Sunday ( 6-27 ) was the fiftieth anniversary of Plaza Monumental in Tijuana, and they had a hell of a party to celebrate it!

http://www.bullfightingnews.com/modules/news/article.php?storyid=133

I knew it was a big deal on Friday, when I heard Charo on the radio telling people not to attend. She doesn't like the bullfights. I don't even think she's Mexican.

I got these pictures from Border Field State Park, at the extreme s/w edge of California. Right on the coast, where the waves hit the wire. I used a kite to fly the camera.

The fence the cars are parked against is the actual border. The extra fences are all on U.S. soil. Funny how the Federal Government thinks they need four or five fences right here, while they let other border stretches go un-fenced.

When I brought the kite down I noticed what looks like a small calibre bullet hole in it - right dead center! When I was here in September, the Border Patrol advised me someone in Mexico may shoot at my kite if they can tell I'm taking aerial pictures. Maybe he was right.

I'll bet there are some great Surf-and-Turf deals at these seafood joints, seeing as they're sandwiched between the Bullring and the Pacific Ocean:

Neighborhood north of the Bullring, right on the border:

This helicopter circled above my kite until I guess he satisfied his concerns for National Security, or else he just got bored. Or dizzy. As long as I keep the kite under 500' I should be good.

This is about what that pilot would have seen:

(follow the kite string down, I'm at the end of it)

Un-documented workers aren't all that comes across the border from Mexico, when it rains, raw sewage flows north down the Tijuana River and floods the road in:

Maybe that's why you're not supposed to flush your toilet paper in Mexico. They don't want to see a bunch of paper lying around when the sewage floods the streets. Thinking ahead, they are!

I was advised of the sewage content by a Government Biologist who was there studying the Least Terns. He caught me about a hundred yards from the flooded part and gave me a ride back to where I should have picked up the trail down to the beach.

He said to keep a eye open for his Terns, as they are teaching the chicks to fly. Sure enough, that's what I saw them doing. If he hadn't tipped me off, I never would have noticed ( and I would probably have waded right into the sewage too ).

That's a hell of a place for a walrus to take a nap:

Except for that guy ( the dead seal ), I had the entire beach all to myself, for at least a couple miles north. "Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Huntington any more".

This was the first time I flew the camera on a kite I've had for at least six months. I would have liked to have tested it somewhere else sometime earlier. It's for very light winds only, and the winds where I live just don't work for it, so it was relegated to the Accelerated Testing Program.

I like the Black Bat motif, but I didn't realize how serious it may look flying over a place like an international border until I checked out this pic. No wonder someone wanted to take a shot at it!

Nice pics. I bet your little test flight had some concerned viewing on both sides of the border.

Thanks!

If you like mine, you'll love these:

http://www.flickr.com/groups/kiteaerialphotography/pool/

This is a pool of aerial pictures taken all over the world, every one of them from a flying kite. Some are better than others, but the good ones are really good. Check out the Eiffel Tower shots.

Mr Milktoast, that's the first I've seen of that balloon project, but I'd bet anything these guys ( http://ostro.ced.berkeley.edu/~crisr/discuss/ ) are all over it. Some of them fool around with rc helicopters and balloons.

Keep 'em coming, Chaz! How big is The Bat - about 15 sq ft?

ps Bullfighting clearly isn't what it used to be what with the
growth of cockfighting.

Chaz,

Cool Pics. I drive by there 2 or 3 times a month when I go surfing. This is at Playas de Tijuana, yes?

Side Note: Since all the sh#t hit the fan (economy, required passport, heads getting lopped off by narco-traffickers), the tourist trade is WAY off. 2 weeks ago, I had a somwhat famous surfspot all to myself for about 3 hours before a couple of other guys paddled out. This was on a Saturday.

New rules at Friendship Circle:

( interesting that there's no Spanish translation on this sign )

( Friendship Circle is the circular concrete pad sitting astride the border, the sign is beside the gate on the new, fortified fence )

Up until last year, people on both sides of the border would meet or just hang out here. Years ago, I bought tacos from a guy on the other side.

Last time I was there, in October, there was no access to the actual border here. Now, they seem to have softened things up a bit.

THIS ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/30901290@N03/4030499699/ ) is what it looked like then.
