4-pass loop running around the Maroon Bells out of Aspen.

Did something just over 30 miles in about 12 hours. Was going pretty slow. There were some people out there flying!

I think Anton holds the FKT of just over 4 hours

Trying to mix it up with some different activities.

Big hooks, check.

Dead bait, not as much fun as supertopo but it will do.

Fish heads and conch.

40 mins of high excitement then Snarf!

Six foot black tip tagged for the NOAA.

Pulling hooks, say AHHHH!

Wrestling back to sea.

Then letting her go to fight another day.

It was a character building day, the kind when you don't want to do your scheduled work out. Got my 8 hilly miles in with low enthusiasm. But it is done. I can eat dinner guilt-free.

Did 435 miles on the road bike last week (Mon-Sun).

Gonna tone it down a bit this week, but still shooting for 300+ miles, riding every day.

XC ski stuff is in full swing with its amazing menu of activities; running, bouldering, rollerskiing, hiking, paddling, and on...

... as the summer heat decreases, the muscles begin to behave better and can take more activity. Now I got to get ready for a fall climbing trip and will ramp up the bouldering.

I used my aerobic exercise tracking software, for a climbing situation, with interesting results.
I ran map my run, on my iPhone on a car to summit solo of the route Tad,5.7 on Devil's Tower ( see Blitzo thread).
It worked fine, overall especially on the approach. It got confused on the climb itself though, not sure how the GPS likes vertical rock. When you click on the link below it shows a Lot of squiggles and backtracking, which was not, how the climb went. Weird! For extra fun click on the "3D flyover" function, and be sure to have an air sickness bag at hand!

Rode my road bike every day for two weeks totaling 886 miles doing a Strava challenge.

The first week I did 435 miles, the second week I did 451.

Quite unexpectedly, I finished 36th overall, and 10th in the USA (click for full size):

Before yesterday's final ride, I did a 2.6 mile trail run as a warmup, since the 1/4 mile driveway I had to climb to start the ride averages 20.9%, and the final few hundred feet are 25%! (on a road bike with 34 X 27 low gear).

Looking forward to 2 days off the bike!

Looking forward to 2 days off the bike!

You must have a GREAT saddle! Awesome job HK! Don't think my bottom could hold up to that thrashing!....or the legs, knees, lungs, etc etc
WTF kind of grades are those??????? Crazeeeeeeeee

Neat stats....I like Strava and I also use the Garmin connect stuff.

Jay, I always wondered what a climb would look like on the GPS software.

Well time to go do sumthin'

Sitting here in Downieville, and its raining hard. We need the rain, so on one hand I am happy for it, on the other hand....my bike is stashed on top of Yuba Pass, and I am super psyched for a 35k classic roller ski with 3,800ft of steady smooth pavement uphill. As a fire smoke refugee I have happily discovered the Yuba Pass/Sierra Buttes region for training the last few days.

I have had a great summer of focused aerobic capacity training for XC racing. Last spring I entered a race series well above my middle age speed...but it got me inspired and I re-connected with a former Salomon/Fischer marathon teammate, Scott Johnston, who is now one of the top nordic coaches in the US. Scott is also a climber and has been Steve House's coach for some years. Look for a new book on training they just co-wrote and sent off to the publisher, due out early next spring. Scott generously offered to help me out with some training knowledge and coaching at a distance, and I am feeling great results so far. Been doing a combo of weight lifting, lots of trail running, roller skiing, a bit of cycling. I have never trained with such focus and consistency before. Not climbing nearly as much as last year, but I do feel strong when I do.

Last weekend was fun, Roller-skied from Lee Vining to top of Tioga Pass, then the next day climbed the Rostrum with my son Braden. Might have been better with a rest day in between, but we pulled it off! With some struggle, and I was worked for a few days after.

Some longer aerobic highlights of the summer have been Donner Summit to Squaw run (3:18), full east-west traverse of Castle Peak (2:45), Squaw Mt. run race (brutal 44:18, puked at the finish after good final sprint), Stinson Beach to East summit of Mt.Tam and back (3:25).

Starting to shift into more specific strength, hill bounding, uphill double pole, and speed work...and very psyched for a big winter of racing!
