Well i sure the hell am! since pre season began, i have been gearing up for week 1 and beyond..
My Raiders play the Titans today.. Hope Jason Campbell can make it happen this year..
Saints looked good this week- Farve looks 40, LT has something to prove this year..
My pick for the big game: Saints-Jets: Saints will win by 3 or more..

How sweet it was watching the UW Huskies quiet the Trojaneum Saturday!
I was pleasantly surprised that we were not accosted on the way out.
I guess the Trojan fans were resigned to their fate. I gotta say they
don't really make much noise there; the place is like a morgue compared to Husky Stadium.

It's amusing that Kurt has it as "My Raiders". A triumph of modern marketing, that some believe that very highly paid, mercenary, professional athletes, other commercial products, and even businesses, are "ours" or "my". We're currently undergoing a marketing campaign, telling us to support "our" Canucks. What a crock!

I am tangentially rooting for the SF Giants in the playoffs... but I'm not that into it... I don't like negativity so I won't watch the Yankees though I hope the Rays take the ALCS, who knows...
so I'm done with baseball (which made the really bad decision to extend the season into October) they are the boys of summer not the fellows of fall or the guys of spring, after all. Admittedly, if the BoSox had made it I'd be watching... but they didn't and I'm not.
So it is onto Football, American Football, which will be over soon enough...
...there's no accounting for taste.

Well if you think of football as vicarious warfare (which I think it is), wanting our team to pummel the other team into a pulp is perhaps better than looking for another jingoistic war.

Well, it's good to know that you and I agree on something controversial, Kurt. I still have fond memories of the Raiders teams circa 1970, when they played an exhibition game each year at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley. The interaction between the typical Raiders fan and the typical Berkeley freak (I was both at that time) was something to behold!
That intersection still exists. When Marshawn Lynch was in his last season at Cal, someone asked him to name his favorite NFL team. He responded that he was from Oakland, so he liked the Raiders. The reporter then asked if he'd ever sat in the Black Hole. Lynch replied, "Look, I said I like the Raiders. I didn't say I was insane."

Well! As long as we are talking college football:
How-bout them Boise State Broncos??
As a U. of Idaho grad, I used to hate Boise State football.

I'm darn proud of "them Broncos."

Yo Kurt,
Nice to know that you are a fellow Raiders fan . . . I'm probably about 10 years older than you and was fortunate to witness some of the classic Biletnikoff, Branch, Casper, Davis, Guy, Matuszak, Toomay, Shell, Sistrunk, Stabler, Tatum, Upshaw, Villapiano . . . et al. action. The Raiders are not fully appreciated and comprehended in the modern football era. They have been a formidable entity, spanning most of football history . . . much has been forgotten by the modern NFL fan. May the Raiders rise again!
Cheers to The Kid!

As a life long Patriots fan, I found myself not wanting either AFC team to win.
Since that didn't appear to be an option, I found myself wishing for the Jets as a whole to get crushed and humiliated, and for Ben Rothlisberger to get blocked hard into Rex Ryan, crushing Ryan's windpipe and causing Big Ben to need emergency emasculation surgery.
So, ummmm, Go Pack!

Fast forward 16 months and he is the starting Quarterback for a little upstart college program in the Olympic Peninsula. They lost their opener but hey they had lots of fun. The score looks like a high school basket ball game …………. He always was to big to climb :0)

Football? You mean gridiron
Football was last night, Celtic beating Barcelona, though I support both teams, Celtic since 1969 and Barca since 1982, when I was at the Camp Nou (Nou Camp to some) for the Itlay vs Poland semi-final in the World Cup.
But Celtic beating perhaps the best team in the world... priceless.
Okay, perhaps the Bhoys were a bit lucky against Barca, but luck counts. And Barcelona released a statement saying, Congratulations Celtic.
However, my late brother Mac was a diehard Raiders Fan (even after Al Davis took them south). I saw them in 1967 at the Oakland Coliseum (I think against the Broncos) as a paperboy, a group of us were taken there by the Oakland Tribune.
I like the Raiders, but somehow, I am still a 49ers fan.
Baseball is not my game, but... Go Giants. Mac was also a big A's fan. I like the A's, but they are my second team next to the SF Giants.
I like to see Barcelona beat everyone, except Celtic. Same with the Giants over the A's and the 49ers over the Raiders. Otherwise, go Raiders.
GO GLASGOW CELTIC, GO BHOYS.

WOW! Anyone catch the last 1/4 and overtime of the Washington/Washington State Game today?
It was an incredible comeback by the underdog.

Reilly: I am sorry for you and "the-dawgs".
I'm not even a WSU grad, but I lived 13 miles away in Moscow, Idaho from 1967-1983 and enjoyed going to games at WSU to watch "big-time" football and B-Ball.
I do appreciate how much each team wants to win these rival-games.
PS (I also remember the numerous times that Washington beat WSU in an upset in that final game and ruined WSU's chance of going to a bowl-game.)

The Pats were the last team to beat the Broncos, and I have a sneaking suspicion that they will meet again in the AFC Championship game. Manning looked pretty surgical today, but given his history with New England, I'm thinking he wants to see anyone but the Pats.

How about the face mask non-call in the Niners game? The ref threw the flag (it happened a few feet from him) and then picked it up! It would have been a travesty to call it a 5 yarder but to pick up the flag? Somebody needs to check that ref's financial situation.

The K-man's from Turlock High, y'know.
I think it's the same as having old Aaron as a homey if you're from Redding.
I was conflicted about maybe having the Broncs in the same Super Bowl as the Niners. I'm gald I don't have to go thru the same crap as years ago when that happened.
The Niners win! We just watched a total of eighteen hundred yards of offense between two games.

Your odds of a Harbaugh Bowl depend on the weather in Foxboro, which is supposed to not only be freezing cold, but crazy windy.
If the windy weather forces a ground game, Baltimore may have a chance to at least cover the spread.

This weekend always reminds me of the job I had printing t-shirts.
Our shop - like most others I'm sure - always printed up a huge run of Superbowl commerative t-shirts every year, which were sold wholesale to places like bars, car clubs, biker clubs, etc. You've seen the type.
This was - and probably still is - totally illegal. But I assume the statute of limitations as far as my participation goes has expired.
As soon as the first game finished, the artist had half his puzzle solved. While the second game was being played, he made up two different designs. One representing either outcome.
About halftime of the second game, we'd gather at the shirt shop and watch the second half on TV. As soon as the outcome was determined, it was START THE PRESSES!, and we'd go all night. We'd pull squeegees like madmen until dawn. Wages were paid in cash.
Right about NOW, there are t-shirt shops all over the country firing up their outlaw runs.

I was sitting in a bar a couple weeks ago, watching a soccer game on TV.
One player got the ball, and started running downfield. Nobody between him and the goal. Finally, I thought, we're going to actually see a score here.
THEN THE REFS BLEW THE PLAY DEAD!
It seems fast breaks are illegal in soccer. Screw that! You can keep it.

an interesting game to watch where all the foibles of the two teams were on display... I'm glad that the Patriots "had the ball bounce their way"
the impressive fact was that they didn't succumb to the loss which everyone (including me) thought inevitable at the half... that shows incredible discipline for all elements of the game, offense, defense and special teams, during a game where the smallest of lapses at any of those aspects would be magnified. the patriots' last punt was an example of playing every minute of the game, at that point it was incredible that they might tie it... certainly winning was a distant thought.
the 7 turnovers was also amazing, and once again the patriots somehow came out of the game with +1, after giving up 3 in the first quarter. the elements played a major role.
my daughter texted me, also, but I wasn't watching my phone... which was good because I wouldn't have been as positive as Edge... bad patriot football for the first half against the best AFC team of 2013... and they should have lost. that they didn't made for a great second half (whatever the outcome).

I don't foresee Ridley and his manos de piedra playing much more for Belichick.

Well I'm thinking my Broncos will need at least 45 points to win tonight. Chargers do not suck on Offense.
Wouldn't be surprised to see 100pts of total offense tonight.
Any takers?
Our pass defense is crap. So is the Chargers.
It's been a good year but I fear a sad Playoffs with a defense that gives away 26 points a game.

first post on this thread. i'm about 45 miles from Auburn; but live on the GA side of the Chattahoochee River.
i have 4 GA graduates in my family who insist i should be a loyal GA fan; but my father was cardiologist consultant for the Tigers in the 60's, 70's and early 80's, so we all grew up Tiger fans. i spent a lot of time in (and under) wooden bleachers that used to be at the west end zone. As we got a little older we got to sit in prime seats on the 50 yd line; my oldest brother got to stand on the sideline with my dad.
i am slow to accept change and stick to my roots. i am not really a big "ra-ra", but i enjoy college football.
i went to FSU for graduate school for exercise physiology, so i favor them as long as far as the ACC goes; but i will have to pull for the Tigers in the championship game.
i imagine that game will live up to it's hype as both are deep in talent, both players and coaches.
Unless the hype goes to far and Auburn has a bad outing and seeing that no team can figure out Malzahn's offense, i believe the Tigers will come out on top after each team puts a lot of points on the board. if it comes down to the need of a last minute miracle for the Tigers to win, i can't imagine them having as much fortune as they have had the last two games; but what do i know?
and for the record, i don't pay any attention to the other professional football league as they are overly paid and with egos matching income. i just can't get into it.
that's my 2¢ worth.

Is this a classic trap game for the Broncos?
Schaub has been adequate in the past and back with a chip on his shoulder, and the Texans have something to prove as a team; Denver is piling up key injuries and a few teams have exposed methods for containing them.
Chiefs are down big to the Colts.

My team is out as usual, but I'd love to see Niners get by Carolina. If they can, I think they win against Seattle. Just like they did in there last meeting. Just like the Cardinals did (in Seattle) as well.
Seattle are favorites but I bet they blow it. Not a Pete Carroll fan at all so I certainly hope they do. Don't forget, Seahawks have to win as well next week as well. Iv'e got a feeling Brees and Co. won't lay down and die like they did in there last meeting.

Their difficulties in that regard were none of their own doing. That's tough for a kid. Real important that they be loved and nurtured by their adopted family. And props to those people who take on the special task of adopting kids. My deepest respects.

So, Nature, what ultimate match-up are you projecting?
I don't see NO going into Sea this week and winning.
I know SD beat the Broncos but given the weather and the playoffs I don't see that happening again. Though Manning does know how to choke in the playoffs.
Carolina has been playing really well and has an excellent defense. They beat SF at home and given the marginal victories of SF I don't see them getting out of there.
The Indy/Pats game is intriguing. Hard to see the Pats losing but after that comeback I'm going with Indy.
So:
Car VS Sea
Indy VS Denver
Seattle is a tough place to play and with an inconsistent Carolina defense I give the nod to Seattle.
if it does end up indy/den that would be a really awesome matchup and story. In the end Denver would probably win with that high powered offense. But I think Indy has a chance.
So Seattle/Denver SB - the best defense against a high powered passing game. And a good offense that could have a real weapon back in Harvin VS an OK defense. High scoring SB - Sea 42, Denver 3 (kidding: Denver 35)

I don't see the Pats beating the Colts this time around...in spite of Brady having a hot hand. His favorite receiver is out for the season with a torn ACL. And Luck...is lucky! Indy over NE.
Denver is peaking again, and Manning is on a hot streak. So...Broncos over SD.
Colts vs. Broncos; Manning at home will really be gunning for lots of points early as well as his usual 4th quarter heroics. Revenge is probably another factor. Broncos over Indy 49-35.
In the NFC this weekend, I see Carolina over SF and Seachickens over the Aints.
Carolina has a way of dealing out upsets, so I'll go out on a shaky limb and say Carolina over Seattle in the DC.
SB: Denver over Carolina by 2 TDs.

No doubt it's a nice advantage to play at home, but GB is historically as tough as anywhere to play a post-season road game.

But seriously.... a Dome team playing in the rain in the PNW. Granted it won't be as cold as phily. But that's an issue for their passing game. And last time out the 'hawks gave up almost nothing on the ground. 27-17 hawks.

Sketch,
First, it is commonly accepted that there is a huge bias towards eastern
and southern teams amongst pollsters.
Second, look at FSU's schedule:
Nevada? Ooooh! Bethune-Cookman? I thought that was a lower GI disorder?
Maryland How does a Terrapin hold a football?
NC State? Who knew the ball was oblong?
Wake Forest? No comment
Idaho? Sorry, Fritz, out of respect, again no comment.
Duke? Again, someone substituted the wrong kind of ball.
What, The Sisters of Mercy weren't available in 2013?
Third, they play Crackerball down there because the admissions departments'
primary criteria are 40 yd times, vertical leap, and BMI. There are more
Nobel laureates at UCLA and USC than all the schools east of the Mississippi
and south of the Mason-Dixon Line and we won't even start to include Cal's,
Stanford's, or UW's. Why do you think Pac-10/12 QB's are so disproportionately
represented in the NFL? Because they have the brains to go to good schools
that play pro-style offenses. Yes, the SEC puts out good linemen and runners
but name me one good pro QB and I'll name you 5 from the Pac-12 or Greater West (BYU).

I'm glad this is Dierdorf's last game behind a microphone.
Hearing him go on talking about the safety on the blown punt was about all I could take. Once the ball went over the punter's head, the best of all the likely outcomes was a safety. Colts were going to score at least 3 points off of that, and potentially as many as 8. But instead they were limited to 2! Whether through brilliance or luck, Patriots made the best of it.
He didn't play back before they had to wear helmets, did he? I know Aikman had his bell rung a few too many times, which accounts for the idiotic spew we hear out of him every Sunday. But I don't know what Dierdorf's handicap is.

Well, here's hopin' for Denver... but there's just too much that has to go right. And, Manning does have a unique ability to clutch in the playoffs. This is made all the worse (assuming we can even get past SD) by his record against Brady. So, I'm forced to predict (against my hopes) that either SD or the Pats turn a season for the ages into a pitifully-sputtering early end (or, right on time, depending upon your view of the Broncos).
(Hopefully, by saying this, I'm anti-jinxing. lol)

The Pats have one big strike against them: this game isn't in Foxboro, where they have a real home field, jinx-the-opponent advantage. Manning didn't clutch in Foxboro, the ball took a crazy bounce and hit a blocker during a punt return.
That said, the Donkeys need to attend to business today and take care of SD first!

I like the Niners by a field goal because they have an actual running back.
The Chargers' D has played much better towards the end of the season and I

I also give the Chargers' running game the edge.

I always liked Welker, especially when the Pats took him from Miami and turned him into the most prolific pass catcher in the game. I'm curious to see how he holds up, since he makes his bread and butter over the middle and doesn't even need to be targeted to get hit.
Should be a great game, but I'll be watching more out of curiosity as to who the Patriots will be facing next week, and where. Whoever it is will have their hands full game planning against the ground attack, knowing Brady can easily take the game airborne as he has done so many times before.

Sad to say, but I didn't see anything in this "win" to make me disagree with you. Denver has an astounding capacity to get in its own way at critical times. Stupid penalties, dropped passes (MANY!), and a defense that can always figure out a way to capitulate.
That said, the final drive was a series of important conversions.
But, it's quite frustrating to see the defense show (only) glimmers of a good defensive team. The Pats are not going to make them look good.
What I saw today tells me that it's a virtual miracle if Denver ends up in the Superbowl.

Brady v Manning
If Manning wants to make the best statement he could.. this is his opportunity.
Bummer the Broncs can't defend at 20 yds for their lives though. Fortunately SD didn' figure that out months ago like the rest of us.
Thank god we didnt face the Colts today.
NE will score 30 pts.. the question will be Manning.

True. But I wish it was more about Manning. Bottom line is that it's the whole team, and the defense has been really poor all season. Unless the defense can get in on Brady and really shut down that offense, I don't see the Bronco offense putting up enough points to offset the inevitable Pats scores, Bronco penalties, coupled with the likes of Holliday stupid moves (he's not a net gain this season), and so forth. The Pats just play a tighter game.

Denver did the same this week.
And NE did the same the week before. You don't see them whining about it this week.
I guess the only reason the 'niner fans are whining about it is because they didn't get a chance to play at home and do the same thing.
And they didn't (any of the teams) ban anyone. They, within NFL rules, are allowed to stipulate where they sell their tickets.
This is SOP - nothing to see here.

Pete and I are both nervous because
A. Those Italian refs might show up
B. The Hawks take too many penalties
C. Sh!t happens
The Hawks' secondary are gonna school the K-bird but Harbaugh knows that and
will give him plenty of short check-offs. The ground games are about equal
although Lynch has more mass and better wheels. However, Gore does get the
job done from within. Seattle has a better return man, if they don't get
caught blocking in the back. Pete is a better coach but he has me a little
baffled. Has he been purposely holding Wilson back so he doesn't beat himself
or has Wilson become more afraid of losing than he is desirous of winning?
Their play calling was way too conservative in the second half last week
although their D pulled 'em through. It should be a legit slugfest IF the
Zebras let 'em play a little.

I thinks its gonna be a great game but I can't shake the feeling that we are about to see just how quiet 69,000 fans at Century Stadium can be.
Hope so...

Reilly - I think it was less about holding them back and more about this.
they built a nice halftime lead though not on the greatest offense performance.
in the third quarter they had the nasty wind in their face so they turned to Beast Mode. By the fourth quarter they still had the 16-0 lead so there was little reason to go away from the ground game.
They took their shots in the first half and i expect the same this game.

Gotta love the chances of smack talk happening in the week leading up to the Divisionals.
100% chance of no gain, some pain, some guy talks about roagaine and seattle pain.
The Niners are so hot they're gonna be meltin' the snow right off Rainier, the place is gonna flood, and then we'll see who's winning & who's whining, YO!

Reilly,
I lived in the Bay Area for while.
I used to be a Rams fan. Then I watched Jim "Chrissy" Everett hook slide 3 yards short of a first down with the playoffs on the line.
Next I watched Steve Young put his head down and go hard to get the first down with the game on the line.
Been a 9ers fan ever since.
Of course I root for the Chargers.

I thought football was over for the year a month and a half ago when the Saskatchewan Roughriders won the Grey Cup, but Mimi tells me there's some kind of football league down here in the US and that they're still playing even though it's January. Weird.
I doubt they play at a very high level, but I'm going to go over and watch it with her and Steve this afternoon.

An English friend once told me -- absolutely seriously -- that if you had to pick one sport that generated the overall best athletes, athletes that would excel at any sport they turned to, it would be cricket.
He wasn't joking.
I didn't know what to say.

That's what I thought. I could understand if he didn't know much about what it took to play NFL football, but surely he knew about rugby and soccer.
And I'll admit I haven't seen hundreds of cricket matches, and I'm sure that the top level cricketers are serious athletes, but...
Edit to add: He may not have been on shrooms, but he was climbing in the middle of winter in Scotland, with me, so he probably was pretty crazy.

WBC Championship, Caesar's Palace, June 1982. There had not been a white world heavyweight champion in 22 years, and Cooney would try to change that. Cooney was cast as "The Great White Hope" in one of the most anticipated fights of the early 1980s.
Holmes: 39-0. Cooney: 25-0.
My point:
Seahawks never have done it. Niners have. This will be a tough game for both teams. I'm looking forward to it.
Seahawks lose in OT.
My God, man! Cricket?

Don't know much about cricket, but assuming it's basically the same as baseball from an athletic standpoint, I can believe it.
The NFL players (in some positions) look more like the guy on the cover of a glossy fitness magazine, but the hand eye coordination and speed necessary to hit at the major league level is on a different realm.

The Hawks don't seem to be able to fly.
And SF has now clearly demonstrated that they CAN move the ball against the Hawks' defense, even with the 12th man on the field.

I don't like the Hawks' play calling. They don't employ Kearse enough on
the quick look-in. Truth be told the O line ain't gettin' it done.
Only giving up the field goal after the big pass was a big pump up for the Niners' D.
