in 2007 the fish froze to the cutting board. That was over Thanksgiving weekend - November.

in 2009 the fish froze to the cutting board. That was over halloween weekend - October.

So we're going to try this in late September. Yeah, we'll probably be able to sear the fish on the cutting board.... grrrrreeeeat.

Saturday September 25th is National Public Lands Day:
http://www.publiclandsday.org/

Jim Donini is organizing a volunteer event with BLM for the Indian Creek area. Contact him for details on that.

Me? I'm slicing fish for the slaves.

Here's the info:

Indian Creek SushiFest, September 25th, 2010.

Please nature for additional information of with questions.

Sushi will be prepared and served starting around 6PM that evening. Food will be served until people stop eating (All you can eat). A $30/person Food donation is requested.

Nature is not professionally retained for this event. He is volunteering his time. The $30 per person goes into the pool that allows him to order fish from places with warm beaches and big boats that bring in the fish. This is a not for profit event.

For this event we can expect to have fish flown in (FedEx) from Honolulu and San Diego. The fish from Honolulu will (probably) consist of large fillets of Big Eye tuna (Maguro), Tajiki (Blue Marlin), Tasmanian Salmon (butter from the sea), and Albacore or Yellowtail - all fresh. From San Diego expect fresh Uni (the best nature has ever tasted), Sweet Shrimp, Unagi, Tobiko, and a few other delicious items.

Appetizers will be served: Miso soup, Edamame, Seaweed Salad, Cucumber Salad.

There is a vegetarian/vegan option - please contact Nature/Doug for details.

Most of the veggies, the rice and other food items are organic.

Have something that you really love that isn’t in the above list? Let nature know!

Coffee and french toast will be served in the morning.

You can volunteer for a portion, or all of your food donation. Help is needed in preparing food, serving food, and rolling sushi. If you are sushi chef and willing to help out please let nature know.

Dishes - please be prepared to help do some dishes in the morning. We generate a bunch of them in one night. Also, a little help setting up and tearing down is appreciated.

Food donations are requested in advance. Please contact nature for an address if you wish to pay by check. For Paypal - paypal _(at)_lafarge.net. If you are not sure if you will attend contact nature and let him know. He’ll hold a few spots but please be sure to provide a few details as to why you are sitting the fence.

A limit of 50 might be placed on this event. It’ll depend on the interest as well as how much help nature can get at the sushi bar (he can’t do more than 30 by himself so he’ll need help).

There is a very good chance a second night of sushi will be offered on Sunday the 26th. No prepayment is required for this, however, if you are very interested in a second night please notify nature.

If you’ve never heard of SushiFest and would like to learn more log onto supertopo.com and search around for the various threads. To date there have been 14 formal SushiFest events.

Hey Nature,

I believe this date conflicts with the Yozemite facelift eh? Just a thought... We're planning to head to the lift, but if you moved this to October, we'd likely be IN!

Might be one in October as well.

I fully recognize it's during the Facelift.

Again, the 25th is National Public Lands Day - I think that's what inspired Ken to start the facelift. Jim worked with BLM last year on that day and is doing the same this year.

Yeah, this isn't at all meant to compete with the facelift. I'm hoping that maybe next year I can get back to the facelift with sushi.

All around the nation people are volunteering to help our Public Lands.

Maybe some techno-geeks(the computer kind, not music kind) can figure out a way to do a satelite link-up between Facelift and IC SF...

Or else....maybe if we yell REAL LOUD.

Better idea - we make a plan to have a minute of "communal energy" on the 25th...maybe at 9pm? We FL'ers can send thought forms of fish tacos(or whatever we are having) to IC and you SushiMen can send us some though-hand rolls. mmmmm, I can taste them already!(Don't you be sneaking Uni into those thought rolls though!!!!)

If that is a question for me Prod I don't know whats up. In the last 6-8 months I have lost around 50 pounds. I'm six feet tall and I normally now weigh 120 or less.

I've done lots of intractible vomiting, couple so serious I wound up in the hospital for a week. The docs can't dope it out, now they want to CT scan my head in case it's a brain tumor.

I'm about ready for it all to be over, one way or another. Hopefully I could pound out a little IC action. I don't really know that many other Supertopers but it would be fun to see a couple of folks I know anyway.

I'll keep struggling, but right now I think I'll struggle off to bed.

yeah, bread and water... and raw fish (probably tastes the same to fatty).

a lurker her on the taco has made a very nice offer for sushi. Wow!

4+ weeks away. 6 paid and counting. Two more with checks in the mail. Oh and Brick who's on the perma-paid list.

I wrote this on the thread Ghost started:

-------

I walked up to the sushibar and inspected his fish. He looked at me and ask do you have any questions. I said 'no'. and then I said, "yeah, the maguro - it's yellow fin?". It was without a doubt the nicest piece of yellowfin I've ever seen.

Mimi - gimme some credit ;-)
at my sushi bar you will also only find fish that comes from sustainable resources. You will not find Bluefin at my sushibar, you will not find it at Hajime's sushi bar.

I'd very much love to return and sit in front of him. I'd be nervous for a while. I have endless respect for a man such as Hajime. He has skills I can only dream of. He'd never take me as an apprentice. Though I'm sure on some level he'd approve of my approach he also wouldn't "get" it.

I mean.... by the time I die I hope to serve sushi in more remote and obscure places than anyone ever has. He/They (The Japanese) just don't dream that way.

I mean my god... who in their right mind would slice fish when it's 15F outside? Nobody in attendance even offered to take their thick gloves off to help me ;-)

Sushi Anytime and Anywhere.

Steve: well talk about doing it in Cochise.

oh, and a sick plan for rocking a penthouse suite in Vegas has been tabled.

I'm not going to do anything Saturday before sushi in the creek other than prepare food for you folks. I learned a lot that night about serving sushi. I was also reminded about things I was already aware of. A new approach and more inspired dedication to creating food that at least shows I've been inspired by a master.

humbly,
~nature

Edit: Mari/David - if you could help me remember as much as you can, in order, of all the dishes we had I'd appreciate it. the sauces are what I'm trying to recall most.

I have a hard time making concrete plans on physical activity but I am really excited about this. I would really like to climb Six Shooter if I can get anyone else into it. If nothing else I will help at the camp chores.

Not too late - just getting close.

and yeah, saturday night for sushi, sunday morning french toast and coffee included as well...

Sunday night will be by donation - if it happens at all as I'm not sure what kind of extras I'll have. I suppose I'll have extra rice, veggies, and some assortment of fish.

I'm in a tough spot - not enough paid to commit to having extra but am close to that point.

cuz that's how we roll

Edit: I suppose if you want to commit to full sushi on sunday night we can make that happen. One thing that is nice is the fewer people we have around the sushi bar the more attention I can give to you and the food. And I plan to give more attention than ever before to my food.

I need ideas for more sauces.

Paul, yeah... that was hard work. It killed me to learn the night before I left that the only help I was to get behind the sushi bar bailed.

I think most folks went away stuffed but I fear Moose and his friend didn't which kinda bums me out. If my count is correct we had a total of 40 folks. I barely covered costs but managed to which is nice. But beyond 25 people I need help.

and to Beth: you are my hero. She did almost all of the dishes after the first night with barely any help. That kind of effort won't be forgotten.
