HohMahn. . . remember when he drove a 914 Porsche on stage (JohhnyCarson) and just sat there beeping the horn. . . then got out, walked up to the mic and said. . . "Yeah. . . I'm a honky!"

:-)

HILARIOUS!

Richard Pryor. Some people will argue Lenny Bruce for the influence he had. Or Bill Cosby...

Now, "funniest person" is a different matter. Then I go with Peter Cook.

Agree with all mentioned classics. Just watched Dynamite Chicken and Sunset Strip the other day. David Cross is pretty good, if you pick the right one to watch. Louis CK is one ive gotten into lately, he's great. The comedians of comedy group is pretty good too, but lots lots of sucker vids out there. Zach Galifinkkkiiittiits live at the purple onion is real good if you like him. Sarah Silverman, she makes my belly yuk and my donger longer.

Yes, Louis CK. His "suck a bag of dicks" bit had me going. "What am I supposed to do, lick the bag?"

And Sarah Silverman's "Jesus is Magic" is a real favourite.

Don Rickles and George are right there but I have to give the nod to Lenny Bruce
although it could be argued that he wasn't a comedian.

"The only honest art form is laughter, comedy.
You can't fake it... try to fake three laughs in an hour - ha ha ha ha ha -
they'll take you away, man. You can't."

Lenny Bruce

I've this entire schtick on LP so imagine my delight to find the punch line on YouTube!
This is one of his best. He's going on about 'mixed marriages' or bigotry if you will: (it is only 50 seconds)

Okay so I LOVE Andy Kaufman and Bill Hicks .....sadly both RIP.

Kaufman for his total obtuse stuff. Would have made a brillian Cirque du Soleil clown in the manner of John Gilkey - who isn't a stand up comedian but one of the most physically hilarious people I've ever had the honour to watch perform.

Hicks because he was just laff-out-loud hilarious.

Andy K. was brilliant but many performances were beyond the audiences comprehension....and lost on small minded individuals expecting him to do the "Norm", of which he only did once and quickly moved forward to stuff beyond that.
As a comedian he had small appeal but as a satirical commentator on the world at large we our still learning from him.

2nd for Kinneson. All the best comics it seemed came out of Boston. Was a trial by fire if you will.

Of course its sort of a silly debate, because it depends on what style of humor you have. I really don't find certain comedians funny, while others that are largely regarded as not being all that great I eat up because they resonate with my line of thinking (which is a f*#ked up one).

For that reason, Joe Rogan and Stephen Lynch always make me laugh. Maybe because it feels like someone else shares my phukked up sense of humor.

warning - obscene and funny to other 12 year olds.

I wouldn't put Andy Kaufman up against Carlin or Hicks. I used to see his performances on SNL back in the day and while we laughed at them, they just really weren't that clever in my opinion. He was different, but not in a way I really cared much for.

Izzard is really good. I've only seen his routines on the Spanish Inquisition and cake or death. Great stuff.

But my favorite is Richard Pryor, just above Carlin. Pryor just had a great attitude. I got "That Nigger's Crazy" on an 8-track for Christmas along with a clock radio that would play it. Ha ha ha. Good times.

I like what little I have seen of Louis CK, too. So many good comedians out there.

i just had some stand up and then sid town
comedy in my shed about

is 5 am too early to jack-hammer?
apparently so,
according to my elderly
phd ex-l.a. neighbor.

i had the doors and windows closed,
and here i go hammering a hole
thru a rock, standing shirtless in my
plywood tub filled with water,

tat-tat-tat....

here comes don,
in his jammies rapping on my door,
with the sleepy-what-the-f*#k look in his
well-scene eyes.

so i get out of the tub,
my converse squelching
fine-filled water,
and we sit down.

i offer him a beer,
he declines and says mayber later.

we chat, and he never gets to scolding me,
instead he's curious at my endeavor,
so i tell him the product will
land on his granite counters,
gently of course
and with small oak feet.

he stayed over an hour
and then walked home in the
dawn twilight
with a new story on his tongue
and even more curious admiration
of his swash-buckler though educated neighbor.

Well, there are some great ones listed upthread. How we get 75 posts and no one noting Bob Hope, who was THE top comedian, stand up or otherwise, for most of his long life, I find unusual. Chris Rock is another great one, also not observed by anyone else.

Kind of like Basketball. Everyone forgot about Wilt being the best basketball player who ever lived....Jordan they all said (when Jordon was playing). Now that is claimed less and less frequently. Soon, Jordan will also be but a footnote.
