PDL aka Pakistani Death Loop is when you are short fixing and don't put yourself on self belay. So in other words you get to the anchor, pull all the slack up, and climb with a big old death loop of slack!!!

There was a question in another thread about how you go from self-belay to being on belay again, and I didn't see an answer. What do monkeys do when they're sending - just clip in to a couple of good pieces and take the rope out of the self belay, so the belayer can pull in the slack, or do they feed it though their belay device (seems difficult/slow)?

WE RUN PDL AND DON'T USE SELF BELAY - THE MONKEYS ARE SENDING!!!! hahahaha

Someone more experienced than me should give you more info, but the few times I have done it, if I'm standing on a bomber piece I'll just take myself off the self belay (momentary PDL bad ass haha)and have your partner pull in the slack. I've never done it on anything "hard" so I can't speak for that.

To answer your question mcreel: if I'm on a bomber peice then I take myself off belay and have my partner pull in the slack from his/her device. Sometimes I'll wait if it looks like I can get to better gear before doing this. If it's all sketch, then I feed the rope through my device as my partner is pulling slack from theirs.

If it's bomber the whole way I'll run the PDL.

If you're fast enough there shouldn't be too much rope left, anyway. My goal is to always get to the end of the rope so I can yell (encourage) at my partner, hahaa!
