Darwin! Re your astute remarks:

So, the only probably way Stanford will not win the Pac12 north is if the Cougars beat Huskies. Where does that leave me?

During my years as an outdoor shop manager in Moscow Idaho,1973 - 83, I would often journey the seven miles to Pullman WA & WSU to watch PAC 10 football & Basketball games.

Around 1981, a friend & I managed seats just above the Stanford bench on the 40 yard line for a memorable football game that featured legendary Stanford quarterback John Elway.

We had a large metal thermos-bottle full of Margaritas that we enjoyed, while Stanford dominated the game & Elway strutted back & forth just below us, when he wasn't playing.

After we emptied the thermos, my friend kept urging me to throw the heavy bottle at Elway to knock him out, so WSU could win.

I thought about it, but calculated that I couldn't beat the outraged Stanford players up the stairs & out of the stadium.

Sigh.

There went my chance for fame.

That Stanford game was unbelievable. We were rolling and then a really dumb penalty kept us from a third TD and it was downhill from there. Some awful reffing added to the stoopid penalties we took but the bottom line was Stanford made adjustments and we didn’t. That was true of our other loss to AZ. It is clear to me that Peterson comes in with a game plan cast in stone. Jake Browning has also regressed this year. He never recovered from his arm injury last year. His arm is weak and he’s not very accurate under pressure. He’s making bad decisions too. I hope he’s not counting on an NFL career.

Our defense is over-rated from our weak schedule. That Stanford QB was schooling our corners and the linebackers seemed oblivious to their tight ends coming over the middle.

I will not be surprised at all if WSU wins the Apple Cup.

That's good for your sake that you didn't throw it (Fritz). We need you in ST and climbing, and it saved him so he could get beat by Cal on his last college game when the Sanford band decided to block for Cal. Boy did Elaway whine (literally) about that.

I'm not a huge Husky fan, but my main climbing partner here in Seattle went to Wazzu is one of the Husky hating Cougar fans. So, I often find myself trapped into a more pro Husky stance than is my inclination, just to balance things out.

I don't even want to think about a "behaving badly at sporting events thread".

Re: the fake field goal - a F1 team can change 4 tires faster than Jon Ryan could catch the hike and get to his feet.

And doesn’t Seattle have a minimum IQ for hiring? 9 penalties for over 100 yards and they were at home! Stoopid!

How bout them Broncos & Bulldogs, football fans!

That of course would be the Boise State Broncos & Fresno Bulldogs, who each won their division in the Mountain West Conference.

Now their rewards are a scheduled conference game in Fresno this weekend & the conference championship next weekend, likely in Boise, but maybe in Fresno again.

Back to back match-ups are an unusual thing in college football.

Boise State (9-2) vs. Fresno State (8-3) Game Preview
So here’s how this works.

It might seem silly, but there’s no way anyone could’ve foreseen Boise State and Fresno State playing for the Mountain West title when the schedule was put together. So this is the first of two meetings, with only next week’s battle mattering for conference supremacy.

Where will it be played? The team ranked higher in the College Football Playoff rankings will get the home field advantage. Boise State was 23rd in the latest edition, and it’ll stay there or be higher with a win, and Fresno State will likely crack the top 25 if it wins. But what if neither one is ranked? That probably won’t happen, but Fresno State would almost certainly end up in the CFP top 25. If it’s not, the Bulldogs would host on the head-to-head win.

On a roll, Boise State has won seven straight and is unbeaten in Mountain West play, while Fresno State dropped the date with UNLV, but has been terrific defensively all conference season.

The Bulldogs are 8-0 when allowing 21 points or fewer, and 0-3 when giving up more. The Broncos have scored more than 21 points in every game.

The Fresno State offensive line has been fantastic, and the defense has been a killer on third downs and leads the conference in total D.

But the Bulldogs don’t have the firepower.

Boise State has a defense, too, and it’ll rise up on the road in a low-scoring battle. The Broncos have more offense, with the running game taking over in the second half to win Round One.

Boise State vs. Fresno State Prediction

Final Score

Boise State 23, Fresno State 17

Thanks for that heads-up about Boise St/Fresno St, Fritz.

I have not seen a Bulldogs football game in recent years. In fact, my interest flagged after Jim Sweeney left the program and that's been quite a while (1996, in fact). I have seen some games since, but my Fresno fanship is not what it was. Sweeney has the best record of any FSU football coach, having 144 wins. His son, Kevin, became a pro QB.

In the early 90s his QB was Trent Dilfer, who won the Sammy Baugh award for collegiate passing in his junior year ('93), then went pro instead of finishing his 4 years at FSU.

I'll look forward to watching this conference championship contest.

Mouse! Thanks for mentioning coach Jim Sweeney. He had less success at Washington State U from 1968 - 75, but he did so much better at Fresno State. I do recall making the 7-mile drive from Moscow, ID to Pullman to watch "big-time" Pac 10 football games, when he coached at WSU. I've remained a WSU fan all these years.

Speaking of WSU, they have a great rivalry game with their hated cross-state rival Washington this Sat. If WSU wins, they are the PAC-12 North Champion.

ESPN did a report on the best Rivalry-Week Grudge-match football games this weekend. Washington vs Washington State (WSU) is # 4 on the list.

Current College Football Playoff ratings are WSU #13, Washington # 17.
But the pundits are giving Washington a 10 point margin over WSU. It should be a hellofa game.

Here’s ESPN trivia on it.

Washington State vs. Washington
Date: Saturday, 8 p.m. ET, Fox
First meeting: 1900
All-time series record: Washington, 71-32-6
Current winning streak: Washington, 4

Why it matters: Since 1900, Washington and Washington State have played on a near-annual basis in one of the most storied rivalries on the West Coast. Through rain and snow, the Huskies hold a 73-32-6 advantage, and even when the game is played at Washington State, it's at a stadium named after a Husky -- former Gov. Clarence D. Martin. The stakes have rarely been as high as they have been the past two seasons. After Washington beat Washington State in what amounted to a Pac-12 semifinal last year to remain in contention for the College Football Playoff, the Cougars can lock up the Pac-12 North with a win in Seattle on Saturday. -- Kyle Bonagura

Got a good college game shaping up. UCF ( 10-0 ) vs USF (9-1).. 14-7 1st quarter. The winner clinches a spot in the American Athletic Conference championship game against Memphis next week.

Edit: 21-20 2nd quarter

Hey, Fritz. It never dawned on me til you mentioned it that Sweeney had coached up north.

If only the nation would choose a president with the care that coaches are hired by educational institutions instead of relying on the political system...*sigh*

And if it was only as easy for "We the people" to rid ourselves of a "loser" president the same way universities rid themselves of losing coaches, that would be good too, at the present time.

Sigh.

WSU has some GUD wins this year. They beat both USC & Stanford.

The one that impressed me the most, was with Boise State. BSU was up by 21 points at the start of the 4th quarter. WSU was tied by the end of the game, then won after 3 overtimes.

BSU had to work hard to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in that game. That included a WSU punt hitting a BSU player in the back at the 20 yard line. WSU recovered the live ball & quickly scored.

That said, I'm not betting on WSU to win today's "hatefest" against "The Dawgs."

This year's national title race is turning out to be an ideal set up. Each of the top four teams will have to face a top 10 opponent in their respective conference championship. There's a good chance that any team winning an upset will secure a playoff spot. And don't overlook the fact that all the relevant conferences are included.
