I received verification via e-mail that Big Rock will be closed to climbing for an earthquake retrofit of the dam.

Thank you for your interest in the Perris Dam Remediation Project. The climbing area (A.K.A Big Rock?) is currently open. I anticipate that the area will be closed shortly before construction begins on the dam. There is no hard start date for construction, but work is generally scheduled to begin mid-2011 and the closure of the rock climbing area is anticipated to last for up to three years.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me or the Perris Dam reflector. Thank you again for your interest in the Perris Dam Remediation Project.

How is this to be enforced?

No info on enforcement. However, the place will be crawling with construction workers and supervisors. Plus the numerous park ranger patrols who can drive right up to the base of the rock. Violators would be "sitting ducks" for a ticket or arrest.

Update on the pending closure:
Currently, DWR anticipates the Final EIR to be certified by summer, 2011. Following EIR certification, we anticipate completion of the dam remediation design in summer, 2012, and construction to begin in mid 2013. Completion of the dam remediation is expected before the end of 2015. All projects concerning Perris Dam are anticipated to be complete by 2016.

We are trying to keep our web-site (http://www.water.ca.gov/lakeperris/); updated with the most current schedule available.

Again, thank you for your interest in the Perris Dam Remediation Project.

This follow up e-mail added clarification:
Big Rock would likely remain open up until a few months prior to start of construction.

No doubt they have a new crew of rangers, but bitd they were really unreasonable. Unless the culture has changed, be happy if all they do is issue a ticket.

then pay for the ticket you just got...

The place is not worth getting a citation over. Fun, if you're in the area. Other and much better places to climb.....

Update on the status of climbing here? Have they closed it yet for the dam work? Is there a good guidebook for the place? Going to be near there in April and thought we might check it out if it wasn't closed yet.

Hey!

I am going to be in SoCal tomorrow randomly working at a job site about 5 miles from Lake Perris. Does anyone know if that info is still fresh? Can I get in for a couple of quick laps on my way back to the airport or does construction have it shut down? I was unable to reach the park office.

No sign of construction starting earlier this year.

Good chance it's still open.

yeah, I know....it is an emotional pull, not a rational one.

kind of like driving by a house you used to live in as a kid even though other people are living there now.

Should be okay if you get there real early. If gate is closed you can walk in about 20 minutes. Or park on the dam side and walk in. Gonna cook hot by 11:00 I'd guess.
