^what is a typical distance/vertical/trail roughness for those competitive trail runs John?

blasted out this little ditty the other day. 4.1k' gain and 46 miles. cool to look down at my alma lapis, Greyrock, from the high pass.

Yunno, tbc, that was the first realz Trail Race, I've ever done. It was 10Kish. I did a 20 miler, that Athlinks considers a Trail Race two years ago, but it was a Canal Towpath.

I have been splitting my time between grueling hikes and longer races. Finished the Smith Rock Ascent 41 minutes faster than 2 years ago on a perfect day. Next, I managed to take second place overall in an obscure 1/2 marathon. Beat several ladies much younger than I. I will be doing the Olympic Discovery 1/2 Marathon next weekend. That should be a treat for the eyes.

I did not get my bike on the road yet. I wanted to do that before June 1st.

My daughter is coming in the fall and needs to lose some weight. I promised her a fabulous overnight hike to give her a goal. Here is the camp site for day 1

There is a fine line between necessary rest and being lazy. I hope I am on the right side of it!

Knots in my gut. Less than three weeks to the Bighorn Trail Run. Even though I'm only doing the 30k, it is far longer than any thing I've ever done. I'm pretty excited about my improved cardio over the last 6 months. The race really is secondary.

Once I finish, I think I'll try this challenge:

Always good to take it easy so you won't be too tired, when resting up for your nap!

Sunday: Nine mile trail run, followed by guiding a canyon
Monday: another canyon
Tuesday: 21 mile mtn bike ride,
Today; car repair related bike ride and bike work commute, coming up in the PM another canyon...

Three races last month. The first HM, was terrible, but the HM a week later, I PR'd. Go figure. Two weeks after that, I bombed in a 10K. Three days of hiking in the 'dacks, just done.

10 days to go until the BHTR.

Ran 5 miles up Tongue River canyon and 5.6 miles down. How does that add up? I dunno ask Nike+.

Felt pretty good for being a fat and apprehensive about the 30k.

Moto 2 times a week and MTB 3. I've been pullin plastic in the early AM 1 or 2 times a week cuz I need to micro-ly maintain contact strength in case my buddy(hopefully) drags me to the crag..

Moto after work ride is a fast mob on the local tech for 2.5-3hrs.
Moto weekend ride is longer and more exploratory and more difficult trails. 4+hrs All my moto is singletrack, no roads or track as I am scared of each for different reasons.

Took the last month off the mtb to focus on moto but will be back to the mtb a bit more now.

The mtb will get more love as my main riding partner is out with an injury. A good BC-moto partner is akin to a good climbing partner. Kinda hard to find someone that is ok with lifting bikes over logs for hours(ok, many minutes!) and whatnot and going somewhere in a not-knowing much about it state of mind..

Anyway, I am at my target weight and loving the moto and non-moto wheeled traveling recreation...wait, isn't this a climbing website?!?

9300' to 11120'. 20 mi out and back on Red Mtn Pass. Just over an hour up and sub 20 mins down. Faster than traffic, dawgie.

Fall-time, amigo, fall-time. The heat-man is here. I showed up in the deserrrp Johnny-not-on-the-spot wrt heat. Still though, indolence pays, and all.

Aerobic work outs are now on hold. Fell off my bike in downtown Portland at dusk on our Wednesday night rides. I was last in line and just mounting the carbon fiber steed. Even though I was barely moving, I must have hit something and went over onto my shoulder. I got back on and rode in the darkness a few miles back to the office. It was tough wrestling the bike into the car for the long ride home. I told my husband that I might need an x ray in the morning. One look at me, and he insisted we go that night. Yep. Broken collar bone. A consult with the bone fracture clinic and they convinced me that I could not take my Africa trip this week, just days after the fall. and I have to cease jostling for a while. With any luck, I will be able to take my daughter back packing in October. I am confined to trails with good footing on nicely paved roads. Managed to hike up Coldwater Peak in the Mount Margaret Back Country out of Johnston Ridge. Some exposure but excellent footing. Normally, I wouldn't pick such a moderate hike so far from the house. I'll admit, it was a nice sampler of the features and beauty of the blast zone.

On a Thursday in late July I saw my acupuncturist for my weekly visit and told her of my plans to hike to 13,000 feet in Toulumne Meadows in Yosemite, then drive to Colorado to hike to 14,000 feet. She put two extra needles by my upper lip to help my blood thin. Who knows what else she did to help me. I drove the next day to Toulumne on Friday from sea level. I hiked up Dana Peak from 10,000 to 13,000 feet the following day, Saturday, slowly, but with ease.

I have been going to Toulumne for over thirty years, from sea level to a base of 8,500 feet. Every time before it has taken me at least two days to acclimate. The third day I began to feel normal. But not this time.

I did not expect to be able to hike all the way up to 13,000 feet on the first day after leaving sea level. There are years that my physical condition was just as good, or frequently much better and yet I had much more trouble acclimating.

I can only credit the acupuncture treatment for my surprise ascent. My legs were admittedly very tired the next day, Sunday. On Monday I had one of my best days ever of friction climbing on the back and front of Lembert Dome.

Then I drove to Colorado. My hike in Colorado up Quandary Peak (five days after Dana Peak) from 10,500 to 14,000 feet up Quandary Peak (east ridge, 13.5 miles RT) was quite easy and my legs were fine for climbing the next two days in Eleven Mile Canyon in Colorado. Then I drove back to Toulumne for a day of crack climbing before going home.

I have no doubt many of you can all of the above easily, but you probably aren't age 61. I can't explain what my acupuncturist does, but she sure keeps me going.

wow, Seamstress, that's rough. Killing an Africa trip ouch ouch. ZOMG

I've become convinced, cycling isn't - overall - healthy. The training benefit, is outweighed by the damage. I still ride, but not simply for training now. More running.

Yesterday, I pulled my race wheels offa my CX and put on the wheels with heavy City tyres. Commuting is about it for me these days.

Life, some hiking in the Presis, and I haven't run in 8 days. That will change tomorrow. The Fifth Avenue mile, a 10 mile race and an HM upcoming.

Oh Seamstress. I always look so forward to your posts. You always inspire me.
Shitty luck on that fall. One of my biggest fears on my road bike is a broken collarbone.
