We found the thumb @ the base. They flew it to San Fran. They attached it and is in hospital for the next week plus. Will post photos when I get home.
He slipped on a bannana peel on lead.
Was on the Nose route Thumbing around.

I hope they had a car to get themselves to the hospital, because hitch-hiking would have been out of the question.

Here's a story I heard from quite a long while ago. The leader is on the right ski track (Tahquitz) and has run it out a fair amount and is getting quite gripped. He makes it to a fixed piton, but is too pumped to clip in, and so puts his thumb in the eye when his feet pop. Needless to say, the thumb comes right off. Can anyone verify this story?

"The little feature in the middle of the "don't skate mate" pitch which is shown as expanding in the supertopo is not expanding any more because it fell off last tuesday when I weighted it. It cut off my left ringfinger, bad luck."
Found that in the Sea of Dreams beta on this site... classic!

I've met several climbers with damaged or missing finger tips, from getting them caught in piton or bolt holes. Only one with a damaged thumb, from a saw.

Any photos of the thumb by itself. Or of the stump. I know... but I'd like to see 'em.

if you want to lose a thumb, give up climbing and take up wrangling. up and down the rio grande valley in texas, it's a mark of honor to have a thumb, finger or two missing.
dar la vuelta--take the dallies.

+1 for what sempervirens said about never asking to see body parts on the internet again. Wow. Nothing to do now except hope for a speedy recovery.
