Hey all,
gunna be in Yosemite Valley this weekend and was wondering if I should bring gear, is the fishin any good?
Is the Merced stocked in the Park?

Thanks in advance,
Tad

The Regs;

In Yosemite Valley and El Portal (Happy Isles to Foresta Bridge):
Rainbow trout are catch-and-release only.
Brown trout limit is five per day or ten in possession.
Only artificial lures or flies with barbless hooks may be used; bait fishing is prohibited.
Mirror Lake is considered a stream and is only open during stream fishing season.

Tad, they stopped stocking almost 40 years ago. Fishing is great in the Merced if you know what fly to use and how to present it. Like most streams this time of year, running fast and cold equals challenging but not impossible.
I would say good luck but it is all skill on the Merced in the Valley.

Ask Loyd (Lloyd Price). He showed me all the tiny #18 midges and such back in the early 80s when Delhi Dog and I worked at the Valley sport shop.

EDIt. Tad, if you are passing through Chico drop by and I'll give you a few Valley Specials. I'm right off 99 and I don't work Fridays so will be home if you text. Take a dip in our pool or across the street at pool in Bidwell Park.

Nice photos Johnkelly and Brian! Good luck in Yose Tad. Last fall, on the way home from the east side, Macronut and I slayed em just outside the park entrance.......just pulled over out of curiosity and scrambled down the steep embankment/hillside abou a mile up river from El Portal. All we had handy was.......shhhhh......spinners.....but we killed em down in there for about an hour joyously boulder hopping from pool to pool.

It was a fun surprise having been in The Valley for decade without ever wetting a line or thinking trout.

Good stuff here. Nice fish everyone. Iíve fished right where you are talking Micro. In late summer you drop in just below the park entrance in EP and pool hop up river as far as you want. It can be a challenge to get out and up to the road the further you go up.

Some slick boulder problems in that riverbed when you want to move up a pool and ya have to do some bouldering to get there. I think the late summer on that section is perfect for tenkara. You have to do some shenanigans down in there and it would be nice to have both hands.
Iíve heard talk that the streams pouring into the valley have some fishing in them but not stocked in a long time. Iíve seen fish standing on the bridge in EC meadows before.

Might hit the east walker Saturday. Stimbo you around?

On Saturday I will be in the Valley for the big memorial service but on Sunday I was planning to hit the EW on my way home. Will you still be around?

Stimbo I wonít unfortunately. Letís hook up though and plan a weekend down there.

I have to get my act together and tie a bunch of flies for a Kauai trip in the next few weeks. I loaned Amy bone fish box to a buddy and well he put it in a bag with an aresole sun screen that well basically discharged its entire contents into a box of 200 flies. At least they wonít get sun burned but they smell like a can of sunscreen now and thatís not good. This is the year I hold a Hawaiian bone fish. Iíve put in a lot days on Annini and well Iíve seen a few but they are always 10 feet away when I finally see them. Also hoping to get some shots on some blue trevally that will come up on that flat. Iíve never fished it in June when the water is a little warmer. So Iím hoping that helps.

I would like to get you to join me for some lower sac drift time if you arenít too busy guiding.
Let me know if you have a weekend in July. Iím booked until after I get back from the island.
Let me know.

Hope all you fisherman are getting on some fish and thanks for sharing your pictures.

Hey Tad,

We were gonna fish the Merced after the memorial but the flows were on the high side so we bailed and headed home, fishing the East Walker instead, which was killer.

And BTW, we were camped just below you in Yellow Pines. We had the white Toyota truck.
