Got to talk to an old friend yesterday and it had been years...Man they are moving fast! It seemed like yesterday when we all lived in the Monument finding a FA nearly daily. Paul was one of my friends that sought futuristic lines established within our ethically limited confines , for me just back from Verdon, where futuristic climbs were being done but with pre-placed protection, and climbing at Smith where they were following that trend, I was inspired that he adhered to this ethic strengthened by our friend JB. His routes are still testpieces to this day and as well as being one of the better guitar players I've had the pleasure to play with, he's a stunt man, adventurer, and I wanted to give a shout for Paul Borne!! :)

Paul has an eye for a line. Take Misfits for example. Everyone walked right by there for years. We climbed to the left of it, we climbed across from it. Paul realized the line, and a good one it is.

Here Reid Malinbaum sizes up the moves into the shallow alcove:

Hey Watusi -

I’m sure you’ll think this is a bit random (and sorry everyone, I’m only a gym wall rock climber) but I was googling around a few days ago, and found your comments on Paul Borne. Paul and I dated for a while in 1982-83. We kept in touch for quite a few years but lost touch after I moved to Australia with my boyfriend (now husband) in 1990.

I have great memories of Paul – I went with him to Joshua Tree a few times (with his bandana-wearing dog), listened to him practice his guitar at home (he still lived at home,in Orange I think, and he worked as a drywaller). He introduced me to Peter Gabriel’s music - I’m ever thankful for that one (took a bit of doing – Peter’s “Security” album was quite strange for someone who was into Journey and Def Leppard).

I would love to get in touch with him again (no hidden agendas, still happily married in Australia). Could you let him know my details please?

Julia Eyles (he knew me as "Julie Bend" back then)

Tell him I said “I miss your mug” and he should know it's really me.

Thanks for your help, and if he chooses not to get in contact, no worries.

Misfits is excellent, I'd say 3 stars out of 5. Really fun movement, quite memorable. The top out though is difficult and insecure on sloping grain, but is probably not the crux. Definitely put it on your list.

Yep Misfits is good and sustained climbing, all the way to the anchors!

I remember many mornings in Hidden Valley campground, watching Paul soloing everything insight...in just a few minutes! He would run from climb to climb, then climb at breakneck speed with his headphones on. Really friendly guy too.

Paul was a true fixture of the So-cal scene back in the late 1980's & early 90's. I fondly recall some fun times we had out at Suicide Rocks & Joshua tree.

I ran into him a few years ago at one of the reunion parties & he looked well. He was always a nice, affable person, and alot of fun th hang out with, which is not as common as one might think.

I was always fond of his routes on the Sentinel formation in Hidden Valley, like Chameleon, the one to the right of Illusion Dweller. Sparse bolting made for some exciting moves getting into the upper crack. I recall some big name, neathanderthal dudes( no names to protect the innocent) taking 50' falls up there!

He is a force to be reckoned with.

That bandana wearing dogs' name was Wylie. I used to climb with Paul in 85 when I first moved to Socal. He's the guy that taught me to slackline there in Hidden Valley campground.

I practiced that until I could go anywhere on that thing at will and one day had to quit when this guy pulled up in a park rangers jeep and said;
"remove the webbing from the Joshua Tree!" HAHA

Between him and John Bachar I picked up a lot of pointers about everything from concentration to preventing tendonitis. I miss that part of my life. I pretty much quit climbing in 87 or so after I healed up from a fall, just bouldering some after that.

I was soloing one day on a climb I'd done many times roped and unroped before in Hidden Valley and nearly finishing the climb a chunk of granite; a bomber hold broke off in my hand. I threw it down and fell, landing on my feet at the bottom of the Pinched Rib. I'm the guy that turned that climb from a 5.8 to a 5.10 in a nano second. That was December 1st 1985.

11 broken bones and 2 months in the hospital took the starch out of me but I climbed as soon as my strength came back just to get back on the horse so to speak. Life took me deep into aviation and I no longer climb but I think about it way too much.

I hope Paul is doing well. I was looking through some old Josh pics and saw one of him and decided to google him and see what he was up to these days. Happy trails, Tim Wells

Hey - you mentioned Paul Bourne... I am not sure if it is the same Paul Bourne, but I have a feeling it is. He was paragliding today at Soboba outside of Hemet, CA - and he died. He had a frontal collapse, right side deflation, then went into a spiral. Before coming out of it he hit the power lines. The power lines arced, burning his lines, and he free fell 60 or 70 feet into the rocks on the mountainside. He lived for about 25 minutes or so after the fall, but the internal bleeding was too much. The wind was totally cross at Soboba today - and no one else was in the air or even trying. Two other guys were up there near launch with him, and immediately hiked to his side, and then paramedics got there via helicopter - but almost as soon as they arrived, he died. Again, it could be a different Paul Bourne - but I searched his name out with 'stuntman'...

I worked for Paul Borne for a few weeks last year.
Had a great time reminiscing about Josh and the SoCal scene in the 80's.
To call him a character would be the most oblique of euphemisms.
Paul spoke of his love for paragliding, falcons and all things adventurous.
If this story's true, it's a real bummer.

Edit, spelling correction on Paul's last name.

These threads really hit hard, one minute you are reliving some great climbing history, then like a sucker punch another soul is taken, way too soon. I saw Paul in JT regularily, I was noob in 86, we were in awe of his climbing. I distinctly remember watching him solo something on the left side of Echo Cove. We could only shake our heads and laugh at whatever the hell we were flailing on at the time. My condolences to Pauls family and friends. Next trip to JT I will make it a point to get on one of his climbs, if I can find one I can do.

It seems to me like the world is spinning backwards the last few weeks - there has been so much bad news in my circle of friends and family.

Paul was never a close friend but we climbed together some and saw each other a lot in Joshua Tree and Idyllwild. I spent at least a decade with some of his routes there on my regular circuit.

Misfits
Solo Dog
Chameleon
Stand and Deliver
Rap Bolters are Weak
etc.

I think I did the 2nd lead of his Games Without Frontiers but I can't say that was "circuit." More like a one timer.

I said upthread before this awful news that Paul had an eye for a route. I want to elaborate a bit. He found and established beautiful routes which were right in front of all of us for years.

A lot of the best climbing I have done in Joshua Tree was the result of Paul Borne's creative and uniquely insightful approach to finding the best new climbs at a time when most of us thought all the cherries were picked.

Thanks Paul!!

I'm so sad they've passed, but happy they were living life to the fullest, right to the end. Living the spirit of the phrase, "Everyone's going to die, but few have truly lived."

Die early= truly lived

OK.
So we have a population problem. We can solve that problem AND assure everyone "truly lived".
Truly living is the ultimate goal. Right?

We all just jump off El Cap with no chute.

What am I missing here?

Edit:
When there is a terrible event we very often see it raised as a positive that the person truly lived. Indeed even more generally we see a parallel drawn between risk taking and living fully, whatever that means. At a memorial for John Bachar in C4 I raised the point that until each of us reaches the end we cannot know what wonderful things we will accomplish. I said John's most important work was yet ahead of him.

This alone is reason enough for us to "complete our route." Paul clearly held promise of even greater things. So the loss is great.

Great enough to cause one to push back against flawed thinking repeated over and over again. Lest we begin to believe it.

Both Shady and I have deleted the two posts wherein we exchanged views. Hopefully the both of us feel we successfully expressed our approach to risk taking. If a person is determined to do something, they have their health and have not sustained a limiting injury, they can accomplish a lot using their years of life. Risk taking carries with it huge potential for real loss. Loss affecting us all.

Now I would like to deal with T2's presumption that Paul and I "had a problem."

Paul, and T2 for that matter may have believed that highly emotional expression increases one's effectiveness. Either that or it was just a mannerism. Whatever the cause it makes no difference. A thoughtful person ignores emotion. They quite simply refuse to react to it. The ability to do this is an amazing tool. Well worth the effort it takes to develop it.

The underlying problem that affects everyone is the only thing deserving of one's attention.

Paul's death is very sad. Sad enough to cause one to try and do something about it.
