thought the shark was also a metaphor for Luongo's stick handling skillz.

I especially enjoyed Luongo's classy giveaway for the first goal. What could he have been thinking? Maybe he just wanted to let the Sharks get one to make a game of it.

Luongo is the weak link in the CAucks lineup for sure.....hard to believe we are stuck with him until he is a senior citizen. To think he is making $10 mill a year---He is as useful as a sack of rusty hammers.
He is good for one soft gimme goal every game and that may catch up to us.

Go Canucks, woot, woot.
I guess from the SJ perspective Eager is still going to play on Friday. As long as he doesn't hurt anyone, I am cool with him losing games singlehandedly.
Could be a sweep, though I kinda think 5 is more likely.

Yes indeed. Go Canucks go. On the anniversary of our last Campbell cup win 17 years ago to the day.
Next up Boston or TB.
Not sure which I would prefer, travel sucks either way. Boston has a slower defense, but a better goalie than TB (refer to save yesterday as the above poster mentions).
TB has speed to kill up front. We have a pretty decent defense (specially if we get our couple of injured guys back).
Ah, either way it is good to win tonight.

Can't take sides not being a fan of either team. Fun game to watch, but what about the officiating?
The icing call which set up the faceoff where VC tied the game with 13 seconds left was a bad call, right?
Then in the 1st OT, as if shell shocked they called nothing. High sticks, tripping? It was a free for all.
VC did deserve to win the series regardless of the ugly details though.
Sharks looked relieved to be done really.
Bring it on Bruins!!!

From that perspective, doesn't matter who wins. 1/3 to 1/2 the players on every team are Canadian, so we always win.
Of course, the thing drags on interminably, the death of 1,000 faceoffs. It's kind of embarrassing.

So the final begins in Vancouver next Wednesday, June 1st. Boston and Tampa Bay have their seventh game to decide who is in the final, and off we go. If the final goes seven games, the last game would be on June 15th, or possibly the opening day of the World Series - the 'world' championship that non-Americans aren't much welcome at.
A Vancouver team, the Millionaires, last won the Stanley Cup in 1915. (Surprising they kept playing during World War I.) A team from Victoria also won it in that period. No Canadian team has won the cup since Montreal in 1993, although heaps of Canadians have.

Heartbreaker for Tampa and huge win for Tampa.
Hard to imagine two more evenly matched teams playing with more heart.
Roloson and his team mates expressions and obvious disappointment were enough to bring a tear to a glass eye.

I didn't see the game the same way.
It was great to see an entire game with no penalties called, a credit to the officials and both teams.
But despite the low score Boston dominated to the end, when TB could not get posession for long enough to even pull their goalie.
The finals are gonna be awesome, and I don't think the Bruins are the team Vacouver would have chosen to face.

No penalties called?
Who benefits from that? The speed based skill team or the most physically punishing team. Sure there were no penalties, just a little outcome management, Gary Buttman style (ex-NBA exec).
Never forget the press conference when Buttman gets introduced as the new commish. He didn't know who Jeremy Roenick, who was also on hand, was. Pretty sure Buttman had never seen a hockey game before.

Happy for my friend in Boston (loved that series) ... I'm still bummed about the Sharks losing to Vancouver who proved to be an excellent team. It's been a another disappointing season for my Sharks ... it seems like they lost a lot of steam in the Detroit series ... the last game was a true heart breaker but it was a summary of what it's been like to watch the Sharks in last half of this "second season" the playoffs.
So as always ... shorten the damn season! But they won't there's too much greed involved.

Is this true?
Despite Stanley Cup drought, Canada isn't fully embracing the Canucks
A Canadian team hasn't won the championship since 1993, but there's some things about Vancouver (location, the city's beauty) that the rest of the country doesn't care for.
By Helene Elliott
May 31, 2011, 5:48 p.m.
Canada prides itself on having invented hockey, and it sometimes seems this vast country is united only by its passion for a game that mixes finesse with fisticuffs and celebrates players who carry on through the pain of separated shoulders and bashed-in noses.
Canada still produces more than half the players in the National Hockey League — the number has recently hovered around 53% — but no team based in Canada has won the Stanley Cup since the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Kings in 1993. Four of Canada's six teams have lost in the Cup finals since then: the Vancouver Canucks in 1994, Calgary Flames in 2004, Edmonton Oilers in 2006 and Ottawa Senators against the Ducks in 2007.
So it would seem logical that Canada's Cup-starved fans would back the Canucks over the Boston Bruins when the Cup finals start Wednesday at Vancouver's Rogers Arena.
Not so much.
The Canucks are getting great support in Vancouver, where cabs bear team placards, people wear team jerseys on busy downtown streets and prices for tickets through online resellers are averaging more than $1,000 per seat. But the Canucks aren't the popular choice across the country despite being the last team from Canada standing.
"It's a complex thing," said David Fransen, the consul general for Canada in Los Angeles and an avid hockey fan.
"It's tough because in Ontario you can be fans of Toronto, Detroit, Buffalo or Montreal and places beyond. In Alberta you're a fan of the Oilers or Flames, and at what point do you transfer that loyalty to Canada?"
For some fans that point hasn't arrived.
Columnist Joe O'Connor wrote in the National Post that cheering for the Canucks, who had the NHL's best record this season, "is like rooting for the New York Yankees: it cheapens the thrill. … Are we that hungry? Me? I'd rather starve, or wait, at least until the next Cinderella story comes along."
An editorial in the Toronto Sun that called the Cup finals "the greatest two weeks on the Canadian calendar" noted that many fans haven't adopted the Canucks. "Can't say as we blame them. The reason is simple. It's not their team. In fact, it would also be a safe bet more Canadians will be rooting for the Boston Bruins than cheering for Vancouver, even if both have 17 Canadians on their roster."
Why the hate?
Jealousy is a likely factor. Vancouver's mountain and sea vistas make it one of the world's most beautiful cities, and it has milder winters than the rest of Canada. Its success in hosting the Winter Olympics has given it new prominence internationally, too. Is it fair for Vancouver to have all that and the Stanley Cup too?
"Vancouver is now a place that is identified as having come of age and has a newfound sense of pride. It's unapologetic pride in its excellence. In the past there's been a tendency to be modest and even timid," Fransen said.
Some of the weak support stems from geography. The Canucks play most of their games while the more populous Eastern part of Canada is sleeping and their players aren't as familiar as those in Toronto or Montreal.
Tradition also plays a part. Canada's easternmost Maritime provinces have ancient ties to Boston through seafaring industries. And some fans respect the Bruins as one of the league's "Original Six" teams and see the Canucks, who joined the NHL in 1970, as lacking in history.
"This is kind of a different country on this side of the mountains," said Cam Cole, a columnist for the Vancouver Sun and six-year resident of Vancouver. "People look at it as tree-hugging, marijuana-smoking weirdoes out here. It's a strange world that nobody considers exactly like the rest of Canada.
"The other thing is they play so late that if you're watching you're kind of half paying attention. The center of the universe based on East Coast," he said, poking fun at Toronto's self-importance, "and the whole national perception is formed by that. There's not the same adoration as there is for Montreal or, God help us, Toronto."
Canucks forward Alexandre Burrows said he and his teammates want to win for each other, the organization and Canucks fans. "What happens outside doesn't impact my preparation or the way I'm going to feel if I win the Cup or if I don't," he said Tuesday.
"It's nice to bring the Stanley Cup to Canada because I'm Canadian. But at the same time I really don't care a whole lot about what people in Calgary or Edmonton or Quebec think."
Roy MacGregor, a much-honored columnist for the nationally distributed Globe and Mail, said hockey fans in Canada remain "hyper-sensitive" to the fact the Cup hasn't been won by a Canada-based team for so long. He said Vancouver's distance from Eastern-based media works against the Canucks' popularity more than the fact their top two players — twins Henrik and Daniel Sedin — are Swedish and that standout center Ryan Kesler is American.
Most Canadians, MacGregor said, "just aren't that familiar with the players. No one knew anything of Kevin Bieksa, for example. And Roberto Luongo has this huge national rep of not winning the big games, despite his Olympic win right there in Vancouver."
Had the Tampa Bay Lightning won the Eastern Conference championship instead of the Bruins, MacGregor said, French-Canadians would have backed the Lightning because of French players like Martin St. Louis and Vincent Lecavalier.
Personal connections like that influence rooting interest. Fransen has long been a friend of Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli, who was an agent before becoming a club executive. Chiarelli represented Fransen's son, Aaron, who played major junior hockey.
"All that said, in the end I don't think anything trumps the fact that hockey is our national religion. Nothing binds Canada together the way hockey does," Fransen said.
MacGregor thinks the rest of Canada could be persuaded to back the Canucks.
"I think the country is warming to the idea," he said, "but it will take some early success in the final for them to leap aboard the bandwagon."

It's amazing what 1/4 second can do in a game as fast as hockey... Basically that was the interference call right there. Any injury on an interference penalty results in a misconduct. Them's the rules. Blindside? No. Rome lined his man (Horton) up when he came into the neutral zone, stayed in FRONT of him, and contact of some sort was a given at the blue line.
Seriously... What d-men hear all through their childhood is, 'If your man comes over the blue line in any way but on his ass, you're not doing your job.' Odd man rushes and such negate that, but it stands if you've got enough of your guys back.
I hope Horton's going to bounce back.
Food for thought on interference calls,
Possession of the Puck: The last player to touch the puck, other than the goalkeeper, shall be considered the player in possession. The player deemed in possession of the puck may be checked legally, provided the check is rendered immediately following his loss of possession.

Lucic was in posession of the puck and was in fact lining up a shot on goal when Rome hit Horton. The puck was away for at least a full second.
Horton is out for the series, and it could be worse than that. A serious concussion like that is hard to assess until some time goes by.
Rome is suspended for the duration as it should be. In fact the suspension will carry over to next season if this series does not go to seven.
You can watch the play here. It is clear that Lucic had posession of the puck cleanly before either player crossed the blue line.

That was a BS hit. Late, and he drove his shoulder into Thorton's head, so much so that he jumped up and his skates left the ice.
It happens in a split second, but blatant disregard for your competitor's well being like that is bad sportsmanship.

That was an ugly hit and by today's NHL rules as I understand them, illegal.
I hope Horton's OK and support drastic punitive measures for these kind of hits.
Let's also bear in mind that Rome and the Canucks don't have a monopoly on ugly hits and that Boston's dished out some beauties as well. Their intent and delivery were identical, only the consequences differed.

|

From Mike Murphy who was in charge of discipline on this hit due to Campbell's conflict of interest,
"This has nothing to do with Rule #48 [the blindside rule hit]," Murphy said. "This is just an interference penalty, an interference hit. If it was immediate after he released the puck, it would be a legal hit. We have them all the time."
1/2 second earlier, and Horton would still be out with no call on the play. Head UP all the time, especially on the D man who picks you up. Rome was put out vs SJ from a check to the head, and already attempted to contact Horton. The guy cares, should've pulled that check back, but it wouldn't have been an injury if Horton was looking. It's a game fast enough that the right decision can't always be made, and both parties missed on this one.

FACT ! This is Gary Buttman series management. He needs for Boston to win because, hey, they are a bigger market.
Boston has free license, but Vancouver better watch it or the whole team will wind up suspended.
Zdano Chara already broke one guys neck this year, blind side, hit to the head. No fine, no suspension.
Buttman's ruined the game, I just wish I could get a run at him on the ice. WORST commish in any sport, and thats saying a lot.
edit: Nevah, so what do you think is going to happen when you drive somebody into the stanchion? It was a purposeful act. He's a 6'9" sissy who doesn't lay out to many face to face hits in open ice. Classic Euro trash tactics.

Jim, you seem to misunderstand. I always thought Canadian teams had alot of class. Example; Montreal, as a Bruins fan always hated them. But you can't argue with success. The Leafs; if not the greatest team at least a class act. And I always had alot of respect for the other Canadian teams . Ya know, what do they know about hockey in Florida? After watching the Montreal series, I think they should be nominated for an acadamy award. And the Canucks just play dirty.
I'm also not saying the Bruins are lilly white. They play physical hockey. If the Canucks didn't start all this s#!t with the biting and hits to the head, ect, they would probaby be winning the cup tomorrow night. They lit a fire and now, who knows?
Did they get the best record in the league by playing like this all season? If so, I wouldn't be so proud.
Enjoy the game tomorrow, should be interesting.

If you think I've got an axe to grind just wait till the series is over and listen to the crowd reaction when Buttman takes the ice to hand over the cup.
It doesn't matter which city it happens in, they will be booing so loud it will drown out the p.a. system. If he had any respect for the game he'd have someone else hand it over, Gretzky maybe?
Most anyone who's been watching hockey for more than a season or two shares my feelings about the commish. He was an NBA lawyer who didn't know anything about the game before he took over, most fans still feel that way now.

Bettmann does what the governors (owners) tell him to do. Basically their errand boy, doing nothing to jeopardize revenues. Hence their long-standing resistance to restraints on violent behaviour, to changes that would rebalance the game towards the offensive (average goals per game down significantly over the last ten years), and to any real mandatory drug testing. And, of course, to any "interference" by government in how professional hockey is managed - although they're all quick to run for subsidies from local and regional government for their rinks.
And the terms of the trust for Lord Stanley's cup state that it is to be awarded to the top amateur ice hockey team in Canada.

The Burrows biting incident showed no class at all, the Rome late hit on Horton was way late. Some players are known to be dirty players, I dont think these guys are known to be dirty players. Alot of players are looking for a cheap shot, especially when the refree has his back turned. It has nothing to do with what team their on, every team has one. Its hockey crunch time. Lets face it, all these guys are desperate to win the cup. Its like that every year.

I still don't think Rome was head hunting... A couple of the Bruins have even said that. I don't trust them, though.
The series is a whole lot more interesting tied 2-2, that's all I know. Hope there's something resembling a decent game tomorrow. Blowouts, and no shows are crap either way.

Nick, you are all concerned with the politics of the sport. It is politics, there is money involved, therefore it is corrupt. Pro sports are "for entertainment purposes only". No matter who wins this game the sun will still rise tomorrow. Lighten up, it's no more important than if I send some random boulder problem.
Enjoy the game, I'm going to go have some "Bruin Fingers", as they are now known in this house.

It sounds like some parts of downtown Vancouver are a bit scary right now, on what is otherwise a pleasant early summer evening. Three vehicles overturned (one burnt), a few fires, maybe some fights and broken windows - the reports are fragmentary. Let's hope that'll be all there is to it.

Montreal is famous for its hockey riots, the most recent in 2008. Especially the "Richard Riot" of 1955.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Riot
It's still light here, and I suspect the police are being very pro-active about controlling whatever is actually happening. (Too early to really tell.) Also, anyone rioting may have forgotten that videocameras are far more common than in 1994, both outside businesses and personal ones. Which means you have a good chance of being a 'star', if you're dumb enough.

Jim,
Having lived in Seattle BITD, worked on Vancouver Is, climbed and traveled
extensively all across Canada I have nothing but fond memories. To wit,
we arrived in Gaspe while there was still snow on the beaches and the campgrounds
were still closed. It was late so we threw our tent down at a picnic area.
The next morning we hear someone clearing his throat to give us fair warning.
The poor ranger was freaking apologizing for disturbing us but would we please
pack up at our earliest convenience? Are you flipping kidding me?
The rels in Barrie report all is peaceful there. ;-)
edit:
I did have one 'interesting' experience on the frozen tundra. On the way to
the Bugs we stopped at a liquor store somewhere north of Penticton. The
first (?) Worlds were being played between Canada and Roosia. We stood there
listening to the radio at full volume while the zombies completely ignored
us for a looong shift. When the break came they came back from the dead and
distractedly saw to our pressing needs. Ho ho ho...

The news media will naturally focus on things that are newsworthy, but whether that will present a fair picture of what's happening is another matter. It certainly won't be complete, as they can't be everywhere. It's tempting to jump to conclusions, but risky too.
That said, the area near the CBC building - a few blocks from the arena - has apparently been declared a riot zone. All sorts of stupidity going on, including tear gas, rubber bullets, overturned cars (one burnt), fights, police dogs, batons, someone falling off a bridge, fires, and some looting.

Still digesting the unfortunate turn of events downtown.
Shameful and embarrassing to say the least.
It would appear that what were seeing is the consequences of a marginal percentage of otherwise respectful and well behaved fans making a mess of things. I was real proud of the post game proceedings inside Rogers Place with most in attendance staying to cheer both the Bruins and Canucks.
One has to wonder if the outcome would have been any different if the Canucks had won with some people just wanting to come downtown to drink and cause trouble. We won't know the full extent of the damage till tomorrow but I for one feel horrible about this and hope that Boston fans and people outside Vancouver can see this behavior doesn't reflect the attitudes of the majority of Vancouverites, British Columbians or Canadians.

much 'fun' the rioters were having and how it was clear that they fully
intended to do this win or lose. They've not allowed the QE Theatre crowd out!
Sounds to me like the VPD should not have responded wearing kid gloves and
maybe downtown Vancouver needs some surveillance cameras.

On a hockey note, I thought the officiating was designed to bring Boston the cup. Not to say Tim Thomas might not have been able to do it on his own, but Boston got away with some unbelievable thuggery throughout the playoffs. Hope somebody breaks Chara's neck next year. Last night's game was crazy. VC came out hard and for the first two periods I expected them to get the win. Quick kept LA in the game, and in the third they woke up.
Both teams play pretty good defense. I'm glad Browns hit did not do any serious harm to Sedin. That looked a little scary for a minute.
VC did take a couple pretty good dives though... there was one behind the net that actually worked too.

Doubt we'll see another riot. You need a big crowd for that to happen, which a: the cops wont allow, and b: everyone is allready disillusioned so no reason to go downtown. Im sure the criminal element responsible for the last one would love to do it again, but you need a bunch of pissed off fans to join in and that really only happens when you lose the cup winning game.
Interestingly my friend was in the crowd last year when they set the bear on fire at the start of it all and there was a guy with a huge sign that said "RIOT 2011" before it even started. He took a picture ill try and find it later. Probably some of the same hooligans who coordinated the first one in the 90's now using social media to expand the anarchy.

Every other city riots when they win.
Vancouver is unique that they double-down on the shame by only rioting when they lose.

I don't know why but I think Nashville's gonna make it to the big dance. Rinne is a great goalie and consistently up for big games. Quick is amazing but I'm not sure he can keep it up. Other than Martinez, the LA defense has been spectacular as well as physical.
Go Habs...................next year.

Schneider ain't new. He's the reason they made the playoffs! Lou is a bum. Everyone knows it. Flopping around like a whale all the time.
It sure is nice to have a solid positional man in net. D men like it better too since they dont have to babysit lou, they can join the attack more which is when van is at its best.
Gretz is right! He had goons to protect him bitd. So did mario. They used to send the d men for boxing lessons so if anyone got out of line they would kick the living sh#* out of them.
Then they put in the enforcer rule and now everyone is out with a concussion. Ya the shoulder pads and elbow pads are insane too but people have no respect because they know no one is coming for revenge at risk of a major.
Which is why went brown had the late hit on sedin and the boys went after him, i was stoked because thats the way it should be!

Lou didn't win the olympics. It was his fault we almost lost! Crosby saved the day! Even in his best performance the offense had to come to his defence.
Go Canucks! Better play like you showed us you can last game.

So now the only Canadian team left in the interminable playoffs is Ottawa. What do you hockey fans do in such a situation? I suppose it could be worse - what if the only Canadian team left was Toronto? (Not that the Maple Laughs are going to get to the playoffs...) Still, a difficult choice.
Oh well, half the players are Canucks, regardless who they play for.

That was an NBA-like bogus interference call on Williams that gave the

I disagree with the view that hockey and the NHL are solely Canadian institutions.
The fact that hockey is such a big part of North American culture with great players and dedicated fans on both sides of the border (as well as other countries in the northern hemisphere) is an inherent part of it's appeal.
The fact that a Canadian team hasn't won the Stanley Cup since 93 is because for a variety of reasons, our team aren't good enough. It is however, interesting to note that this period coincides with Count Bettman's tenure as league commissioner. (Time for my tin foil hat?)
I agree with the view that expanding the league to the deep south may be a key factor in the league's financial challenges and begs the question as to why franchises are subsidized in locations with limited fan bases and revenue streams.
I still think the NHL deserves to be boycotted for the remainder of this season to remind them that without their fans there'd be no money to fight over and that we're the disenfranchised stakeholder that happens to pay the bills.

I was hoping that they'd award the Stanley Cup this year to the amateur champions, that being a term of the original donation:
Originally, Stanley intended that the Cup should be awarded to the top amateur hockey team in Canada, to be decided by the acceptance of a challenge from another team. He made five preliminary regulations:
1.The winners shall return the Cup in good order when required by the trustees so that it may be handed over to any other team which may win it.
2.Each winning team, at its own expense, may have the club name and year engraved on a silver ring fitted on the Cup.
3.The Cup shall remain a challenge cup, and should not become the property of one team, even if won more than once.
4.The trustees shall maintain absolute authority in all situations or disputes over the winner of the Cup.
5.If one of the existing trustees resigns or drops out, the remaining trustee shall nominate a substitute.

i will bet you all are watching,no way of really telling ,just sayin .
This is funny because i actually didn't even pay attention to the regular season this year. My buddy and i had a joke at gf that every time i watched the canucks game they would lose. If i could have watched the oil i might have been more excited.
I did watch the Oil Change series on Sportsnet which i found quite interesting.
http://www.sportsnet.ca/shows/connected/oil-change-season-3/
The playoffs have been somewhat interesting with a typical Canucks exit...
This Bruins- Rangers bout has been pretty interesting tho.

For Chicago to win Crawford will need to play at the same level Quick has been the last two series. Detroit played physical, LA will be more so. Remember how LA shut down the Devils' big scoring line last year.
The other series? Watch out Matt Cooke.

I stand corrected on the Kings season vs Chicago this year. I saw the game the Kings won, maybe I watched it three times? Whatever.
Sure that was a big comeback against Detroit, but did the Redwings really look that strong? Not. Beautiful as always (I am an incorrigible Wings fan) but not on that level for the cup this time 'round.
This will be a great western finals and at the same time the Bruins and Flyers will be beating each other to a pulp. Yeah!

Ithaca... fond memories.
My mom did post grad work at Cornell late 60s. We lived in Cayuga Heights, and I had a friend down the street whose parents provided a basement apartment to Ken Dryden who played goalie for Cornell. My friend Reid and I hung out down there and played pool with Dryden. We were just a couple young punks but he put up with us since Reids' dad was a big Cornell hockey backer.
Life was grand, then we moved to Buffalo...

Sorry about Buffalo, although i like that town as well.
Actually Buffalo was cool. I was just kidding. I became a dedicated Sabres fan, and still get excited when I think of the rock star presence (long blond hair and all) of Jim Schoenfeld. That old Memorial Auditorium in Buffalo was steep like El Cap!

I think Sutter may have made an error starting with Quick. The guy took a shitload of shots the afternoon before, and looked less than his usual solid self from the get go. Bernier is a reliable goalie, and with the other line changes forced on him by scratches it might have been interesting to start with him in net this time.
Of course retrospect is a perfect science...
Was it the third goal where two veteran defensemen were fighting for the puck right in front of quick and basically scored one for Chicago? Let your goalie make the saves guys...

that's a little extreme for a guy who led his team to the finals twice and won it once (not to mention the Olympic gold medal), but he and the rest of the Penguins sure are struggling to get the puck past Tuukka.
I'm happy as could be about it, but no Bruins fan walked away last night feeling anything but lucky...if not for a few lucky bounces and a couple outstanding saves by Rask, the score could have easily been 4-1 at the end of the second period.
A lot has been made about the Penguins lack of D, but I also think they are a little stunned that when they come flying down the ice and pound the net with pretty play after pretty play that the Bruins don't just stop and watch...instead the B's just keep banging away (last night the way Marchand or Lucic just kept racing the puck back across without seeming flustered by the near goals, seemed to really frustrate the Penguins).

I'm flipping back and forth between nba and kings-hawks. is it just me or does the center ice crown look weird? ...is that what it always looks like on the ice? doesn't look anything like the crown on their jerseys (even when they wear the ones with just crowns)...looks more like a space ship.
sorry, maybe I'm just a Bruins fan getting psyched up for the finals (not like the Bruins have some work of art at center ice, no doubt), but that "crown" is distracting. tell me I'm not alone on this.

Holy shit! When Campbell toughed out that Penguin's power play after stopping Malkin's slap shot...his leg was broken! That is the stuff of freaking Bruin's legend. I saw it happen and not knowing his leg was broken was still totally impressed with the way he not only stood up, finished the shift, but actually played his position until the seconds ticked off...crowd gave him a huge ovation once it was killed, but it would have been even huger if everyone had known it was a broken leg. Add this to the game 7 comeback in R1 and with this kind of grit, there is only one logical conclusion: no one stands a chance against these B's. Hawks, Kings, whoever. Freaking legendary run that youngsters in new england will still be talking about in their 80's.
^^^that is the image that I bet is on every 12-year-old hockey players wall in the greater boston area for years...I wanna hang it on my wall, for goodness sakes

Some of the predictions over the last several weeks have been downright ... silly.
The Hawks proved last night, without a question, that Rask and the Bruins' defense is not impervious. The Bruins played out of their minds in that last series, but the Penguins also fell apart. I cannot fathom the Blackhawks doing that, and they've been continuing to look more solid as the playoffs have gone on. Hell, they scored twice as many goals on the Bruins last night than the Pens did in their four games.
Also, the playoffs are a battle of attrition, and while the Hawks have had the deepest team in the league all season, the Bruins are dropping bodies. What in the heck did Horton do to himself last night? Looks like he just aggravated something that's already very wrong, prob. a wonky shoulder.
Looks like we'll have a series, which is always exciting, but I expect the Hawks to come out on top. As with my prediction with the Kings series, Hawks in five or six.

I live near Toronto, therefore it is too painful for me to be a hockey fan.
This playoff season, the Maple Leafs squandered a 3-1 lead [or was it a 4-1 lead?] to Boston with only ten minutes left in Game 7.
I have been schlepping, fixing and climbing almost ever since.
Accordingly, last night as I was drinking some fine William Hill Napa Valley Chardonnay in the Mountain Room Bar, I was amazed and not amused to see Boston still in it. However I was quite delighted when Chicago won.
Do Bobby Hull and Stan Makita still play for Chicago?

WOW! that's why the Cup is the greatest show there is, with the only equal being the World Cup. But hockey players are the classiest sportsmen by a long shot. Nothing beats the hand shake.. And NBC sucks bad for totally missing putting Jaromir on camera for, most likely, his last handshake line. They also couldn't wait til everybody had hoisted the Cup before going to a commercial touting their prowess at televising sports. LAME!

Watched the Kings smother the Sharks last night. LA played like they played most of the year. Standing tall at the blue line, separating opponents from the puck and keeping the slot clear of traffic. Quick made some great saves, but fortunately didn't have to stand on his head. Offense was sharp and we did get a couple of lucky bounces.
Probably helps us to have 2 guys on the team from the Philadelphia team that came back and won a series when down 0-3.
I hope the Sharks are feeling nervous about not closing out LA early.

Yup. Sure looked like it! Period Two was a little shaky with all the penalties, but they put that all to rest in the last 20. Favorite part of the game was when Pierre said they were "going all Harlem Globetrotters over the Blues." That's the Blackhawks I know and love.

The game shouldn't have even gone into overtime since that one goal of the Kings in regular time was goalie imteference. Then right before the last goal in 2nd OT the puck clearly didn't hit the glass and the Rangers should of had a power play on the Kings for delay of game.
Guess you can't cry over spilt milk but they were bad calls.
Maybe when the games start back in New York the referee's will wear red and black.
Anyway, congrats King's on 2-0, but the next two will be in the real home of cockroaches, NYC.
Watch out Kings.

Good luck. I want a 7 game series personally, 2 OT games so far is awesome.
Cheer up if anyone can get it done it's Lundqvist. He can shut the door like no one else. Quick is good for a couple softies a game IMO.
Rangers have to back-check and clear the zone better. And stay out of the box. Most of what they're doing is good enough to win.

Maybe it will hit me later but I don't see what your clip ^^^ has to do with last nights game and the failure to call goalie interference.
I watched the game with a friend who is a Kings fan, when we first saw it live I didn't think is was a foul, but he did. After watching the replay closely, we both thought (and the announcer) that it should have been called. Probably a reason I'm not a referee though.
I have to rally for some team and my favorite is out, so I'd like to see the Rangers get it since the Kimgs just had it a couple years ago. You know, spread it around a little.
: )
Edit.
From Lindquist:
Lundqvist said the play in question didn't warrant a goalie-interference penalty on King, but he thought the referee should have blown the play dead because of the incidental contact in the crease.
He complained that the officials called goalie interference on Rangers forward Benoit Pouliot in the second period for contact with Kings goalie Jonathan Quick, who was standing above the crease when the contact was made.
"Benny got pushed in and tried to avoid him and he gets two minutes, and the puck was not even there," Lundqvist said. "Then we have the same play and they score. I don't think it's a penalty, but you've got to stop the play if the goalie can't move in his crease. It's not like I'm outside the crease; I play pretty deep. Just be consistent with it."
So much for my career as a referee. Even Lindquist thinks it wasn't goalie interverence.

Refs are human, they drive us all crazy at some time but the conspiracy theories are nonsense.
Tough no-call on that goal but you put it behind you and get the next one.

I'm still not convinced the call was bad. Just because the announcers said so doesn't make it so. Lundquist said it wasn't interference but the play should have stopped. That's what he was incensed about on the ice. That's a much harder argument to defend. i'm certainly not an NHL official but I've watched a ton of games (major and minors, live and tv.) When I watch the replay I see Rangers #27 back aggressively into King, sending him hard into Lundguist. Did the Rangers player see the setup for the shot, or was it unintentional? I think the whole situation was too ambiguous to void the goal.

Best moment of the celebration was when the Kings' equipment assistant, who has Down's Syndrome,
hoisted The Cup - you've never seen a bigger smile. Later Kopitar had his arm around him
the whole time he was being interviewed by Roenick. Kopitar even brought him into the
conversation. That's why hockey players are so special and down to earth.

OK, I'm already beyond the Stoopidbowl. Most excellent game tonite between the Pens and
the Broad Street Bullies. Despite being a born and bred Blackhawk fan I've long had a secret
respect, if not more, for the Pens. Super Mario might be the greatest, after His Gordiness. I
also had the singular pleasure, to put it mildly, of playing a couple of games of chess with His Jaromirness. Dood was a trip - trash-talkin' mofo! Played a good game to back up the talk!
As you might expect he was all about his offense and, to put it discretely, left his defensemen

LA Kings have set some records the last few seasons. Three years ago they won the playoffs in the least number of games played. Last year against San Jose they won four in a row to get out from under a three game San Jose lead.
This season they became a member of a very small club, maybe five, who failed to make the playoffs the season after winning the cup. Ouch.

Pretty happy to see Duncan Keith getting the credit he deserves.
Great final game, great series, great playoffs, great season. Good job, Blackhawks! Hope we can team most of the squad together, but I'm sure there's gonna be a lot of salary cap demolition. If I'd had my 'druthers I'd try hard to keep Sharp but I don't think they can afford it. Definitely lose Bickell.

Ice hockey: RED ARMY
In the film Red Army, recounting the resentment he faced from North Americans following his move to the NHL, Fetisov cites the south-Boston born John Cunniff, his second coach with the Devils, as someone who wouldn’t even “look at Russians.”
“I don’t know specifically about Cunny, but there were a lot of old school coaches and players who were afraid of those guys coming over and ‘stealing’ jobs from North Americans,” Shanahan said. “But we also had a lot of younger guys like Kenny Daneyko and Kirk Muller who saw what he and Alex could do for us as a team.”
Jim Schoenfeld was Fetisov’s first NHL coach. He was also the coach who made Fetisov a healthy scratch for what would have been the defenseman’s 14th NHL game on Nov. 4, 1989, in Calgary. The game, a 7-3 New Jersey defeat, was televised in Russia.
The game also marked Schoenfeld’s last one behind the Devils’ bench, as he was fired two days later.
“No, I don’t think it was a coincidence that was my last game, but I also don’t believe that was the only reason,” Schoenfeld, in his eighth season as Rangers’ assistant general manager, told Slap Shots last week. “Of course I knew who he was, of course I knew the significance of what I was doing, and of course it was a hard call, but I thought he’d been beaten down and worn and needed a rest at that point.
“You could see he was a real elite player, but I don’t think Slava realized how good this league was and that he had to be in top shape in order to play at a highest level. Most importantly, the most physical players on the other teams were all targeting him and running roughshod over him.
“I had a long talk with Slava. He obviously wasn’t happy. But the times I’ve seen him since, he’s been friendly. If there’s animosity, he doesn’t show it.”
Fetisov played well for the Devils, but was never a difference maker. He re-ascended in Detroit with Scotty Bowman’s Russian Five that included Larionov, Sergei Fedorov, Slava Kozlov and Vladimir Konstantinov.
In New Jersey, Kasatonov was the better player.
“In Detroit, Slava was in a place where they all appreciated his style,” said Shanahan, a teammate for the 1997-98 consecutive Red Wing Cup championships. “It was a different environment.
“We were talking one time about his whole experience of leaving Russia and coming to New Jersey,” he said. “And Slava told me, ‘You know, it was so draining to try to get my freedom, it was such a grueling fight, I didn’t realize I was going to have another fight here.’ ”
The Great Fetisov.
The great “Red Army.”

I'm forcing myself to watch the Rangers loose to the Penguins.
I'm not impressed with the refs, on the go ahead goal #4 there was an obvious slashing, then a retaliatory trip sending the Penguins guy to his knees,
the announcer, play by play was saying - " going down to try to draw the penalty to hide the slash wasn't ... (Going to work ),,, before he got the 3 words out.....he said.."He scored!"
The front ref, behind the ranger net, had his hand up and looked at a Ranger defenseman as if to blow the whistle . . .but didn't.
Squared up the Ranger held up the Penguins then got to have a clear from his knees, have a clean step to throw the puck in front, it went off Rangers Skates left and right, then through the goalie, now before I've hit send and when I'm not through bitching, the Penguins have scored again 5 to 3 the final...
I wanted to say something about th stick play, slashing used to get called so did blatant Cross checks, and the crap of riding a stick high in an opponent's crotch, between the legs at the stoppage of play, that cause fights and is really a Penguins trade-mark. BS not to call it all game!
I hate that I'm at the top & bottom of this page a year apart but still explains the 20 lbs I need to shed....

I was hoping for the Sens to make it, but no. First time in 46 years. Habs' season was maybe the most impressive ... in terms of freefall. They came out so damn hot at the start!
As a Blackhawks fan, I've been having a tough time these last few weeks. Half of me wants these boys to go out first round and have some time to think, rest, and regroup. Let that fire build back up. And Keith's periodic slashes to folks' faces have really got to stop. So disappointing.

So, I take a pit stop & when I check the Idiot box I find A game Is on
Blackhawks Hosting the Bruins, 6 to 1 at the end of the 1st.
the Bruins have just scored 3 goals in 10 min, no team has ever come back from a 6-0 deficit
to win... that was what the man on the TV said?
so it is on between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Boston Bruins, a classic. . .
EDIT: the end of the game was a panic, Boston pulled their goalie with 2 min, but failed to notch another goal.

Please disregard whatever I said the other day. The Blackhawks are heating up at just the right time, and despite missing a ton of key players. 16 goals in the last 3 games, and Panarin on 11 of those! Kane and Toews have been huge too. Thursday night's game against the Blues will be an important test though.

No kidding. At this point given recent history, I'm uncomfortable with the Bluenotes playing the Little Sisters of the Poor in the first round of the playoffs. And the Blackhawks are certainly not that.
I guess we are going to get a good look at how that might go down tomorrow when the Blues and Hawks play in the last vestiges of the regular season.
Can't wait to hear the fans sing on Saturday night when they bring back the old tradition of serenading the team as they take the ice. Fond memories of my childhood and it was every bit as loud as the national anthem in Chicago.

That was a good game.
I especially liked the part where the Kings had 'em on their heels and their goalie suddenly had an "equipment malfunction." That was the best performance of that particular ploy I can recall seeing. Not only did Gibson spend a minute at the bench getting his skate adjusted but when he got back out to the crease he fell over like his blade broke off. So he left the ice and they had to helmet up and deploy their second guy. All in all that was about two time outs. :-)
Big win for the Kings.

Weird how things worked out for the Kings. The snatched defeat from the jaws of victory the other night by blowing a three nothing lead on the Jets only to lose 4-3 in a shootout. So when the Ducks won last night they took over as division leader with home ice advantage against the Predators.
But, the Kings now have home ice advantage over the Sharks. Somehow I'll bet they like that outcome. Kind of makes me wonder about losing that Jets game...

He has a legitimate case for one missed call late in that game, a tripping penalty on Andrew Shaw. However, you live by the sword and die by the sword and since Andrew Shaw is a known embellisher - he didn't get the call. So sad....I'll cry a tear later.

Now that a couple of days have gone by I'm still pissed at the early whistle - no goal call against Nashville. How does that happen in game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals!?
A tainted victory for sure. Not by the Penns, but by the ref.

Time for the NHL to wake up and completely BAN FIGHTING in hockey.
‘I Have No Idea How to Tell This Horror Story’
NOV. 21, 2017
John Branch, a sports reporter at The New York Times, has been in sporadic contact via text messaging and email with Walter Peat since writing about him and his son Stephen, a former N.H.L. player.
At the time of the article, in June 2016, Stephen Peat was 36 and experiencing debilitating headaches and violent mood swings. Peat was primarily an enforcer, a player designated to drop his gloves and square off in fist-to-fist combat with an opponent. The Peats presumed that Stephen’s problems were rooted in brain trauma sustained on the ice in so many fights.
Walter Peat, the head saw filer at a lumber mill in a suburb of Vancouver, British Columbia, gave The Times permission to publish the texts and emails he had sent John over the previous 18 months. Some have been trimmed for concision.
(Stephen disputes his father's accounts and said, “I am disappointed in my father since I once held him so high on a pedestal.”)

A lot of the time the fighting is stoopid but come playoff time it serves a purpose.
And for Buttman to say the fans don’t want to see it just tells me how out of touch he is,
the little limp-wristed twerp. If he ever played hockey it was with a broom and a whiffle ball.

Well, it's that time of year again. With Toronto-Boston running into each other in the first round and Winnipeg-Nashville looking likely in the second, there'll be some disappointed fans.
The Canadian Cup Drought Clock is at 24 years and Iiii don't know if this is the year, but you never know!

And Mr. Hocking - that goalie story is a riot. I'm surprised we don't hear about this thing happening more often. It might be unlikely, but people win the lottery all the time.

The Leafs are going to take the ice in two hours - I'm interested to see if they can split the first two games in Boston on Hockey Night in Canada. Naz is out for three games due to poor impulse control.
Winnipeg had a great party going off Portage Ave. last night
This year has had some good stories - for example Toronto and Winnipeg setting franchise records. But I'll take Vegas breaking out as frosh as the story of the year.

Hello hockey fans,
I'm a VGK fan and willing to accept defeat when fairly delivered, but last nights game was without a doubt the poorest officiating I have ever seen. If this is what it takes for the Caps to win then so be it, but to suggest that we've lost our mojo seems a little premature!
yes yes I know....down 3 to 1
Maybe Gerald should just unleash our hitters and see how that works out!
all in good fun,
peace,
Kenny

Actually the worst call I've ever seen was in a Detroit/LA 2014 game. On a Detroit shot the puck got deflected, sailed up and hit the netting, fell down and bounced off Quick's (LA goalie) back into the net and stood as a goal. It cost the Kings the game, but they went on to win the Cup.
That's also when I lost any respect I ever had for Babcock. He saw it, and if he had an ounce of character he would have said something. Instead he just stood there.

No team can have the home advantage more than the GK.
The Capitols want it and they have a few world class players.
If the GK hit less posts , could have been different .
I will say it again, there’s a lot of hockey left, teams don’t get this far and then fold their tents.

Alex Ovechkin deserved this Stanley Cup. 13 years of loyalty to the Caps and his sheer joy upon winning and hoisting the cup above his head was infectious. Won the Conn Smythe as well. One of the NHL's all time greats. That cup is going to have some serious fun in the off season. Kris -- 43 years since the team was founded and this is their first NHL championship. Love Ovi so much. Guy has so much heart and desire for the sport.

Good clean game and well reffed.
But what was up with that goofy cartoonish intro? That was embarrassing even by Vegas’ standards! I almost expected Roseanne to come out to sink the national anthem!

Had to look Dauphin up, despite it being Manitoba’s 8th ‘largest’ town, at 8500! LOL
Proud little place:
Lt.-Col. William George Barker, VC, Canada's most decorated serviceman, was born in Dauphin in 1894. The Dauphin airport and a school are named after him.
26% speak Ukrainian. Pretty funny for a place named for the bro of Louis XV. 😉

So curious minds wish to know:
1. Will the Washington Capitals - being pretty much the only 'winners' in that town at the moment - be invited to the president's palace, aka white house?
2. Being that probably half of them are Canadian, will they be searched for flammables before being allowed in?
3. Will the emperor require that they kneel before him, or allow them to stand?
4. Again, as more than half aren't citizens, why would they care if someone else's national anthem is played?

^^^RIP Stosh^^^ Legend...
Was lucky to see him play in the late 1970’s.
Ranger fans respected him immensely.
Even though he was a Hawk.
Edit: Was one of the first NHLer’s to wear a helmet,
after almost getting his ear ripped off by a puck in 1967.
True hard man Slovak.
Also he was a scratch golfer who became a club pro after
his NHL retirement.

Blues Sharks series is getting ugly. Blues dominate game 5 (5 to zip) and San Jose does what they do best when they're frustrated and beat.
Go Blues!
