Another option is to upload it as a torrent... save yourself the trouble of inserting all those DVD's... save on shipping... etc?

This is indeed a very efficient way to do it. All Steve would have to do would be to send to one person via Skype or iMessage (no size limits on attachments), and then that person could create a torrent file from it and distribute it via Bit Torrent. I'm pretty sure you can torrent without having to upload the torrent file to a tracker site, or at least you could with the Azureus Bit Torrent client last I checked.

Duplicating DVD's and snail-mailing them is painfully inefficient, as I found out when I duplicated and sent all those Bachar TV show videos that our very own ST forum member Thedogfather graciously shared with us years ago. And although the total cost only amounted to approx. $2.50 each, I didn't get so much as a thank you for at least half of the ones I mailed out (you know who you are!), never mind the postage...[/rant]

If you wanted to make hard-copy duplicates of the DVD, Mac OS X's Disk Utility (Utilities folder) will do the job nicely:

I think the best format to distribute copies of the DVD digitally would probably be MPEG-4 (.mp4), as this the gives the best quality/size ratio in a format that doesn't require a special program like VLC Media Player to play, such as Matroska (aka .mkv), etc. This is also what YouTube uses for their non-Flash videos.

Another option would be to upload at full-quality to YouTube (up to 1080p) after converting to MPEG-4:

From YouTube:

Upload videos longer than 15 minutes (this might knott be necessary, depending on your account).

Here's how to convert a DVD to MPEG-4 on a Mac using the freeware Handbrake:

http://www.macworld.com/article/1157590/how_to_rip_dvd_handbrake.html

I would encode at the highest possible setting (at least 720p).

Thanks to all for the suggestions. Clearly doing this all in the digital domain is ideal though I don't know if it's possible since I no longer have the source file or master any longer. All I have is a finished DVD copy complete with a menu structure. For whatever reason it will not play in the Mac DVD player (message says that the DVDs is empty). It plays fine on a regular DVD player. I'm told I can't use disk utility because it needs to UDF format which it is not.

Again, if the digital methodology won't work I don't have a problem burning copies and sending them out in exchange for payment to cover my costs (my time is free).

Further suggestions are appreciated.

If you can send me a DVD, I will see if I can convert it using Handbrake on my 3rd-party DVD drive - the one I used to convert the original DVD that Thedogfather made and sent me of the vintage Bachar TV-show segments. Incidentally, I used UDF format on the duplicates I sent out to make them universally playable. One way or another I'll get it figured out. But if all else fails, I would be happy to help duplicating and snail-mailing them. I would recommend getting the modest costs covered up front (blank DVD, envelope, postage - approx. $3) via Paypal. Check your email...

BTW, you rock!

I'd say at least 5 bucks including the effort...don't do it or free, your time is worth something and there will be hassles involved. We can afford the extra few bucks. I want one...and I will pay more whether you ask for it or not...because I think whoever does the work deserves it.

Ok, I've worked thru this and finally uploaded the video to youtube. Special thanks to Steve Dawson for helping me get out of the VHS world of the 90's and enter into the digital world. The quality is not great but good enough to view on the computer. If I get enough interest I've sorted out the best way to create hard copies from the one copy I have with the least hassle....but only if the interest is overwhelming.

Honestly after watching it again the video brings back lots of memories of a simpler time in my life. Still, the video is crude when compared to all the slick bouldering that have come out since. Enjoy!

That is what makes it so good... more climbing spirit, less artsy camera effects/crap.

You know you've been climbing too long when WCP is considered a hoary oldschool classic! Seems to me it came out yesterday. I'm a Cali boi at heart, and I loved that video. Still have my VHS copy.
