Hey gang, been into BG from early HS. Still hack away on my guitars + mando.
Was wondering if any of you 'ol dogs went to this...http://stompin76.com/
I was there with my good buddy Bill. I was living in Connecticut at the time and saw the ad in the newspaper so we went and talked his dad into letting us paint part of the house (sure didn't want to do the whole thing) so we could earn enough $$ to go.
I knew my mom + dad at the time wouldn't let me go, so instead of asking, I just left a note on the kitchen table when she was out, packed my bag and headed over to Bill's. Glad my daughters never pulled that trick.
We'd decided to hitch down there as neither one of us had a car at the time.
It was in held Galax Va. where they use to hold the old fiddler's convention
Long story short, we had an amazing adventure. 1 week of complete free range teenagers. 'shine, cid, Jack, and just good 'ol pickin for days on end...
One of those images that still hangs is seeing Doc. get out of the heli and ducking as the rotor wash blew him around a bit(the backroad was so packed only emergency vehicles could get in and even that was luck, so they flew the performers in by heli).
Great times.
Anyone else get to go?

Last month in Culver City I saw Tony Furtado with Luke Price and 2 guys from the Bonedaddy's on bass and drums.

So I was at the Leap on Friday, and while roping up for a dusk climb of Sinbad-Herbert I was talking to some nice climbers who happened to also be bluegrass musicians. They, like me, had decided to skip the Grass Valley Festival for a weekend of climbing.
Anyway, I had so much fun on the route that I wanted to bust out the banjo the minute I came down, but alas my banjo and my new friends were both far away. Yet I was left with an idea...
Any other mando, fiddle, or flatpicking guitar players climbing in the Sierras? If so, well you know what to do...
This was Bertrand's OP, and I'm still loving the idea of a BG jam with fellow climbers. At least in the Pacific Northwest, and if it were more than just one day of jamming/climbing/whatever, I'd be inclined to travel farther for it. Of course, this also begs the question of whether I might be able to put something together, too. I'll give this some serious thought. Anyone up this way feel like brainstorming with me?

Tom,
I’m finished work down south mid September and expect to be closer to home from mid October on.
A rendezvous in the PNW would have my interest.
Something along the lines of Leavenworth or Smith in late October for cragging, picking and maybe even some fly fishing would be compelling.

That could be amazing! Keep me posted, or maybe we can just keep in touch about it. My fall schedule is often pretty crazy, but I'd do my level best to make some kind of rendezvouz like that (fly-fishing included).

I was at a jam tonight in Georgetown (part of greater Seattle), and an artist was sitting at a table quietly drawing various players. Here's the one he did of me, which he did while I wasn't looking:

Jerry Douglas is downright incredible. He's the only dobro player my wife can stand to listen to, which is saying something!
Another amazing dobro player is young Michael Kilby from Squamish (a friend of Chief's). The guy is amazing!

Wow, how haven't I seen this thread before?! Great stuff!!
We were just out visiting some family and hit up the Boats and Bluegrass festival in Winona MN. Awesome fest, I highly recommend it. Listening to bluegrass bands while floating around in canoes on the Mississippi River sure seems like the best way to do it, and lots of great jams all around. Some really amazing twang talent coming from that region of the country for sure
Pert Near was one of my favorites. How can you not dig a band with a clogger?

I went to the Maltby Jam here in the Seattle area, and lo and behold, Perry Beckham ("Chief") showed up all the way from Squamish. Great to see him again!
Man...does he have a sweet 30's vintage Martin guitar--nearly pristine. Hard to believe anything nearly 80 years old could look like that (at least I know I won't!).
