Jim Bridwell's account of this ultraclassic Alaskan adventure from Climbing November-December 1981. Several STers have asked for this one!

Thanks Steve,
I've spent about 60 days on that glacier, trying to get up some of the undone lines. I can appreciate all the attempts it took for the east face to happen. Jim got me psyched on going there. That article is a pretty nice piece of history. Crossing those snowy slabs up there is mind bending sh#t.

It is mind-blowing to think of going up and down that with no bolt kit. Even if they planned to rap down on slung horns- how many treeless lines even in Yosemite would you look at and think "yeah slings over horns will get us down." How many slings would they need to not run out of gear?

Pretty un-F-ing believable.

Arguably the most gripping alpine adventure ever written, and perhaps my all-time favourite. I read it aloud whilst cowering beneath a thick warm blanket.

Much thanks to our Librarian Steve for posting this.

Man, I MISS my buddy! Still have dreams of him, wish I could still dial him up and hear his voice again. Have some of his ashes and a beat up rurp I sit in my passenger seat when I go to the mountains just to make sure he has his old seat!
