Eastman: How dare you besmirch the region with such a broad brush? Some nights aren't that dark.

Irisharehere, all the better, the best BC ski glade [all birches] in the peaks starts at the bottom of Big Slide and skis all the way down Johns Brook past the Brothers, just saying.

Enjoy either way!

I'm strictly a snowshoe type (on the descent anyways). Never comfy enough on skis to go off-piste....

You don't need rock skis for all that snow. You just needs some good turns is all.

If you ski the BC in New York State, you have to own a quiver.

I do own 3 pair of bonfide "Rock" skis.

And a few for bottomless days,as well.

A story from 61 or 62 I have told before. OK because no one remembers.

I had snowshoed up to the range trail from JBL. I should have guessed something was afoot the first night when ice was exploding the trees. When almost to the ridge the snow began to come down in sheets. As I was alone continuing was not worth the risk. When I got back down to the trail to JBL I ran into three folks from IBM Watson Lab. It was a good thing I ran into them as four feet of snow fell that night. Alone it would have taken days for me to break a trail out. We could hardly see our cars at the Garden so I hoofed it down to the pub where I asked if anyone had a dozer. Three shakes of a lamb's tail and I was riding on the drawbar heading back up to my car.

At least fifty college students headed for Winter Mountaineering school showed up as soon as the Garden was plowed out and frantically began heading off into the blackness through the drifts and sheets of snow. The dozer operator looked at me and asked what was going on. I said, Oh. It's nothing. They are all crazy.

As I was saying goodbye to my new friends one of the guys noticed a cute coed down in the snow trying to get her Kelty on. He said, Hold on a minute" and walked over to help her. A minute later he came back saying, "I couldn't lift her pack."

There ain't no place like home.
