Punk guitarists with sounds unique enough that they can easily be picked from an audio line up. Makes them "good" imo.

This holds true, and I don't know if I've ever seen it in punk rock

You might find some in the punk that came out of the 3rd wave of ska...

My older brother learned the classic 70's rock when he was 15 or so yet played in a Punk band when he was 20 because that movement related to him aside from the pure guitarists perspective.

He grew older and his guitar playing mirrored his interest and continued to evolve. He payed classic guitar and Gypsies Kings flawlessly for a time. He now plays mostly blues, lots of slide in open tuning on a steel National- Robert Johnson and such.

My 23 year old son has followed much of the same path in his progression. My brother hosted us to The Crossroads Blues Festival at Madison Square Garden a couple of years ago knowing this may influence my sons guitar playing and advance him straight to the good stuff. It worked...

Sure, early punk guitarists probably weren't versed in music theory, but there have been many punk bands with great guitarists. Most honor the style of music and don't f*#k it up with too much virtuoso.

Frank Navetta and Stephen Egerton with Descendents/All

John Reis - Rocket From the Crypt/Pitchfork/Drive Like Jehu

Dr. Know - Bad Brains

Brett Gurewitz - Bad Religion

El Hefe - NOFX

I think this is the thread where I realize Warbler isn't just banninated but flat out erased, his classic rock blah blah blah is just gone. Hah.

Splitclimber's mention of John Reis reminded me that I've had a bit of a thing for Hot Snakes lately, this song has been in heavy rotation:

A Cramps show in Kansas Ciry 27+ years ago is still vivid in my memory. Electric, wild, and just a little feeling of danger. It was quite a show! The band was tight & full of energy, and Lux was in immaculate form. His skin was so pale & white I remember thinking “damn vampires really exist”. RIP to a true wild man!
