Some are organized gangs, not just taking a few plants, but 10s of thousands of Dudleya plants. So, some rich guy in China is making money ripping off our coast. They are coming to the country, apparently intending to commit crimes. So, it seems like they lie on their tourist visas, steal plants, steal plants from state and national parks, commit fraud, and lie to federal agents. They have no ties to the community. The jail time is suspended if they don’t come back. Later, foreign national(s?) (more a Mom and Pop operation) with ties to the community were fined and jailed for a short time, but not deported. What are the native bees, hummingbirds and other pollinators supposed to do when 100,000s plants disappear over the range of several counties. What about the rabbits, mice, insects and the small birds, raptors, and owls that eat the things that eat or pollinate the Dudleya? And stripping the area increases coastal erosion near coastal roads.
Most of the plants they have been taking will die in the windowsills in China and Korea where the plants are headed.
