It looks like Mt. Williamson seasonal restrictions are/will soon be revoked.

Dear Williamson Climbers

Many of you expressed concern of the continued closure for the Mt Williamson zoological area. In working with the Bighorn Sheep recovery team of scientists, and Forest Service wildlife biologists, the Inyo National Forest proposed to the public that we would no longer manage the area with those special restrictions. No issues were generated in the public involvement process, and with the agreement of the scientific team working for the animals recovery, we will not reinstitute those restrictions.

EDIT: Props to The Chief and others who took this on by the twin Horns.

I thought frogs were the issue.

Inyo National Forest?

Are we sure this is the same Mt Williamson?

looking sketchy there...

Mt. Williamson (in the Sierra Nevada) is not Williamson Rock (in the San Gabriel Mts.).

Too bad it isn't Williamson Rock.

Yeah, Mt. Williamson in the Sierra. Sorry about the ambiguity.

The Chief, or Scully, has been really involved with the rescission and could likely provide lots of details. I guess climbing Williamson is going to get a lot easier.

And yes, I still call Williamson Rock "Mt. Williamson."

Actually that is great to know. A late summer - fall trip up there would be nice. Mt. Williamson is a proud mountain with three distinctly separate summits over 14K ft. The North East Ridge is huge, the North (long twisting) Rib is a great climb and Williamson Bowl is a wild place dominated by the East Face of another 14er, Mt. Tyndall.

Here's a couple pictures from an ascent of the Long Twistin Rib on the N Face.

Bonus points if you can name my partner that day...

Ding! That was fast. If we ever meet up I'll buy ya a beer...

Can you get a permit for George Creek after mid-May?

One way to find out. I'm going to ask for one for late Aug for Williamson Bowl.

Apparently so when the Big Horn Sheep restrictions are removed. The email I got from the Feds states
…we will not reinstitute those [Big Horn Sheep] restrictions.

I do not know the effective date of the rescission. Will advise. As long as the herd is protected, I am VERY happy that Mt. Williamson will have year-round access.

I've been complaining about the closure for years. The sheep are all down around Langley and up behind Morrisson.

I think The Chief put a lot into this. All I ever did was whine... ;-)

edit: TGT, the East and West Horns are a lot harder to get on than the main summit. Chelsea and I got the West Horn and skipped the real summit due to incoming lightning. We were afraid of getting fried.

So how was that long twisting rib?

It looks good.

If I were to pick a route to climb the peak by, would you recommend this one?

My tolerance for loose rock has diminished since I had a kid.

Only make's 'em more desirable

That summit plateau is big enough and flat enough for a soccer pitch.

Huge!

I'm just upset that the NFS didn't know how to use BCC in the announcement email...

Great news. We owe a very big thank you to all who helped bring this about.

Now, if only I could get in shape for that Northeast Ridge!
